Big Ben Can Bong For Brexit

I see in my Sunday paper that the new Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, has said he would allow Big Ben to ring out to mark Brexit on January 31st, ‘If MP’s wish to do that’.
How refreshing that this Speaker seems keen to do his job impartially, so unlike the bombastic Bercow, who did everything in his power to force his own views about Brexit at every turn.

jura what makes you think you have the right to interfere with the decisions made by the government of an country different to the one you live in - that is why the majority voted to leave the EU because we are tired of people living in another country thinking they have that right.

EITHER we live in a democracy, or we don't. Personally, I believe the latter.

BUT if you believe we ARE a democracy, which all the Leavers seem to feel we are, then a protest fits in very well with that theory. If we're democratic, then freedom of speech and freedom of protest are allowed.

I suspect those that are happy about Brexit want it BOTH ways. They want the Brexit vote respected but want to deny those who want to protest that right too.

BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR. Restricting right to protest is very far-right. It's how it started under the Nazis.

WadesNan, I am British and have the right to vote and so is my OH- we have given our life to work for this country- the fact we are not currently there (well actually we are right now) is irrelevant. We belong to the great majority who did NOT vote for Conservatives.

From a friend today ''"Bercow was too partisan and that we needed a more neutral Speaker.... by right-wing liars.''

oh yes. And for goodness sake, will you desist with this 'left' mallarkie (sp???) - remainers do not reperesent 'the left'.

Ringing the bells of Big Ben- as to celebrate the end of a war which saved the country is nothing else than gloating by a minority- in a very divided country which is not going to heal for a very long time, if ever.

As for those calling for ' demos' and talk of some sort of rebellion that is by far worse than ringing the bells of Big Ben as a proposal, not even on the same scale.

That is all that is left I suppose for those who cannot accept what has happened politically.

It is a queer on this. The above link raises the question who has the 'say'.

I would prefer not to see nor hear any activities that could be deemed as some sort of jubilation or bombast, merely my opinion obviously and I accept others have theirs.

I think it is a time to remain dignified and respectful of the fact there is a hell of a lot of hard work and negotiations that require a little sensitivity and pragmatism for the right outcome to benefit both the UK and the European Union.

jura2 Sun 22-Dec-19 16:51:24

Well, I think a big demo to make it plain that this is the case, is in order ...

Labaik Sun 22-Dec-19 16:48:39

I was just thinking that, jura. 50% of the people and 3/5 countries will not be celebrating and will just have their noses rubbed in it. Added to which it will be broadcast throughout the world and everyone will think this is what we all want #notinmyname

jura2 Sun 22-Dec-19 16:44:52

With the country so divided, this will not help with that 'healing' process- a gloating red rag, for sure- and will cause trouble, for sure.

Firecracker123 Sun 22-Dec-19 15:53:45

Because it's a signal that we are finally leaving the EU, although if you voted to remain you will probably be crying ? lol.

inkcog Sun 22-Dec-19 14:52:57

How weird, how very weird. Why on earth are people getting excited about this?

BlueBelle Sun 22-Dec-19 14:47:40

Im so happy to live in a democracy ?? oh dear oh dear oh dear I don’t feel we live in a democracy any more I don’t recognise this country any more the result has been achieved through lies lies and more lies and the country is every bit as divided as three years ago
How can we have freedom of choice when half the population not to mention half the four countries within the UK have been pulled along kicking and screaming with the ‘majority’
A poster on here the other day said they voted for Brexit not knowing that the money we paid in came back in the form of grants etc and she went on to say most of her friends were the same ?
I personally will NEVER be happy about turning our back on the rest of our cousins in Europe and for what ? it’s absolutely nothing to rejoice about and rubbing people’s noses in it by chiming out will only cause more bad feeling
jennifereccles what was bad being part of the EU? I ve never understood the xenophobic point of view

jura2 Sun 22-Dec-19 14:28:59

''jura will you be travelling from SWITZERLAND to protest about something the UK government is doing?''

YES- because it affects us hugely- thanks.

Jabberwok Sun 22-Dec-19 14:08:26

It will be in this house!!!??????

Firecracker123 Sun 22-Dec-19 13:13:37

Yes hallelujah ? of course Big Ben should chime, it should be a national holiday.

Poppyred Sun 22-Dec-19 13:02:55

Hallelujah!

SirChenjin Sun 22-Dec-19 12:47:10

I wasn’t quoting you Chewbacca - so ditto.

Chewbacca Sun 22-Dec-19 12:45:14

Excuse me SirC? confused

My post wasn't about Brexit across the UK. My post was simply pointing out that we in the UK still has the freedom to rejoice/lament; celebrate or protest, irrespective of how you voted or your political leanings.

My grasp of both the geography of the UK, and it's political divide, is perfectly adequate, thank you. Perhaps you should read a post properly before you leap in with a snippy and condescending reposte.

SirChenjin Sun 22-Dec-19 12:37:59

The UK is happy at last

Someone appears to have a very poor grasp of geography and politics. It’s England and Wales, not the UK. Come on now, if you’re going to get all EXCITED!!!!! about Brexit at least get your facts straight.

Chestnut Sun 22-Dec-19 12:07:16

That is an interesting subject Chewbacca and I have started another thread.

Chewbacca Sun 22-Dec-19 11:14:52

Whether you agree with Brexit or not, the UK still has the freedom to rejoice/lament; celebrate/protest. We should all be happy about that. The poor beggars in China (that country that Gagajo so admires) are reduced go hiding SOS notes in boxes of Christmas cards, begging the finder to send help.

LadyGracie Sun 22-Dec-19 11:13:50

Yes!! JenniferEccles smile

Septimia Sun 22-Dec-19 11:13:47

I can see both sides of the argument but, JenniferEccles, you're right it was a democratic vote. As was the election. Some people just seem to be unable to accept defeat and move on.

If the government hadn't been obstructed by its own MPs as well as opposition ones, we'd have had Brexit settled by now and would be getting sorted out - and probably finding that things aren't as bad as we feared.

JenniferEccles Sun 22-Dec-19 11:08:22

Honestly some of you.
LISTEN to yourselves.

It’s called democracy. However you personally feel, the majority vote was to leave the EU and now, hallelujah it seems to be happening at long last, so yes, the moment should be marked.
