The first minister visited people affected by floods today and promised help .As always it didn't make the news ,just twitter
One person who she spoke to said he had thought she was there to "bang the referendum drum" but she hadn't mentioned Independence just asked how she could help and what they needed in the immediate future to make life more bearable.#getting on with the dayjob

Perhaps this country needs to create a sort of Home Guard trained up in the use of sandbags...…[my imagination is running wild at the moment]….

OK I live next to a river in Suffolk. In May 2012 we had the worst flooding event in 30 years of living here.
Environment Agency did nothing
Local District Council did absolutely nothing apart from set up an emergency helpline manned by 2 people. They were considering taking over a community centre for people to stayin overnight
The County Council did nothing.
The only force to do something were the Police who nagged at the Environment Agency all day that homes were at risk of flooding so by the late afternoon the EA dispatched a lorry of sandbags for the community to use...providing you were strong enough to lift them in to a suitable vehicle...which I did helped by a neighbour with a proper Land Rover.
At a subsequent Parish Council meeting the representatives from the Local District Council where shouted down when they explained their "actions" - the famous quote was - "You have to know what you are doing with sandbags"

After 5 years of public meetings, consultants surveying the river etc what remedial works were done? NOTHING

Yet people buy them. Crazy.

And they still allow people to build on flood plains don't they?

But they haven’t cleaned up the rivers and waterways, or stopped cutting down trees or getting rid of sedge cutters.....

The will remind us how much money they have already invested - so stop moaning.
