I've still got my old black passport and am glad we have nice compact ones nowadays, and really don't want a dark coloured one again but eventually will have to have one We never had to have burgundy did we, more lies and propaganda
What I'd really like would be a fluorescent colour. maybe with a reflective bit so if it got lost I'd be able to find it easier. whoever thought a dark blue or black coloured one was a good idea, maybe it has a covert aim of getting us to get new ones more often so more income for the passport office

You’re right Callistemon- that verse is not in the Welsh National anthem.

jura2 Mon 24-Feb-20 11:51:31

Talking about the difference between 'facts' and 'opinion' on another thread. Mrs May announced we would go back to Ye Olde Blue Passports of pre EU Independent UK. But the fact is, it was was clearly black. It was a different size, shape, colour, material and design from the 1980 version, the “iconic” one May was referring to.

Not only that, no Brussels regulation ever required UK passports to be burgundy. There is a rule on common security features, and a non-binding European Council resolution from 1981 recommending burgundy: that’s it. Croatia’s passports are still blue.

And yet, many people actually now 'believe' the old passport were blue- because they have been told they were...

Same here - just checked and I was mistaken, I have only 6 years on my current UK Burgundy with European Union on it passport- as it was a 10 year one.

Just as an aside- my first UK passport was black, not blue. We never had blue passports-- and we never had passports made abroad in the EU.

annodomini Mon 24-Feb-20 10:16:08

I still think of myself as European and I love my Burgundy passport. I am glad to say it will last another 9 years, by which time I may never need one again!

There are of course 3 categories of British migrants to Portugal and other EU states (and Turkey is not one, despite all the scare mongering during the campaign)

holiday visitors who will of course take comprehensive travel/health insurance (which will be more expensive as the EHIC/emergency part won't be covered by our Government)

property owners who spend part of their time in Portugal - same as above

and those with property or renting who have moved to Portugal on a permanent basis

Bodach and Dollymac

Ignore yehbutnobut's provocative post.
And be assured that it was Wales and the Welsh National Anthem to which I referred!

Callistemon Mon 24-Feb-20 09:40:48

Ah well.

And I am surprised at paddyanne's post too - I know you have a loathing for England, paddyanne and all things English but to manage to express that and be disparaging about the Welsh and Northern Irish and the status of Wales in one short post was quite an achievement.

?????????????????????

Dollymac Mon 24-Feb-20 00:39:21

Bodach, I completely understand your standpoint. However, my surname was proscribed
My maiden name was McGregor

Bodach Mon 24-Feb-20 00:07:35

Yehbutnobut and Dollymac - as a Highlander whose clan was always fiercely anti-Jacobite, fighting in support of the British Crown and Government against Jacobite rebellions in 1689, 1715 and 1745/46, I have nothing against that particular (and now redundant) verse..

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 23:30:19

I'm waiting for an apology but as none seems to be forthcoming I'll just say goodnight.

My post was perfectly clear.

moon

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 23:23:37

yehbutnobut didn't read my post properly

Dollymac Sun 23-Feb-20 23:22:25

Yeahbutnobut, that verse, is of course offensive to the Scots
What a palaver over an outdated, jingoistic anthem, that should have been binned many years ago
It's tedious, old fashioned, dull and needs to go, I'm not holding my breath though. ...

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 23:21:00

??????? ??????? ??????? ??????? ??????? ???????

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 23:13:00

Even if it is the best anthem!

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 23:12:30

Any other Welsh grans know if that verse yehbut posted is in Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau?

I can't find it.

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 23:05:29

I am trying to translate the Welsh National Anthem into English but don't recognise that verse, yehbutnobut
Sorry
Never sung it in Wales

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 23:04:01

That doesn't sound like the Welsh National Anthem to me confused

MawB Sun 23-Feb-20 23:03:27

Wouldn’t it be “God Save the King” ? (George I) wink

Yehbutnobut Sun 23-Feb-20 22:58:14

One of the verses of the national anthem that you think is wonderful Callistemon

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 22:51:32

We're not a colony, we're a country with the best National Anthem and our own flag which is not incorporated in the uUnion flag.
Acts of Union 1536 and 1542 state that Wales is a country.
And we have our own language.

Sorry paddyanne.

paddyanne Sun 23-Feb-20 22:43:05

but but but ,you're NOT Independent ,you're part of a UNION ,much as most of you hate to admit it ENGLAND is in partnership with Scotland, the only other signatory of the Act of Union. To be truly independent you'll need to cut the ties ,Wales and NI were "aquired" in a different way so they 'll need to be asked what they want ,to stay annexed like a colony or go it alone

Callistemon Sun 23-Feb-20 22:20:44

Australia, New Zealand, some Balkan countries and several other countries, easily googled, I'm sorry I cannot do links but they are listed on an NHS site.
28 countries in all

NotSpaghetti Sun 23-Feb-20 20:34:38

jura2, I think they are trying to work out if they can cover this from Portugal because they want us to go on holidaying there and for the British winter visitors to go on visiting.

I don't think for a moment Boris Johnson would want to "buy into" an EHIC.

jura2 Sun 23-Feb-20 20:29:19

which ones? There is one with Switzerland, as we have a reciprocal agreement with each other- don't know of any others. Please can you be more specific?
