Keir Starmer .

Grandad1943 Thu 09-Apr-20 19:08:41

Anniebach there was I believe an Change Uk Alience party that formed out of disgruntled labour MPs in the last Parliament.

I then think they changed their name to justchange UK. However they all lost their seats at the last general election.

POGS I believe you are correct in stating that they formed into an alliance with the Liberal Party that had about four seats in parliament at that time if my memory serves me correct.

I believe it was the fact that they were such prominent front bench members of the Labour Party that made the whole event so noteworthy at the time.

Is that correct as you remember it?

Lesley she stood down ages ago. But do feel free to make uninformed comments.

MaizieD public funding of political parties has been discussed many times during my long life. However, I believe that no bill has ever got to even having a first reading in Parliament.

It will never come about for the reasons already laid out in this thread.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 18:36:27

Yes I agree maizie

MaizieD Thu 09-Apr-20 18:34:11

I'd love to see political parties being state funded. I think the present system tends towards being corrupt and makes a mockery of democracy. Money buys power...

Grandad1943 Thu 09-Apr-20 18:19:06

Whitewavemark2 Quote [ None of them ever considered a threat to the Labour Party though] End Quote.

Whitewavemark2, I agree they never threatened the existence of the Labour Party, they did, however, draw a great deal of attention when those that formed them broke away from the Labour Party amongst a great deal of publicity.

However, they never could find the financial backing that would have given them any longterm future.

POGS I have just replied, The Gang of Four were not as claimed by grandad43 from the left of the Labour Party,
they formed with the Libs and we now have the Lib Dem’s

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 18:16:21

None a threat to the LP

Anniebach Thu 09-Apr-20 18:14:11

The 4 mp’s who became The Gang of Four were of the left ?
No way.

The Alliance Party are in N.Ireland

The Independence Party was right wing

Grandad1943 Thu 09-Apr-20 18:10:49

Great minds think alike POGS. ?

Lesley60 Thu 09-Apr-20 18:10:00

I just hope he’s getting rid of Diane Abbot

POGS Thu 09-Apr-20 18:06:18

Grandad. Snap

POGS Thu 09-Apr-20 18:05:14

Anniebach.

Have you forgotten ' the gang of 4' SDP.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 18:03:50

None of them ever considered a threat to the Labour Party though

Grandad1943 Thu 09-Apr-20 18:01:37

The Gang of Four and the Alliance party come to mind anniebach. The independence party I also believe was formed out of Labour but I stand to be corrected on that one.

I feel their are more should anyone care to do some research.

Anniebach Thu 09-Apr-20 17:32:03

I can only think of George Galloway who launched a new left
wing party but he didn’t leave the Labour Party, he was expelled .

Who are the others grandad43 ?

Grandad1943 Thu 09-Apr-20 16:50:27

The Conservative Party will never agree to any change in the funding of political parties away from what is now.

I would also believe that a large majority of the British public would never agree to taxation being used to fund Political parties.

Just pie in the sky thinking.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 15:58:21

monica yes I agree. Level playing field and all that.

Anniebach Thu 09-Apr-20 15:54:07

Many breakaway left wing parties have been launched ?

Please name these parties granddad43

suziewoozie Thu 09-Apr-20 15:47:09

We should MO but we won’t.

M0nica Thu 09-Apr-20 15:42:01

Perhaps we should change the way all political parties are funded.

Grandad1943 Thu 09-Apr-20 14:05:15

Whitewavemark2, who in Britain would fund an independent left of a centre political party. Blair tried it by climbing into bed with the bankers, and we all know where that finished up.

Many "breakaway" left-wing parties have been launched by disgruntled Labour MPs over the years but all have fallen over finance backing.

For further evidence just look to the Lib Dems as they have never possessed the finances to truly breakthrough as a credible alternative government.

It takes a great deal of money to run a credible political party in Britain.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 09-Apr-20 13:46:43

We will see. That won’t happen very quickly and if Starmer looks like a winner that will be enough to silence at least some of them.

Anniebach Thu 09-Apr-20 13:43:20

Whitewave. Corbyn promised the unions a free rein , they
want the same from Starmer, if they don’t get what they want
they will work against him to get a new leader from the far left.
