Oh dear, it's not going well is it?

trisher Sat 02-May-20 16:29:37

Fake news is rapidly becoming unacceptable as a term so complex is the issue. There is no doubt that this article comes into one of the new categories now being used
In November 2017, Claire Wardle announced she has rejected the phrase "fake news" and "censors it in conversation", finding it "woefully inadequate" to describe the issues. She now speaks of "information pollution" and distinguishes between three types of problems: 'mis-information', 'dis-information', and 'mal-information':
Mis-information: false information disseminated without harmful intent.
Dis-information: created and shared by people with harmful intent.
Mal-information: the sharing of "genuine" information with the intent to cause harm
The fact that so many are happy to see this sort of stuff categorised simply as "News" is very worrying.

Fake news? Meghan doesn’t really exist? Am I about to wake up in the shower? grin

maddyone Sat 02-May-20 16:10:21

What a ridiculous post from Clawdy. Read the above post from merlotgran and you will see how ridiculous your post is. Fake news, when a person doesn’t like the news, they declare it to be fake. It reminds me of a certain President.

Anniebach Sat 02-May-20 16:06:55

Fake news, the interview with ITV was fake ? ?

merlotgran Sat 02-May-20 16:01:13

But most people have just lapped up the fake news

Oh, so Megxit never happened and they haven't left the UK and they're not living in LA?

Frogmore cottage is not standing empty having had £2.4 million spent on it?

The huge apartment at KP next door to the Cambridge's was not turned down and is now standing empty after millions were spent refurbishing that as well?

She's not estranged from her father?

Silly me for not realising all that was fake news.

Clawdy Sat 02-May-20 15:42:52

How anyone could take the side of a disgusting rag like the Mail is beyond me. The posts on here are vindictive and vile. Alright, I don't know what Meghan is really like - neither do you. But most people have just lapped up the fake news and views published in the tabloids - who have basically disliked her from the start.

Isn’t it funny how we each look at people and see different things?

How funny, SueDonim. I think George is like William as a small boy, and that Charlotte has got Carole Middleton's hooded eyes.

Anniebach Sat 02-May-20 14:15:34

Yoko Ono and Linda MacCartney married pop singers , the
public didn’t pay for their security or provide them with a house in the grounds of Windsor Castle .

Poor girl, just trying to do her best

If her best is splitting up two once close brothers and their families and estrangement from her own father and family then I think she's done very well.

I think so far she has achieved every goal in her long term plan. I don't think she had any intention of staying in the UK and Archie was her ticket out.

Taking on the media and appearing to ignore advice might turn out to be a big mistake. She's not invincible.

SueDonim Sat 02-May-20 13:39:52

That’s interesting, Sparkelfizz as I think the two boys are mini-Michael Middletons but Charlotte isn’t. Like Marmight I think Charlotte is very like Sarah Chatto as well as the queen.

Isn’t it funny how we each look at people and see different things? smile

Poor girl, just trying to do her best. I'm not a fan of hereditory titles, happily see the 'upper end' of the class system demolished to be honest, must be awful trying to cope with all the awful rules about presedence and who's the most important person based solely on an accident of birth. Add to that the press intrusion, constantly seeking stories about things that are deeply personal, embarassing and well beyond what might count as 'in the public interest'. She seems to be suffering from the same sort of loathing that dogged Yoko Ono and Linda McCartney, just to name just a couple of self-confident and independent women who married public icons. We are prepared to set them up and pull them down too easily when really, it's their business not ours. And of course they should be protected from nutters and criminals who mean them harm, just the same as anyone else who lives with credible threats to their life.

I didn’t realise she sent the letter, or a copy of the letter, to five other people. Why on earth did she do that? That suggests that she wanted it to be leaked in my opinion. If a person wants a letter to be kept private that person surely wouldn’t send out five copies of it to other people. What very strange behaviour. confused

trisher Sat 02-May-20 13:04:10

Copyright of letters remains with the author, even after it is sent. Details here www.britishcopyright.org/information/letters/

If, as it seems, parts of the ‘evidence’ do not comply with legal necessities, either Meghan was badly advised or she was unduly stubborn and insisted they were included. As she has employed one of the best barristers in the field, I think he might be a QC but not totally sure of that, it seems improbable that she was badly advised. That would therefore suggest she was determined to include the parts that were struck out. It will be interesting to follow the case when it comes up later this year.

Jabberwok Sat 02-May-20 10:59:52

I always understood that once a letter had been posted it became the property of the recipient to do with as they pleased, hence the warning to be very careful what you put in writing! I could be wrong though! Question is, why would you send a copy of said letter to 5 other people if it's private?! Her father was approached by the Mail to verify this letter, which he did. Which leaves one or more of the friends actually contacting the Mail? If so, why isn't she suing them?
Yes, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Princess Charlotte! Apparently she(?!) has been making Pasta dishes for the housebound in Norfolk! These children are certainly being brought up brilliantly! Well done those people.

Baggs Sat 02-May-20 10:27:59

it's a very small victory the Mail is choosing for some reason

Odd way of putting it, trisher. You know perfectly well what the Mail's reason is: they think they've proved something, have a (bit of a) victory. Of course they're crowing about it. Why be obtuse about it? ?

I haven't followed this story in detail but one detail has struck me as debatable. When you send a letter to someone, does it still beling to you, the writer, or does it belong to the person you sent it to? My own feeling is that it belongs to the recipient, rather as a gift would. What do other people think?

lemsip Sat 02-May-20 10:19:14

all siblings don't talk the same!!

GrannyLaine Sat 02-May-20 10:15:55

A fair comment trisher. I think it's also fair to say that an alternative choice that the D&DoS had would have been to quietly drop all proceedings in the face of a world pandemic. Even if they win the case, much harm will be done.

25Avalon Sat 02-May-20 10:07:22

The coals are being raked over just when it had all died down. It would have been better if the court case had never been brought as mud will fly. Poor Harry is deluded. He couldn’t fight his mother’s battle with the press who he blames for her death so is now fighting them with this as the excuse. He will probably stay with Meghan for the sake of Archie who he wants to have a normal happy childhood which he didn’t.

TerriBull Sat 02-May-20 09:58:42

Happy Birthday Princess Charlotte, 5 today! cupcake I also think she is an incarnation of The Queen. Lovely pictures of her on line in a very pretty dress.

Rosalyn69 Sat 02-May-20 09:50:02

If they want privacy I suggest they watch Off The Grid and build a cabin out in the wilds and live a quiet self sufficient life.

Anniebach Sat 02-May-20 09:49:53

The same spirit as Anne ?

travelsafar Sat 02-May-20 09:27:23

SueDonim I agree, she looks very similar to our wonderful Queen. She has steely determination in her eyes!!! smile
