That's really a right wing rather than left wing idea, though, isn't it? That sort of 'equality of opportunity' involves no consideration at all of the veil of ignorance. The person making their way to their first million dollars, or to the Presidency, often has no interest in the effects of their actions on anyone. They don't consider them through the veil of ignorance.
I think it is odd to label consideration of the effects of your actions on other people as being 'left wing'. It does make the right wing focus on the accumulation of wealth seem somewhat selfish, and surprising that so many people who are never going to accumulate wealth actually subscribe to it. (I have seen this explained as Stockholm Syndrome)
