Will he resign?

News breaking tonight that Dominic Cummings and his wife, when ill with Covid-19, put their child in the car and drove 260 miles from London to Durham so that they could isolate at his parent's place and his parents look after the child. This happened some time after 27th March. Remember lockdown was imposed on 23rd March.

Seen in his parent's garden with his child on 5th April.

Neil Fergusson resigned because his lover visited his house after lockdown.

Scotland's Chief Medical Officer had to resign after visiting her second home twice after lockdown.

Cummings and his wife drive 260 miles to stay with his parents (who must be in their 60s at the very least)... What will he do?

Story is in most of the MSM now.

I am also so, so angry, I haven't felt this way about anything for years. He is such a lying b.....d.

silverlining48 Sun 24-May-20 19:46:27

A petition shows that people are angry and I haven't been as angry fir a long time. Nothing to do with remainers or leavers.

Callistemon Sun 24-May-20 19:43:49

lizzypopbottle I am in tears reading your post. I hope all is well with them now and that you'll soon be able to go and visit them.

Yes, I think you should send that to Boris.
Send it to Carrie too. She may have more empathy.

GardenofEngland Sun 24-May-20 19:41:55

What will a petition do. What is done is done. I see people visiting relatives in our road every day. I see hoardes of people from London parking up and going to the beach. This petition is not about breaking the rules it is political and dare I say the remainers against the leavers.

Someone said “to be fair Emu could not have sacked Rod Hull either”

I am genuinely the angriest I have been in many a long year.

silverlining48 Sun 24-May-20 19:39:50

Thanks MissA. cupcake

Callistemon Sun 24-May-20 19:38:12

Not just Labour or Lib Dem voting/remain voters either!!

I think Boris just lost the next election.

silverlining48 Sun 24-May-20 19:32:46

Found it myself thanks.

Hetty58 Sun 24-May-20 19:32:38

I've got a tent - does that count? You really couldn't make it up. It's like a new series of 'Yes, Prime Minister'. Millions of people are hopping mad.

The film 'Brexit: The Uncivil War' explains how the 'leave' campaign won. Dominic Cummings told the "leave" staff to keep repeating "£350 million and Turkey". The fact is we never did send £350 million per week to the EU and Turkey was not about to join the EU.

The man lies through his teeth. BJ, is also, of course a habitual liar. Perhaps that's why they get on so well, but it made me feel sick today when I heard BJ use the word "integrity" when talking about DC.

Change.org I think someone put a link up earlier, Silverlining.

One of our MPs is Jo Johnson I wonder what his response would be??

vegansrock Sun 24-May-20 19:24:24

urmstongran so it’s only ok if your family have a separate cottage in their grounds?
What if they’ve got a second home we can stay in? Or a caravan? Too many loopholes to defend.

Jishere Sun 24-May-20 19:24:03

That is sad Lizzy and I gather has been a painful time for you. I hope your daughter is doing ok. Sending love and hugs to you, fingers crossed we will all be with our loved ones soonx

Dumpling is that the overall figure as when I looked there was 10 petitions going?

silverlining48 Sun 24-May-20 19:18:50

How do I find the petition?

Luckygirl Sun 24-May-20 19:17:24

Seriously underestimated indeed. This is from the official Civil Service twitter account........

"After the announcement at the daily press briefing, the UK Civil Service official Twitter account published a blunt message. The tweet, which has since been deleted, said: "Arrogant and offensive.
"Can you imagine having to work with these truth twisters?"

NfkDumpling Sun 24-May-20 19:16:56

I agree Lucky.

NfkDumpling Sun 24-May-20 19:15:57

lizzypopbottle Have you written to your MP? You only need to copy and paste your excellent post.

I hope the rules are relaxed soon so you can see your family in Bristol. It's heart-breaking when so many are giving up so much while ....!

Nanna58 Sun 24-May-20 19:15:18

He hopes this will go away, more fool him .

Nanna58 Sun 24-May-20 19:13:20

Just emailed my MP, I think Johnson has badly underestimated how angry people are.

Luckygirl Sun 24-May-20 19:12:31

The only thing that surprises me is that BJ does not have the political nous to realise that he has shot himself in the foot. It can only be explained by the notion that Cummings has some hold over him. It may be, as another poster suggested, that BJ endorsed Cummings' action and knows that he will be for the chop if he admits that.

But I suspect that Cummings' hold over BJ is longstanding, as so many people have wanted to get rid of him for so long, but BJ has dug his heels in. There is no other rational explanation for his behaviour.

Daisymae Sun 24-May-20 19:09:01

If he had just admitted a misjudgement then he might have got away with it. But this is just blatant. It's yet again a question of if I say its true then it is. Twitter is in meltdown. Cummings sits on SAGE for heavens sake, he understood what the country was/is being asked to do.

NfkDumpling Sun 24-May-20 19:07:23

106,000 have signed the petition now. Doesn't that mean there has to be a debate? May be entertaining.

My daughter and son-in-law both had the virus. Both were ill with cough, temperature and loss of taste and smell. Both stayed indoors and recovered without putting pressure on the NHS. At one point, my daughter, who was heavily pregnant, with two boys aged five and three years, to look after, passed out and fell, witnessed by her children who were frightened by the experience. They all managed in circumstances much more difficult than certain others' e.g. one four year old (not a toddler!) and two parents, one of whom was, apparently, asymptomatic and fit enough to drive 260 miles with said four year old and sick wife.

If my son, who lives in London, or I (in the North East) had set off to drive to Bristol to help my daughter with childcare (desperately needed) when she was about to have her baby (she had recovered), we would almost certainly have been stopped, lectured, fined and turned back. I would have travelled through the most aggressively policed areas e.g. Derbyshire, probably chased by drones. Of course, neither of us went to help, even though we were sorely needed and wished to go. Nor were we expected or asked to go under the circumstances. My son-in-law remained at home looking after his two boys and missed the birth of his daughter. BJ was present when his son was born.

We stayed home! We followed the rules that we believed applied to everyone! We felt, and still feel, upset and, in my case, traumatised by not being able to help our family! My daughter was left to the care of strangers, brilliant though the midwives were. I have not been there to help her since she came home. My granddaughter is now three weeks old and I have no idea when I will be able to travel to Bristol. I'm sure many other people will identify with my situation. I feel for the many families who have lost loved ones to this virus and were not allowed to be by their side of attend their funeral.

Of course the press have leapt on this DC revelation and it is being used as a stick to beat the government. It's likely that many others in public service are looking over their shoulders now, waiting to be found out for breaking the rules. However, there's definitely, one rule for us and another for the architects of that rule.

Jane 10 Nicola Sturgeon didn't "cover up" the Nike conference at all the figures were always counted in the daily totals. If you'r e getting your knickers in a twist about 70 overseas visitors and 20 Scots in a hotel in Edinburgh why aren't you foaming at the mouth about the Football game a month later where thousands travelled from Spain when it was at the height of the pandemic OR Cheltenham where 250.000 attended over 4 days ...and the Scottish health authrities say the people at the Nike conference were all tracked and traced ...sorry SNP bad wont wash where this is concerned .
