Will he resign?

News breaking tonight that Dominic Cummings and his wife, when ill with Covid-19, put their child in the car and drove 260 miles from London to Durham so that they could isolate at his parent's place and his parents look after the child. This happened some time after 27th March. Remember lockdown was imposed on 23rd March.

Seen in his parent's garden with his child on 5th April.

Neil Fergusson resigned because his lover visited his house after lockdown.

Scotland's Chief Medical Officer had to resign after visiting her second home twice after lockdown.

Cummings and his wife drive 260 miles to stay with his parents (who must be in their 60s at the very least)... What will he do?

Story is in most of the MSM now.

I'm getting confused.
Were Mr and Mrs C both really ill at the same time?
In which case they needed someone in a hurry to look after the child, someone nearby.
If both were ill at the same time then how did one manage to drive 4/5 hours to Durham?

If they were not ill at the same time then one could have looked after the child?

I'm sure that they could have got food deliveries too. I know it's difficult but it is possible with perseverance. Or a relative could shop.

What were the official instructions, again, for people with signs of the virus?

Chewbacca Sun 24-May-20 12:32:39

Agreed MissA. Quite how his family must be feeling in the midst of all this doesn't bare thinking about. I'll bet they'd have given anything in the world to be by his side but no, they "followed the rules" and STAYED HOME. But the man who told them to do that didn't actually bother to do it himself.

Daisymae Sun 24-May-20 12:33:40

Turns out that no-one had to look after his son anyway.

MissAdventure Sun 24-May-20 12:33:42

What were the instructions on what to do if you felt you had signs of the virus, again?

Happygirl79 Sun 24-May-20 12:35:18

Mail on Sunday today states that DC s mother is 71 years old
Shame on him and shame on the government for backtracking and trying to protect him

whiterabbit01 Sun 24-May-20 12:37:01

We've had three days of Dominic Cummings on the national news, plus hundreds of forums discussing the issue. For gods sake, he's a human being who wanted to see his old and ill parents.

I'm ashamed of the witch hunts I see in this country. It's like we are living in the time of the witch hunter general.

All this news is just political points scoring.

What I want to know is what the government are doing about the issues facing our country, not whether he should resign or not.

Shame on everyone.

Yes, I think it was her birthday just at the time this terrible, unavoidable crisis occurred.

You know, the crisis of one parent showing signs, the other fine, and the unavoidable decision to have to drive miles to get "help".

icanhandthemback Sun 24-May-20 12:40:56

Callistemon, I think Mrs C got ill first and then Mr C after they got to Durham. I think the problem with this virus is that you don't know how vicious it is going to be so maybe they were trying to be practical in case of the worst case scenario. We know nothing of their medical histories to be able to know if they had a reason to suspect they might be really compromised by the virus. I can see a number of reasons why, as a family, they made the decisions they made but other trips make a complete mockery of the Lockdown possible.
I have to take issue with Mrs C saying that you should make a game out the virus. I think I would have wanted to keep my child away from anybody with the virus including my husband.
I really would like to know too how the reporters get away with not socially distancing either. There is complete hypocrisy from a lot of people over this!

MissAdventure Sun 24-May-20 12:41:21

Old and ill parents?
That's a new one; surprised it hasn't been trotted out as yet.

Paperbackwriter Sun 24-May-20 12:45:23

There are many parents in normal times who, when both have flu, still have to take care of a child or two. You just do it. In shifts of an hour each if that's what it takes. Also, if you're THAT ill, you certainly could even contemplate getting in a car and driving for half a day. There is no excuse for what Cummings did, none at all. And he knew it at the time.
(On which, it is perfectly possible to drive 250 miles without stopping. OH does it often, when going to our Cornwall house - though a child would definitely need a lay-be wee, I'd have thought)

Callistemon Sun 24-May-20 12:45:49

whiterabbit I thought I was confused but it looks as if you're even more so!!

I hear there are new Government guidelines coming out today:

How to Spread the Virus and Create Herd Immunity
By D Cummings

Paperbackwriter Sun 24-May-20 12:48:49

whiterabbit01 Are you being satyrical here? God, I hope so! "he wanted to see his old and ill parents"? They weren't ill - he was, and - worse - taking Corona virus with him to share with them! Don't we all want to see our relatives? It makes the whole lockdown thing a joke if those who made up the rules can't be arsed to stick to them. I foresee total anarchy from now on. Nobody will do anything they are told to do by any government officials.

donna1964 Sun 24-May-20 12:50:23

I would also like to add... While Cummins was involved in drawing up the rules & recommendations. A young boy aged 13 died without his family at his bedside and his siblings could not attend his Funeral!! How is it right for Cummins to do what he did when others can't. Seemingly his Sister who lives around the corner from him offered to look after his child...he had close friends also living very close to him.

Mollygo Sun 24-May-20 12:52:00

MaizieD yes I have trawled through the whole thread and read all the media provided information quoted here. Thank you for summarising it again for me. Perhaps in future I should always trust the contributors to the Spectator.
Evidently his wife is quite anxious to earn money and fame by reporting dramatically on her husband, despite the fact that she is equally guilty.
I hope my DH loves me more than that.

GagaJo Sun 24-May-20 12:54:26

I think the VERY last time I'd go to see my elderly mother is when I'm exhibiting C19 symptoms!

Mollygo Sun 24-May-20 12:58:09

Donna1964 can you let me know where to find the information about his sister living around the corner from him please?

Reddog1 Sun 24-May-20 12:58:59

He should be sacked and the police should find him.
Flagrant breach of lockdown rules.

Nanniejc1 Sun 24-May-20 12:59:25

Well I’m sorry to say that I would’ve done the same & I would have encouraged my children to bring the grandchildren to me to look after if they themselves were ill.
This is all getting ridiculous,it’s a witch hunt ......the media & the other political parties have been trying to smear & get rid of Mr Cummings for months ........because he is a staunch Brexiteer & let’s face it the media ,Labour Party,Lib Dem’s & the rest just don’t get it.........We as a country voted to leave the EU & they are still all trying to overturn it.Its wrong that the media can hound anyone out of their job.
There are so many other things going on in there world but they chose to put this on their front pages........What about all the rubber dinghies filled with illegals.....hardly any mention or the child grooming gangs .....nothing .Its disgusting, the whole thing is a witch hunt!!!

MissAdventure Sun 24-May-20 13:01:16

I'm sorry to say that there are some selfish people around.

Galaxy Sun 24-May-20 13:11:58

I dont know about you nanniejcl but I am able to hold two thoughts in my head, so I can express concern about child explotation and aldo hold a view on Dominic Cummings.

Galaxy Sun 24-May-20 13:12:35

Cant spell exploitation though.

FarNorth Sun 24-May-20 13:13:59

Too right MissA, often they are quite stupid too.

oldgoat Sun 24-May-20 13:14:02

Of course, Johnson needs Cummings!

Observe that every time Johnson is attempting to answer questions, that he plunges his right hand into his inside jacket pocket, signalling that he needs the answer relayed through his ear piece?

MissAdventure Sun 24-May-20 13:14:25

2 out of 3 ain't bad, galaxy.
According to Meatloaf, anyway.
