No one has posted about George Floyd!

Disgraceful killing.

Are we unable to look beyond our own immediate locality? Have we stopped caring about anything beyond bloody Covid 19 and the fact we can't see our grandchildren?

Sorry, not my usual sort of post, will don my tin helmet and get behind the sofa.

SueDonim Mon 01-Jun-20 12:30:34

Lynne54 your post is a disgrace. angry Please tell me exactly when the trial finding George Floyd guilty of passing a forged bank note took place? It was an alleged crime, which, as far as I know, not even in America warrants the death penalty.

You also must have seen a different film to many other people. The film I saw depicted George Floyd lying on the ground for some minutes, at first gasping words out and then not speaking or moving. At no point after that did he get up and get into a vehicle of his own volition.

CherryCezzy Mon 01-Jun-20 12:19:14

I know I'm a little behind with this thread but I just don't get the narrative of young black men, criminality, drug gangs or high on drugs.
George Floyd was a man in his 40s!
The age difference between the police officer and Mr Floyd was 2 years.

Davidhs Mon 01-Jun-20 10:55:57

Yes Maizie but what you forgot was that only occasionally is am unarmed person killed by police the vast majority are armed and shooting, with the number of guns in the US that is not surprising.

Of course a higher proportion of blacks are likely to involved in criminality, because many more are deprived in many ways. It’s just the same in the U.K. disadvantaged minorities make up a high proportion of the prison population, poverty is far more important than race. Of course the activists play the race card and that starts a riot.

If that makes me a White Supremacist so be it.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 01-Jun-20 10:41:28

I totally deplore the actions of the police, pleased he has been charged for murder.

I have just watched footage online of an elderly white lady trying to protect her shop from a gang of black youths, they eventually turned on her beating her with a 6 foot plank of what looked like 2 by 4 wood.

These youths may be disenfranchised from society but they are not helping the situation or the memory of George Floyd.

Oopsminty Mon 01-Jun-20 10:28:20

Davidhs

Dare I suggest you do a spot of research to see what actually happened because I don't think you're aware of the facts

Have you seen the 6 minute clip of what happened?

The people who were filming were asking the policeman to stop what he was doing.

George Floyd had became unresponsive and his nose was bleeding.

The people watching were being polite and almost begging him to get off

It was quite evident that he posed no threat whatsoever

But the policeman just kept kneeling on him

Until he was dead

You think that's OK?

Davidhs Mon 01-Jun-20 10:22:13

This is not murder so don’t fan the flames, it’s manslaughter, to be murder the police would have had to deliberately set out to kill him which was not the case.

As long as suspects resist arrest there will be cases like this, if I had unknowingly passed a forged banknote I would not have resisted arrest, nor would any others on Gransnet .

MaizieD Mon 01-Jun-20 10:19:45

Sorry, forgot the link for reference

www.snopes.com/fact-check/do-police-kill-more-whites-than-black-people/

MaizieD Mon 01-Jun-20 10:18:52

I can't believe Davidh's post, either.

You might not have meant it like that, David but it reeks of White Supremacy.

From Snopes, the fact checking site. Figures are old (to 2016) but show the trend

According to the most recent census data, there are nearly 160 million more white people in America than there are black people. White people make up roughly 62 percent of the U.S. population but only about 49 percent of those who are killed by police officers. African Americans, however, account for 24 percent of those fatally shot and killed by the police despite being just 13 percent of the U.S. population. As The Post noted in a new analysis, that means black Americans are 2.5 times as likely as white Americans to be shot and killed by police officers.

Oopsminty Mon 01-Jun-20 10:16:31

Maybe things happened after the 2 minutes of film which we saw

You might have seen only 2 minutes but the footage that many people saw was 6 minutes long.

So yes, if you say you saw 2 minutes, I can assure you that things DID happen

The man died with a knee on his carotid artery.

He was killed by the police for passing a fake note in a deli

Galaxy Mon 01-Jun-20 10:16:21

The violence was carried out by a white man.

JenniferEccles Mon 01-Jun-20 10:14:09

Unfortunately a large number of young black males in the US (and to a lesser extent here) seem to have a huge chip on their shoulder and this often manifests itself in mindless violence and looting as a protest against alleged racism.

There will be an investigation into the police behaviour.

Furret Mon 01-Jun-20 10:06:32

Lynne he was alleged to have passed a counterfeit 20$ note. I once was given a fake £10 note and never noticed until it was spotted.

Whatever the circumstances this man was murdered in broad daylight by violent, racist police. Thugs. And the so-called ‘president’ is fanning the flames for his own ends.

So this is how to Make America Great Again?

Shameful.

Galaxy Mon 01-Jun-20 10:02:09

I cant breathe has been said by numerous people who died in restraint incidents. You can see the case studies if you google restraint and I can't breathe.

Oopsminty Mon 01-Jun-20 09:57:47

If you can say I cant breathe, I am sure you can breathe. He did not die there and then as he stood up and was put in the back of a police car.

Lynne54!

I can't believe you've written that

He did NOT stand up and get in the car.

Why on earth don't people get facts right. Especially in a case like this.

The policeman killed the man. With the help of his 3 chums

It was deplorable

Whitewavemark2 Mon 01-Jun-20 09:45:26

He was taken away in an ambulance already dying. He was walking to the police car and then murdered by the policeman.

JenniferEccles Mon 01-Jun-20 09:42:59

At what point in this saga was the criminal escorted to the police car as he was walking then?

Galaxy Mon 01-Jun-20 08:46:07

He knelt on his neck David.

Davidhs Mon 01-Jun-20 08:35:56

In 2018 49 police officers were killed on duty in the US, how many riots have started because any of them were killed?. How much sympathy do their families get. If it was a white man died during an arrest there would have been no riot, whites are involved in criminality and are handled in exactly the same way as Blacks or Hispanics - with extreme caution.

We’ve seen so called race riots in the U.K. it’s an excuse for the criminal underclass to exploit the breakdown in law and order. There is no doubt that drugs play a big part in criminality and a large number of arrests are high on drugs which makes the person irrational violent and very difficult to subdue and secure. Every police office knows the very last thing you want to happen is for someone to die in your charge, black or white, because the consequences are severe. This case was not racism, it’s exactly what causes a riot which is to be avoided at all costs, many others have died in the riots, not to mention looting and other criminality.

Even in the UK there is open hostility to the police and other public services, anyone in uniform. It’s not just ethnic minorities it’s across the population, the real divide is between the “haves and the have nots” and the uniforms represent the “haves”.

Nanna58 Mon 01-Jun-20 07:47:34

I think people do care, I know that I care immensely, but there seems to be such horror and misery in the world at the moment that sometimes it’s just too much , and you need to concentrate on things like getting your hair done or seeing the grandchildren just to keep sane. But I think there isn’t a GN’r out there who isn’t saddened and outraged about mans inhumanity to man.

Grannynannywanny Mon 01-Jun-20 07:37:10

If you can say I cant breathe, I am sure you can breathe

I suspect anyone who has cared for a seriously covid patient will disagree strongly.

Grannynannywanny Mon 01-Jun-20 07:28:31

Lynn54 your account of what happened during this barbaric incident bears little resemblance to the video shown worldwide.

Mr Floyd pleaded for his life as he struggled to breath air into his lungs. He had a knee pressed into his neck for almost 9 minutes during which he became unresponsive and the savages responsible were unable to detect a pulse. But still continued to kneel on his neck while an ambulance was summoned.

He did not stand up from there and get into a car. His lifeless body was lifted on a stretcher into an ambulance.

Despite police officers fully trained in emergency first aid no attempt was made to resuscitate him. The knee was still on his neck for a further 3 mins after he was unconscious

Whitewavemark2 Mon 01-Jun-20 06:40:13

rosecarmel

Thank you for posting the MLK quote.

It’s message should stand as a beacon and goal for every government.

Nannee49 Mon 01-Jun-20 05:56:06

If you are of white heritage, as I am, it's impossible to fully know what it's like to be a person of colour. We simply do not experience the constant never ending emphasis of shade of skin and negative associations.

To live with that as a starting point and still go on to create decent lives for themselves and their families takes a courage I doubt I possess.

whywhywhy Mon 01-Jun-20 04:44:37

It's disgusting, he was a human being. The cops in USA have turned even more violent and fuelled by Trump. I have several relatives over there and they hate the way the country is changing under Trump's leadership.

rosecarmel Mon 01-Jun-20 04:07:56

Lynne, you couldn't remove the prejudicial tone from your post any more than you could could remove the color black from a person's skin to make it white-
