There are 1000’s of protesters in Hyde Park as I post this, no social distancing.

When in two to three weeks time the UK Covid-19 figures go up and more people die these protesters will be responsible!

The Home Secretary could have stopped it. I wouldn't mind betting she had a very good idea what would happen. It's a good opportunity to "blame" people and I'm afraid the people who caused the violence fell into the trap.

I only hope this doesn't distract from a thorough investigation by PHE and the Equalities Minister into BAME deaths caused by COVID.

PS. Other people are saying bricks were thrown, not a bike. I'm not excusing brick throwing, but I just wanted to get the facts straight.

Oopsminty Sat 06-Jun-20 22:29:12

Apologies for the Mail but I am struggling to locate the video anywhere else. It appears that the bike was pushed in the general direction of the horses, causing the rifer to fall.

Why was it allowed? No thought for the police or the hospital staff resulting from this protest. For every 400 people there 1 will have Covid, I take it they won’t object to treatment. How does this help anyone? Over 70 and vulnerable been in for 11 weeks, I can’t believe it this was allowed or people thinking aPandemic doesn’t matter.

growstuff Sat 06-Jun-20 22:21:19

I've just watched a video of the police officer falling from the horse. I can see bikes lying on the ground, but I couldn't see a bike being thrown and I watched it a few times. It's not clear why she fell. Maybe somebody has seen a different video.

PS. I understand she's seriously injured and hope she recovers.

You could be right suziewoozie, a second spike may well have already been triggered by actions prior to today's demonstrations, but I honestly believe that these actions today will not have helped and will likely add to the spikes, and are therefore equally irresponsible. There appeared to be NO social distancing. Their wish to demonstrate is entirely understandable, as the actions resulting the death of George Floyd were truly despicable, but mass gatherings in the present pandemic crisis risk putting us back into a strict lockdown as the R number could well go above 1 as a result of their actions. I, for one, am not happy about that. Are you?

growstuff Sat 06-Jun-20 22:16:53

Blink This isn't about aping America. Remember the student riots? The previous London riots?

Callistemon Sat 06-Jun-20 22:16:31

I heard that and wondered why anyone would throw
themselves off a horse.
A very odd thing to say.

Daisymae Sat 06-Jun-20 22:09:50

Thought that the BBC's news tonight was odd. The reporter said that a policewoman threw herself off her horse??? Which is so odd as online the incident is clearly the result of a bike being thrown at the horse which resulted in the police officer falling off and the terrified horse bolting.

Sparkling Sat 06-Jun-20 22:07:01

Absolutely disgusting, in a Pandemic, what a way to express a view.

Oopsminty Sat 06-Jun-20 22:06:25

I'm appalled at the recent pictures of rioting in London, with Police coming under attack, missiles being hurled. Why do we have to ape what's going on in the States?

It's global, Blinko

Not just here

growstuff Sat 06-Jun-20 21:57:25

maddyone I have expressed my opinion about people breaking lockdown before. I make no exception for this protest.

growstuff Sat 06-Jun-20 21:55:49

maddyone A previous poster conflated "knee bending" and the protest and dismissed both in the same sentence. It read as though she dismissed any solidarity with those protesting against racism.

maddyone Sat 06-Jun-20 21:47:06

Normally I would have no problem with people protesting about whatever they wish to protest about, that’s their business, not mine. But I object enormously at this particular time when people are breaking the law to protest. The law is temporarily in force to protect public health and it is being ignored.

maddyone Sat 06-Jun-20 21:42:42

Knee bending certainly doesn’t spread Covid19 but thousands of people thronged together without social distancing or masks certainly does spread Covid19. I thought my darling girl and her husband were becoming safer as the numbers drop but it appears I could well be wrong. For anyone who doesn’t know they are both medics.
You bet I’m cross about these selfish people who care not one jot for any of us.

growstuff Sat 06-Jun-20 21:24:57

How does "knee bending" spread Covid-19?

Willow Are you saying that you object to protests, whether they're about kneeling or marching? I would have thought the two are different.

growstuff Sat 06-Jun-20 21:22:06

I think it's possible Oopsminty when people talk about "something which happened in America".

growstuff Sat 06-Jun-20 21:21:11

The French didn't stop a Black Lives Matter protest in Paris. news.sky.com/story/paris-black-lives-matter-protesters-who-protects-us-from-the-police-11999520

Oopsminty Sat 06-Jun-20 21:17:54

Does anyone think that, growstuff ?

growstuff Sat 06-Jun-20 21:16:15

Anybody who thinks racism is confined to America is fooling themself.

Oopsminty Sat 06-Jun-20 21:07:46

Oopsminty They have resigned from that particular Team but are still working as police officers and on full pay

I know , Jaycee5

Maybe I should have clarified but I assumed people would read the link

Nightsky2 Sat 06-Jun-20 21:07:45

Merlotgran. I certainly am and with very good reason.

Jaycee5 Sat 06-Jun-20 21:03:53

Oopsminty They have resigned from that particular Team but are still working as police officers and on full pay.

Suziewoozie and paddyanne I totally agree about All Lives Matter. People must realise how dismissive that is and it is hard to believe that at least a large proportion of the people who insist on using that phrase whenever BLM is mentioned do it unknowingly.
Why can't people either get on board an issue or decide that it isn't for them. Why do they have to try to undermine it when it is about people trying to have their fears and concerns listened to and dealt with.
This protest has been a long time coming. It is a peaceful protest although large protests always have agitators (they have been caught in the US protest) and people who see it as an opportunity. Those complaining about it have probably complained about Kampernick taking a knee. That was 4, nearly 5, years ago and could not have been a more peaceful protest but no one listened when those methods are tried. How long can people be expected to just accept oppression?

merlotgran Sat 06-Jun-20 20:39:35

Our police force cannot be seen to be racist so will turn a bling eye like they did in London today, shame on them.

I presume you mean a blind eye.

Casting shame on members our police force who are doing the best they can in challenging circumstances is shameful in itself. angry
