Please take a moment to watch this, it's one of the most uplifting things you'll see I'm sure. This lovely young man is using his position as a footballer to speak out on child poverty and asking the government to reinstate food vouchers for children so they don't go hungry this summer. His mother must be so proud of her boy!

@grannyactivist. I am sorry but I do not agree. It is not the governments duty to feed children. Too many people have children they cannot afford then have more.

Rosina Tue 16-Jun-20 10:03:12

The government is emphatically not taking food from the poorest. This again is inflammatory talk and is completely wrong. There never have been 'vouchers' to my knowledge and I administered the scheme in a school for almost twenty years. Parents on benefit could apply to the LEA for free meals, and if they were granted this was known only to the person administering the meals. Nobody other than the parents knew, and no other pupils would be aware. Marcus Rashford sounds like a wonderful youg man - he is to be admired for this proposal, but let it be clear that this is a new initiative - and it will cost the taxpayer more so therefore it has to be discussed in Parliament. It is not an argument against taking away - it is a proposal for more giving, and we can all applaud that, but as we all know there is no such thing as a free lunch. Someone is paying, and there needs to be discussion.

My daughter is a headteacher in South London. Most of her children rely on free school meals and the free breakfasts. Her school have been giving enough food for pack lunches every week during lockdown. Émilie is worried sick about all these poor families during the summer holidays if they are not helped. She cares deeply about all her children and is trying to find alternative help

What an inspiring young man, brought me to tears reading his letter, God bless him.

Best not to try to ‘read between the lines’ Furret your wrong

Furret Tue 16-Jun-20 09:45:52

‘ Indeed, Furret. I could feel the hand of white protestant morality hovering over the keyboard’

Beautifully put.

Furret Tue 16-Jun-20 09:44:47

Maisie at least we can agree on this one!

MaizieD Tue 16-Jun-20 09:43:21

Reading between the lines that’s what this implies ...

Indeed, Furret. I could feel the hand of white protestant morality hovering over the keyboard...

Lovely sentiments, Rosalyn69 but unfortunately people keep voting for the party which doesn't really care at all about hunger and homelessness.

missymazda Tue 16-Jun-20 09:40:44

Well said,I’d rather my taxes ended up in the hands of a few undeserving than let the many go without the basics of life.

Rosalyn69 Tue 16-Jun-20 09:39:31

No child should go hungry.
No one should be homeless.

Furret Tue 16-Jun-20 09:24:43

MaisieD if she is widowed she will gain more sympathy, understanding and respect than has her husband left her as a single mother.

Reading between the lines that’s what this implies ...

Lucca Tue 16-Jun-20 09:22:25

Maizie. Agree.
Also fail to see the need to let children starve because their parents may have made mistakes or had bad luck

Lucca Tue 16-Jun-20 09:20:51

This is all I could find

Parents:
Father: Robert Rashford
Mother: Melanie Rashford
Siblings:
Brothers: Dane Rashford, Dwaine Maynard
Sisters: Chantelle Rashford, Claire Rashford

MaizieD Tue 16-Jun-20 09:18:49

Absolutely failing to see the significance of his mother's marital status.

What is more important is that she has clearly given him a good grounding in how to be a lovely caring and unselfish individual.

Lucca Tue 16-Jun-20 09:18:04

Please can somebody find a reliable source which tells us (not that it is really relevant to the good work he is doing ) if his mother was single widowed married etc I’ll look now....

Anniebach Tue 16-Jun-20 09:13:15

She had five children and if widowed would have had a husband when she had the children ,

Furret Tue 16-Jun-20 09:11:41

quizqueen

I would prefer that this footballer campaigned for people to not have children they cannot afford to feed and for men to start taking responsibility for the children they father and for women to make better choices in the men they allow to impregnate them.

It is not the state's responsibility to feed children.People need to take individual responsibility for themselves, their actions and their families. Too many people think it doesn't matter if a relationship fails or they don't have to work because they can just claim benefits.

The situation is what it is.

Quizqueen Rather than deny poor children food and denigrate single mothers like Marcus Rashford’s, who do their best under difficult circumstances, try to understand that by supporting such families we can change society.

Lucca Tue 16-Jun-20 09:05:19

Anniebach. I don’t think so, but why ?

Anniebach Tue 16-Jun-20 08:59:17

Was his mother a widow?

growstuff Tue 16-Jun-20 08:56:01

Professor Brian Cox is keeping a tally of the trolls on his Twitter feed who claim that Rashford is wrong because people should have fewer children and the government isn't responsible for feeding them. It must be a "thing".

I wonder how many children actually live in big families. The statistics show that there are actually not that many families with more than three children.

quizqueen obviously hasn't heard that thousands of people, many of whom have never been unemployed in their lives, have lost their jobs in the current pandemic. Many of the children eligible for free school meals are in two parent households.

But - hey - let nothing get in the way of a good narrow-minded, bigoted rant!

growstuff Tue 16-Jun-20 08:48:42

Marcus Rashford had absolutely no control over how many children his mother had nor whether his father was around to support the children.

What he has done is work hard to achieve what he has and and to help others.

A shining example of what "taking back control" should be all about.

Nannee49 Tue 16-Jun-20 08:38:02

I wish we all lived in your sunlit uplands world qq where there's clearly nothing to disrupt the status quo of lucky tranquillity...no adverse events, no cruel twists of fate, no need of a helping hand from compassionate strangers.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 16-Jun-20 08:29:43

9 out of 30 children in any classroom are in poverty and hungry.

Iam64 Tue 16-Jun-20 08:28:21

quiz queen - you take the biscuit.
If his mum hadn't had children, the world would be a poorer place because we wouldn't have Marcus Rashford in it.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 16-Jun-20 08:26:29

Marcus Rashford
@MarcusRashford
1. When you wake up this morning and run your shower, take a second to think about parents who have had their water turned off during lockdown.”

My god is that even legal given the virus etc!!?
