Brexit Re-booted

Germany has said that the U.K. has made such little progress in the negotiations that it isn’t bothering to to discuss brexit at a planned diplomatic meeting.

We are heading for a no deal and just watch Johnson try to pin it on Brussels, as the full realisation of a no deal hits home after December.

So the so-called negotiations have been a sham.

The Brexiters still insist that we must have all the benefits of EU membership, but without paying the membership fee or abiding by the rules.

Negotiation doesn't work like that, especially when those on the other side of the table have the stronger hand.

Varian Yes. Those who pull the strings were opposed to the changes to tax regulations brought in by the EU in January. From what I recall the EU were going after the international corporations and those offshore. The proprietors of the right wing msm and JRM for example.

So why did Johnson do a Deal, worse than Mrs May's- present it to the House, got it passed and signed it then? What was that all about if not totally dishonest?

“That is clearly not the case now. The EU needs to realise that we are not up for continuing previous arrangements: when they understand that, it will be much easier to make progress.”

In other words, Mr Johnson’s team really do believe that “Brexit means Brexit”, and intend to deliver it, deal or no deal.”

Given that the army seem to be on standby I assume some people in government realise what it’s going to be like. No deal brexit, pandemic and probably floods as well this winter. Just what it said on the bus.

Has ANYBODY in government really understood the chaos, the shambles that is going happen at British ports if there is a no deal Brexit? Staff: not recruited. Border posts: not built. Lorry parks: not enough and not completed. Paperwork: not printed, not issued, nobody trained.

Quite interested in what sort of brexit you would like

The reality in Ireland is going to be the best of both worlds north and south. Ulster will effectively be in the EU, Eire will take any advantages the north offers, much as they do now and I guess that will suit them both.

I have quietened down about Brexit. Not because I’m dreading it or think I voted wrongly.

I’m just quietly happy it’s actually happening and I don’t want to come over as crowing. I’m not jingoistic.

Besides which all the to-ing and fro-ing about the subject can get a tad repetitive!

I have just been reading the results of a survey on the EU carried out during 2018 by the Pew Research Center, a Washington based, non partisan think tank. The survey covers a wide range of topics, including the role of the UK, France and Germany in the EU, the economy, immigration, refugees etc.

The median rating of favourable views for the EU was 62% whereas it was lower for the Commission and the EU Parliament. (48% for the Commission and 50% for the Parliament). I don't think that the ratings for the governance of the EU would be a surprise to anyone but the popularity of the EU itself suggests to me that the people hoped that improvements could be made.

It is a sadness to me that the people of the UK could not see that we could have helped in making the necessary changes. I don't think that they realised how important to the EU we once were, albeit many years ago, and the opportunities that have been wasted.

Yes - three years ago how many on here were crowing that all the other countries were envious of us? ( just because they once spoke to a taxi driver in Rome or somewhere) That jibe seems to have quietened down. I don’t think any countries in the EU are envious of us and our small island mentality.
