A new law proposed by a lawmaker in California is aimed at stopping people from making racially motivated calls to the police.

It's been proposed by San Francisco Supervisor Shamann Walton, and is called the 'CAREN' act, which stands for Caution Against Racially Exploitative Non-Emergencies.

Recently there has been a large uptick in incidents during which white women call the police to make reports against people of colour who they claim have made them feel uncomfortable while they're going about their daily business.

These people have become known colloquially as 'Karens'.

Calls to police can put the subject of those frivolous 911 contacts in danger of arrest for a crime they haven't committed, or an interaction with the police that could otherwise have been avoided.

Just recently, Amy Cooper called the police on a man who was birdwatching in a New York park because he'd asked her if she could put her dog onto a leash.

Then, closer to where the law is being proposed, Jennifer Schulte called the police when she saw two black men having a barbecue in a park.

A woman also threatened to call the cops on a man for stenciling 'Black Lives Matter' in chalk on his own house.

This new law aims to punish those who think they can use the police to intimidate people of colour who have done nothing wrong.

Walton argues that the proposed measures 'are part of a larger nationwide movement to address racial biases and implement consequences for weaponizing emergency resources with racist intentions'.

It's similar to a bill put forward by California State Assembly member Rob Bonta that calls for people who use law enforcement in a way that is biased towards people for their race, class, appearance, or religion.

Speaking about that piece of legislation, Bonta said: "This bill could protect millions of Californians from becoming targets of hate and prevent the weaponization of our law enforcement against communities of colour."

Let's hope that it makes a difference.

Lol Galaxy, definitely agree on that

I've git no problem with disagreeing, I've learnt a lot in the last few days which I appreciate.

I don't, never have and never will think Karen is an OK term though and that's the truth.

This morning I only suggested that CAREN would be a better association than KAREN and perhaps make a negative into a positive going forward

Galaxy Sun 12-Jul-20 13:55:32

No some of us are disagreeing with you thats all. I don't think that because someone has a different opinion to me they are bad.
Well unless they like Mrs Browns Boys.

Chewbacca Sun 12-Jul-20 13:52:04

Me too Galaxy, me too.

Starblaze Sun 12-Jul-20 13:41:19

Now the focus seems to be on

Starblaze = bad

As if I as a woman and my thoughts are not allowed the validity of other women that everyone is so determined must be protected even if those thoughts/deeds are racist, a waste of police time, untrue or discriminatory in some way.

Also I might be a man as justification for doing so (I'm not)

lol

Galaxy Sun 12-Jul-20 13:36:48

I can manage to focus on both.

Starblaze Sun 12-Jul-20 13:34:38

My post yesterday, before i did my best to understand and educate myself on it Chewbacca?

I have already clarified my position

Karen = Bad

Focusing on Karen to the detriment of other issues = Bad

Seperate issues

You could of course read back through all my comments to see that has been my thinking all along

GrannyGravy13

Can I ask what is the defining hairstyle please, I have an appointment at the hairdressers on Tuesday and would like to avoid being labelled yet again (I am blonde and currently live in Essex not sure I can take anymore judgemental names)

gringrin
What is that wonderful Dolly Parton quote about being a “dumb blonde” ?
Namely that she is NOT dumb (and not blonde) !

Chewbacca Sun 12-Jul-20 13:26:46

Starblaze

What are the origins of this Karen thing Chewbacca?

Because I did look into it and it appears to come from white people caragorising a "type of person" who likes to complain to the management.

Its been around for a while apparently.

Now it has been attached to racism, its suddenly a massive problem

White people do this a lot huh?

Your post yesterday appears to contradict what you've said today though. And I'm still perplexed by what White people do this a lot huh? means. What do "white people^ do a lot of?

Madgran77 Sun 12-Jul-20 13:26:24

I have now read the whole thread...with interest.

I think it is pointless and completely wrong to put a label on any particular group and describe them as one group and then even imply that they will have similar characteristics! As a group they may have certain characteristics such as "white" but even that covers members of so many different countries.; so many different experiences to shape their views. Even "middle aged" is a moveable feast, when does it start, when does it end? Hairstyles ...so apparently having a certain hairstyle tells people what your views are, your characteristics!!?? How silly can it get?

That lists suggests if the three "characteristics" I mention above apply to you then you are bound to also be "entitled" and "demanding". How daft is that, why should the rest determine that you will be those things also?

Surely the fight for equal rights and opportunities and feminism can be done without labelling of anyone or any group??

Starblaze Sun 12-Jul-20 13:23:14

To be fair, I don't personally like that hair cut and if someone came to me with it and asked if it looked good, I would of course be polite but I'd probably have to sue my face for slander.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 12-Jul-20 13:22:22

Oopsminty

Here you go, GrannyGravy13!

Thank you, that style was not on my options list

Chewbacca Sun 12-Jul-20 13:21:34

No idea Grannygravy But the odds are that no matter which style you choose, you'll be labelled as something or other simply because of your gender, age and ethnicity.

Oopsminty Sun 12-Jul-20 13:19:58

Here you go, GrannyGravy13!

Starblaze Sun 12-Jul-20 13:18:10

Callistimon this is one of those situations where I am unsure if I am making myself clear enough or being deliberately misunderstood in order to fuel some sort of argument.

I do not believe using the name Karen to describe certain behaviour is acceptable

I also do not believe the behaviour of people who believe they are jutified to racially profile or otherwise profile people they see as less than themselves is acceptable either.

Those viewpoints do not negate each other.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 12-Jul-20 13:16:24

Can I ask what is the defining hairstyle please, I have an appointment at the hairdressers on Tuesday and would like to avoid being labelled yet again (I am blonde and currently live in Essex not sure I can take anymore judgemental names)

Galaxy Sun 12-Jul-20 13:15:50

It's hardly ever a mams name, it's always a womans.

Callistemon Sun 12-Jul-20 13:13:43

equal rights or opportunities for everyone
Including all the Karens of the world ?

These women
and which women would they be, exactly?
Anyone called Karen?

As I said previously, this extremely stupid idea of using a woman's (and in some cultures a man's) name to typify a group of women with a racist, histrionic personality disorder is not only very wrong, it detracts from the serious issues at stake.

lemongrove Sun 12-Jul-20 12:54:32

From the definition given about ‘Karens’ it seems they (middle aged to older white women)are being talked about in a way that for any other group you could mention would be considered outrageous.

Starblaze Sun 12-Jul-20 12:53:10

That's what I am saying though Cheebacca it's far from all women.

It's not mysogyny to say I don't like the behaviour of some women

It's not misandry to say I don't like the behaviour of some men

It is feminism to say that I believe in equal rights and opportunities for everyone.

These women we are speaking of do not believe in equal rights or oportunity as they clearly demonstrate

lemongrove Sun 12-Jul-20 12:50:22

Are you a man Starblaze ?

Chewbacca Sun 12-Jul-20 12:45:35

I can see there is a problem with a certain type of women. There certainly is Starblaze! But the problem with lumping white, middle aged women, who display less than attractive traits, into one huge homogeneous mass and then labelling them "Karen", is divisive, misogynistic, sexist, unfair and counter productive.

Starblaze Sun 12-Jul-20 12:31:13

I can see there is a problem with a certain type of women Cheebacca who believes they are deserving of special treatment and that they are generally more important than others. They believe they should be listened to above others and their opinion is the be all and end all on every conversation. They also seem to believe they are above telling the truth or any kind of morals to get their own way.

Calling them Karen's is not OK but that sort of woman lets the rest of us down and that sort of behaviour should be called out clearly.

Chewbacca Sun 12-Jul-20 12:23:23

So of the 6 so called characteristics, you've picked up on 2 negative stereotypes? hmm
I believe that there are as many "entitled or demanding" women as there are "entitled or demanding" men, Starblaze. Some of them are white. Some of them have their hair cut in a particular style. And some of them are called Karen. Or Susan. Or Bill.
But to selectively identify a whole demographic of white femails, of a particular age, is misogynistic, offensive and lazy. And I find it depressingly sad that another middle aged woman cannot see that.

Starblaze Sun 12-Jul-20 12:12:32

Not if you aren't entitled or demanding, or do you believe most women are Chewbacca?

Chewbacca Sun 12-Jul-20 12:09:55

Well, the criteria for "being a Karen" is fairly extensive, according to the direct quote:

White
Femail
Entitled
Demanding
Middle aged
Having a "particular hairstyle"

That's fairly generic, wouldn't you say?
