“Speaking ahead of the visit, Mr Johnson said: 'When I stood on the steps of Downing Street one year ago, I pledged to be a Prime Minister for every corner of the United Kingdom.

'Whether you are from East Kilbride or Dumfries, Motherwell or Paisley, I promised to level up across Britain and close the opportunity gap.

'The last six months have shown exactly why the historic and heartfelt bond that ties the four nations of our country together is so important and the sheer might of our union has been proven once again.'”

Will his visit be a success or is the SNP too close now to going it alone?

Do they mcem? What high moral ground is that I wonder?

I was wondering that, too.

Borisovich's supporters have no moral high ground to take.

Oooooh! Just a tad touchy and defensive?

I don’t think a whistle stop photo op to Orkney is “visiting Scotland” .

What is it called then? It’s not visiting Patagonia is it?

lemongrove Fri 24-Jul-20 08:41:08

Actually, I don’t think David Cameron was popular in Scotland either, when was the last English Conservative PM ever popular there?

Quite apart from the independence issue he has 'earned' his dislike through lying, prevaricating, blustering, arrogance etc etc etc.
What I find distasteful and unacceptable is that his dyed-in-the-wool supporters do accept such low standards while taking the high moral ground!

urmstongran Orkney isn’t in the Outer Hebrides.

Because it’s the SNP supporters who shout loudest, it often seems that all all Scots support wee Nichola.....but they don’t!
As Jane10 says don’t forget the silent majority who would rather stay linked to the UK.I can’t see Johnson allowing another referendum any time soon in any case.

lemongrove Fri 24-Jul-20 08:24:01

QuizQueen.....he’s English! A crime in itself for some it would seem.?

mcem Fri 24-Jul-20 08:12:20

"The man can't do anything right in some people's eyes".
At last, QQ, you've seen the light!

Urmstongran Fri 24-Jul-20 08:06:07

Didn’t Boris go up to Orkney as £50 million was going to the Outer Hebrides as part of the ‘levelling up’ process?

quizqueen Fri 24-Jul-20 08:03:15

Boris doesn't visit Northern flooding areas, he's in trouble. Boris visits Scotland, he's in trouble. The man can't do anything right in some people's eyes. I read that Scotland have been given extra money to help with cv-19. Why? They have their own budget already and not that many cases in comparison with England.

In answer to anther poster, Scotland have more MPs proportional to size/population than England so boundary changes are needed all round; in England too. The majority of the people of Scotland have never seemed to like the English throughout history so it's time for them to go, I think. What divorce settlement are you offering as it seems to be the Leavers who have to foot the bill for everything like in Brexit terms!

I think the point to the visit was that he could make a bumbling speech about the union surrounded by security and a few nodding dogs, a group waving Saltires and EU flags kept well away. He held a crab and visited an RAF base. That’s it - back to London for tea. He can now say he’s “visited Scotland”.

Yes please do.

So Johnson flew to Orkney for a couple of photo ops in a remote area and then flew home in time for tea - and that’s a “visit to Scotland”? Why not Glasgow or Edinburgh where a lot of Scottish people actually live? I think we know why. This visit definitely a vote winner - for the SNP.

Is that all he did ? Why ? Was there a point to the visit ?

You certainly can’t rely on polls, notoriously unreliable.

Jane10 Thu 23-Jul-20 22:29:37

BTW Granny23 your info re the EU is either out of date or wishful thinking.

Jane10 Thu 23-Jul-20 22:27:29

Don't worry mcem the silent majority is far higher than that. Polls are very limited instruments of public voting intention.

mcem Thu 23-Jul-20 21:04:06

I like the reference to the silent majority of less than 44%!
I'll settle for that!

Meanwhile, the so-called negotiators, taking their orders from the disaster capitalists, are actually heading for a disastrous no-deal brexit.

varian Thu 23-Jul-20 20:48:30

I do not believe that there has ever been any intention on behalf of the UK government to negotiate honestly. The so-called negotiators just keep demanding all the benefits of EU membership after we have left.

Of course that was what was promisised by the Leave liars and sadly far too many guillible voters believed we could have a "cake and eat it" brexit.

vegansrock Thu 23-Jul-20 20:36:39

The EU have been constant in their position - it’s the U.K. which keeps chopping and changing.
