post-Brexit - should France still be helping to stop the influx to the UK?
What do you think?

More right wing distraction from the rising number of Covid cases. Why do we always fall for their smoke and mirrors?

Urmstongran Thu 13-Aug-20 08:04:39

Things are rarely what they seem. U.K. = bad EU = best.

Apparently the EU is building ‘Fortress Europe’’. Dublin is brutally enforced despite massive overcrowding in Greek and Italian camps. Leaders have called for offshore asylum processing centres to be set up, which, if established, would mean the EU having a more “Australian” migration policy than Britain.

As recently as March, thousands of refugees and migrants were violently repelled by border guards as they tried to enter Greece. Despite deaths during the clashes, the Greeks were praised as Europe’s “shield” by the president of the European Commission, as she toured the land-border with Turkey.

Assylum is a place of safety, many migrants begin as Assylum seekers for whatever reason, they can do this in their first neutral country.

Indeed, they 'can', David but there is nothing in international law that says they have to. Nor is there anything that says they have to return to their country of origin if it is safe to do so. They have as much right to choose what they want to do as you do.

MaizieD Thu 13-Aug-20 08:12:28

I agree, GagaJo. This is a dead cat...

“ They have as much right to choose what they want to do as you do.“

No they don’t Maisie, I might want to go and live in the US or Germany, but I can’t because there are strict rules that stop me

Interesting article in today's Times about this very subject." A few thousand boat people isn't a crisis."
It is well worth looking at . He does remind us that the number of people who seek asylum in Britain is just over a quarter of those who do in Germany and a third of those in France.
However as other posters have said it is a dead cat, as have been other statements put out by the P.M. and his cabinet to take the general public's eye off the questions which cause trouble for the government. I have listed these in other posts.

westendgirl Thu 13-Aug-20 10:03:24

Sorry should have said that the article is by David Aaronovitch

silverlining48 Thu 13-Aug-20 10:45:47

David I don’t know about USA but you could easily have gone to live in Germany or anywhere else in the EU for the past 40 odd years, but because of Brexit you have missed the boat.

EllanVannin Thu 13-Aug-20 10:54:58

Under the Geneva Convention these refugees are under no obligation to settle in the nearest country, instead they can settle in a country that makes them feel more comfortable in and one that speaks a language that they understand-----which is why they settle for the UK.
It's not all about benefits, houses and taking jobs off others.

MadeInYorkshire Thu 13-Aug-20 11:19:44

We could all donate to this maybe?

The UK currently accommodates at most 44,000 asylum seekers in total.‬
‪That figure accounts for just 0.06% of the UK population.‬
‪Asylum seekers are entitled to an allowance of £37.75 a week to live on.‬
‪In total, this allowance for every single asylum seeker in the entire country comes to, at most, £1.6m a week, or £86m every year.‬
‪However, in comparison, just this week it was revealed that the government wasted almost double that amount after handing a £252m contract to a company owned by one of Liz Truss’s own advisors to source PPE and they ended up chucking £150m of it down the drain by buying useless masks. This is just one example in a truly monstrous list of wasted taxpayers’ money on Boris Johnson’s watch.‬
‪If you’re angry because you think this country can’t afford asylum seekers, you should be 100 times more angry at the astonishing waste caused by this incompetent and deeply corrupt government. ‬

This is interesting ....

I'd love to see the sum total of " waste " in this country.

Made in Yorkshire, very well said. I don't know how many posters will accept or even read that. I have posted several times about how the Govt put out messages , usually at the weekend as a distraction whenever things are looking troublesome .There's very little reaction. !people seem to be taken in by the smoke and mirrors or the dead cat .

Indeed!! Thank you ....

It's like the DWP always post out letters on a Friday to arrive at the weekend! That is so that by Monday you will have calmed down before calling them!! wink

actually i think you are wrong .once we cut off from europe. we are going to have a points system like australia and immigrants will be taken back to france. if they were real refugees they would seek sanctuary in the first country they come to.the coastal/navy needs to transport them back to france. britain cant cope with anymore .we are a soft touch country .already we are stretched for housing/schools/etc...

silverlining48 Thu 13-Aug-20 12:00:50

Made in Yorkshire thanks for including the care4calais link.

Iam64 Thu 13-Aug-20 12:31:54

MadeinYorkshire, many thanks for your post.
I'd never heard the 'dead cat' thing but this thread makes me think I understand it. Right below Yorkshire's post is yet another ill informed post that "real refugees" not coming to the Uk because hey, they get to France first so our Navy should be used to take them back there.
Dead Cat indeed

Can't begin to say how very wrong you are, moggie

Once we are 'cut off from Europe', as you so charmingly put it, we will not be able to take anyone back to anywhere. The EU agreement by which we can return people to France lapses on 1/1/21.

Refugees are not obliged to 'seek sanctuary' in the first country they come to.

The navy can't take anyone 'back to France' unless the French give them permission to enter their national waters (i.e midway across the English Channel, which just happens to be half French)

We are stretched for housing, schools etc etc because of political decisions taken by tory governments over the last 10 years on the grounds of 'cutting state spending'. Because the tories HATE state spending. There's no actual reason why we shouldn't spend money on theses things.

If you think that £37.75 per week to live on is 'soft touch' I suggest that you try it some time. Preferably with no comfortable home to enjoy it in...

biba70 Thu 13-Aug-20 12:51:14

Talks by Priti Patel of the Navy getting involved, and the utterly irresponsible and stupid comments by

''Long-standing Tory Brexiteer MP Edward Leigh made the claim on Twitter, suggesting that the English and French return to the border arrangements of the late 16th century.

Calais was under English rule for 200 years until it was lost to France in 1558 under Mary I.

He tweeted: “Problem with cross-Channel migrants? We should never have lost Calais in 1588. Why not take it back?”

Leigh followed it up by writing: “On second thoughts, cheaper to pay the French a few million to stop (the migrants) on the beaches.”

are truly inflamming the situation with the French and the EU. The Mayor of Calais has called the above a 'declaration of war'. The French may well refuse any amount of money and just refuse to continue to check the coast and say 'you wanted to control your borders - than do it and leave us out of it'. and fair enough- the Continental Press are unanimous on this.

Actually if I had a choice it would be rural France but I guess I’m too old now and there are going to be all sorts of restrictions after December.

Sorry to disagree Ellan but a refugee interviewed on TV yesterday actually said that he wanted to come to Britain for a house and benefits because the French won't give him anything.

Davidhs Thu 13-Aug-20 13:36:18

Regardless of any Geneva Convention rules most countries accept refugees from neighboring countries and do their best to help them, as far as I know no country has an open door, in fact most have strict entry requirements.

So claiming Assylum is no sure way of migration, only for humanitarian reasons they are not sent back to a war zone. In my opinion they should be sent back to a safe country close to their origin

AND

The UK should pay for their maintenance there
The EU and UK already pay Turkey and others to restrict migrants

silverlining48 Thu 13-Aug-20 13:39:25

David you mentioned Germany, but your opportunity of going to France if you prefer that, is no longer an option either, though if it were, you are never too old .... we certainly thought about it.
Too late too late. Doors are closed.

biba70 Thu 13-Aug-20 14:10:32

Not yet- nothing stopping you from moving to France now and get into the system on time. Doors still very much openened.

lemongrove Thu 13-Aug-20 14:19:44

It’s not a ‘dead cat’ at all, just something that has been taking place a lot recently due to the calm channel crossing, so is obviously in the news all the time.Even when calm, crossing in dinghies etc which are overcrowded and contain children and babies as well as the adults is shocking in itself, given what could happen. To do that, when you could stay in France and apply for asylum and French citizenship seems crazy.
However, for whatever reasons they do it, the migrants continue to come here, and like all countries we have to deal with this problem of illegal migration.Whether we pay the French to better police the beaches or we do things all by ourselves.
