Won’t do a virtual debate - should be empty chaired. Good news

I agree, it seems like the rioters were allowed in. The contrast between the treatment of other protestors is stark. It also seems incredible that Republican senators are still behind Trump. It's hard to credit what we are seeing played out.

One thing that I find very hard to explain is the difference in the policing between a mob who caused insurrection and death, with guns and pipe bombs and the BLM protesters in the summer.

If I didn’t hope differently I would say that there was a degree of complicity.

-Prime Minister, who despite his faults does have UK at his hear-
Boris only has Boris at heart, he chose the path he took because it was the only way he could become PM.

People are very interested in American politics because the UK is attached to it now more than the EU. If America sneezes we also catch the cold. In the 60s it was thought jokingly that we would became ‘a state’.

Nezumi65 Thu 07-Jan-21 07:39:35

Johnson had nothing in his heart except his own self interest. He was only part of vote leave because he thought it wouldn’t win & would get him closer to being PM.

Many of the people involved in the Trump campaign were also involved in vote leave. There are close links between the two.

If you can’t see parallels between the populist movements of Trump & Brexit you are shutting your eyes & putting your hands over you ears.

Thinking about what has happened overnight the Republican Party seems to be a political party in attrition, whose supporters who are almost exclusively white, evangelical and in the main working class are seeing their country change both culturally and demographically.

Rather than embrace change they seem intent on division and hate.

It can’t continue.

I think it is a lesson we must take on board in the U.K. because we see shadows of so much here with the division and hate. A narcissistic leader who has shown a willingness to lie beyond acceptability and a government who has been willing to break the rule of law to suit its purpose.

Why this obsession with American Politics and Trump. They asked for him and got him.
America does the mention Britain, except rarely, on any of their news channels. That country is so big and diverse they have enough to concern the selves with, mainly Trump.
As for those that compare Boris with Hitler, that's a slanderous remark, an extremely muddled analysis of our Prime Minister, who despite his faults does have UK at his heart. Europe would have been, sorted ages ago if the people that didn't recognise a democratic vote opposed it,and cost us millions, and EU tried to make an example of us to the rest of the EU of what will up happen if you dare to leave.
As for Corona I would prefer to listen to scientific advice than Joe Bloggs. No country has got it right as its a Pandemic not some summer chill you can shake off.

Prior to Trumps speech at his so called rally his son Don Jr. riled up the crowd screaming about voter fraud. Trump said to the crowd that they would walk to the capitol and thank the senators and cobgrsss people. Yet the coward ran to shelter at the WH. This is terrorism not protests. I could not believe the horror I saw. And the police didn’t think this was going to happen ?

It is being suggested that are lots of calls for the 25th amendment to be invoked including from some White House staff and even some of Trump’s cabinet. Apparently it was impossible for anybody to talk to him yesterday, all he wanted to do was watch what was happenin on tv.

I find this fascinating. In his speech where he riled everybody up, he said he would be walking with them. I wonder when he ducked out

This says a lot

DH and I sat watching what was going on and were both appalled and angry. It has affected me so much I am having trouble sleeping so have been looking at some of the latest news. Apparently it was Mike Pence who called in The National Guard, Trump had no part in it, he just watched things happening on tv in The White House. Did anybody notice that Mike Pence wore a blue tie? I was quite surprised. The person who spoke about Pence having called in The National Guard was The White House National Security Adviser, he was only recently appointed by Trump and was complimentary about Pence and very scathing about Trump.

It’s been planned for some time by groups on social media called stop the steal

Trumps Twitter account has been locked and 3 tweets have been deleted. It’s like a naughty child having his toys taken away sad.

Ina way it doesn’t matter if they misguidedly supported Trump and populist politics, as long as they understand where such support takes us and they have changed their minds.

Hmm, I wouldn't bank on it Whitewavemark2!

Yes I just heard. Inside the Senate I think.

I am thankful that most of the mob did not seem to be carrying firearms.

I have not read all this thread, but I assume that people have clocked that the woman who was shot has died.

What a frightening mess this all is.

There are sayings, trite but true, that come to mind.

For evil to triumph, it is enough that good men do nothing.

The price of freedom is eternal vigilence.

That is so true.

Sounds as if the politicians intend to resume and go through the night.

Good.

It's just so incredible. How can one man have brought about this situation? How has someone so delusional but thick got so far?
His personality would give psychiatrists something to study for decades.

It's easy, Jane10. We've got one equally delusional but not quite so thick.

Just make everyone think you're a good laugh, or very good at something that isn't politics. Give them a nice easy slogan to chant and never, never, never admit you're wrong.

Democracy is so fragile. We haven’t got the proud boys on the streets, but we do have them in parliament undermining the rule of law and parliamentary sovereignty.

Elegran Wed 06-Jan-21 22:49:43

Whenever someone compared Trump to Hitler, there was always a chorus of "bringing in Naziism is the last resort when the debate is being lost"

Nuremberg?

A black American tweeted alongside a photo of a white mobster sitting on the leaders seat in the senate.

“ To have got this far without being shot and killed is the epitome of white privilege”
