Every now and then we seem to get a new poster on GN who attempts to defend our rotten government.

Are Conservative Central Office members of GN, perhaps under another alias?

If they don't want to be criticised, they could always do things in a way that is acceptable legally and morally.

So you are OK, Kamiso, with the lawmakers breaking the laws, the signers of international agreements reneging on them, our elected representatives and the leaders of our country and their advisors of lying to us and granting contracts to their friends without inviting tenders from anyone else?

Dominic and Boris love you, I am sure. You would let them do anything at all without protest or even comment. How do you think the dictators of banana republics get into power and stay there?

totally out of order kamiso- and worse, totally out of touch with the reality of the impending chaos.

With comments like the one from Kamiso, it is no wonder that the Government thinks it can get away with doing anything that suits it, even at the expense of our country's reputation.

Kamiso

oh Lord! Still carping and bleating. Don’t you get bored with yourselves?

I do get bored with folk who seem to have no moral compass, and seemingly understand nothing.

We get very bored with folks, who don't understand the fundamental principles which govern our society and our relationships with other countries, coming onto threads to make stupid comments...

Several of those elected representatives, some at a very high level of responsibility, have already proved that they don't consider that THEY have to keep to the rules they made for the rest of us in an attempt to control the spread of disease.

Elegran Wed 21-Oct-20 14:30:54

Never mind the EU or anyone else. If you - if WE - sign an agreement we should keep to it. Mortgage payments? If you stop paying those without discussing it with the lender, you find your house is no longer yours. Marriage certificate? If you decide to marry someone else, you have to get divorcedfirst and cancel the original marriage.

If we - or our elected government acting in our name - show that they can't keep the agreements or laws that it made itself, why should any other country trust us to keep any international agreements or trade deals that we - or our elected government acting in our name - put their - signatures to?

Thank goodness the large majority of the House of Lords has a far better understanding of the fundamental importance of the Rule of Law than do a great many of the supporters of our appalling populist government.

Totally agree with you quizqueen! Not much point stating that view on here though, you'll only be sneered and jeered at, so best to keep out of it!

Or as some would say, you’ll be disagreed with

perhaps you could list the EU laws you think the uk had to obey? Remember when you do that our ELECTED representatives voted for them!

NotSpaghetti Wed 21-Oct-20 11:36:16

quizqueen, I don't see this as "them" and "us" as you seem to.
I see this as honouring promises which we have only just made!

It's bonkers to suggest this is a tit-for-tat thing!

quizqueen Wed 21-Oct-20 11:21:07

As usual, they vote to let a foreign enterprise walk all over us, rather than supporting their own country. Perhaps you could list some of the international laws the EU obeys.

Good to see opposition.

"The government saw the biggest defeat in the House of Lords for over 20 years today, as peers from across the house rejected Boris Johnson's plan to break international law and pave the way for a no-deal Brexit.

395 lords to 169 see how they voted voted to condemn the Internal Market Bill, saying that it “would undermine the rule of law and damage the reputation of the United Kingdom”. Thank you to everyone who used our tool to lobby a lord ahead of this key vote.

This is a hopeful sign – but it's not over yet. Their vote today doesn't stop the bill in its tracks – but it shows that it has no chance of getting through the House of Lords without heavy amendments.

It is still worth writing to a lord if you haven't already: Lobby a lord
(If you don't mind which lord, this tool will send it to one at random. If you wish to write to a specific lord, choose one from the list at the link to how they voted)

What happens now? If the House of Lords insists on amendments - as looks likely – then the bill will be sent back to the House of Commons to vote on those amendments. If we assume the Tory majority in the Commons will reject them, then there is a stalemate.

At that point, the House of Lords could take the big step of refusing to roll over, and blocking the bill. It is very rare that this happens - but it is also very rare for such a huge majority in the Lords to be opposed to a government bill, and unprecedented for the government to be trying to pass a bill that rides roughshod over the rule of law.

That is why it is important to keep making your views known to the Lords, and sharing the lobby-a-lord tool with other people too: Write to a lord now
