According to the Guardian on line 1.08pm

A spokesman for the Labour Party said today "In light of comments made today and his failure to retract them subse, the Labour Party has suspended Jeremy. Robyn pending investigation.

He has also had the whip removed from the Parliamentary Labour Party.

This is after the release of the antisemitism report.

I don't see how Starmer can avoid being blamed for "sewing further division in the party " Ilovecheese. We are in a very difficult place with strong view and feelings in what I suppose could be called both camps.
I liked him when he was in charge at the CPS, admired his probono work as a barrister and so far, I'm liking him as Labour leader. I voted Labour when Corybn was leader because I feared years of Conservative misrule. The destruction of public services, neglect of the people who need a LP government most.
I genuinely cannot understand how anyone on the left can prefer a tory government to supporting a Labour Party leader who doesn't tick all their pure boxes.

Ilovecheese Wed 18-Nov-20 13:52:42

He isn't trying to please all sections of the party from I have seen either Iam64, but he has said that he wants to unite the party.
It looks to me that you are quite right that he is trying to appeal to a broader electorate, but surely he should be able to do that without sewing further division in the party.

Well people buy their favourite paper regularly and if those people reading papers the mail, express, sun tv, believe what they are reading and seeing, getting their information from, the Billionaire owners of papers have done their job. I can understand that it is plain to see, except that there are none so blind as those who will not see.

Anniebach Wed 18-Nov-20 13:51:41

I wouldn’t mix with or defend any racist

Iam64 Wed 18-Nov-20 13:49:42

Franbern - yes I could name a small number but of course, won't do that on this site.
Are you suggesting that any of the political parties is free of bigotry, racism, islamophobia or anti semitism. Do you dismiss the findings of the report ?

Franbern Wed 18-Nov-20 13:46:42

Anniebach

Franberg how can the Labour Party be anti semetic ?

There are anti semites in the Labour Party.

Could you name any????

Iam64 Wed 18-Nov-20 13:44:35

He isn't trying to please all sections of the Party from what I've seen. He's establishing himself as the Leader of the LP. Hopefully he's appealing to a broader electorate than Corbyn did . We need a Labour government and Starmer is the best hope we have of achieving that currently.

Ilovecheese

I thought that Keir Starmer wanted to bring the party together, yet seems to be going out of his way to alienate anyone with a left wing viewpoint.

I think in trying to please all sections of the Party, he is in fact not pleasing any.

Jeremy Corbyn has released a statement saying that he intends to remain as an Independent MP for his constituency.

Which he has every right to do. If he doesn't resign (which he isn't going to) Only his electors can remove him. As he appears to have been a perfectly good constituency MP for the past 30+ years, they aren't likely to.

Galaxy Wed 18-Nov-20 12:51:12

Keira Starmer is stronger than I thought.

Galaxy Wed 18-Nov-20 12:50:17

In my view one of the contributions to the labour catastrophe in the last election was the ongoing narrative that those who believe the media are stupid, the whole turkeys voting for christmas is about as offensive as it gets. If you keep treating people with disdain dont be surprised if they vote for someone else. It also seemed to be a strategy favoured by those people who needed the labour party least.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 18-Nov-20 12:41:43

Well Kier Starmer has said that Jeremy Corbyn will not have the Labour Party Whip restored to him.

Jeremy Corbyn has released a statement saying that he intends to remain as an Independent MP for his constituency.

Fennel Wed 18-Nov-20 11:59:44

Franbern - I completely agree. The rightwing press and other media were complicit too.

Anniebach Wed 18-Nov-20 11:47:44

The most dangerous is denying anti semetism, all racism .

GagaJo Wed 18-Nov-20 11:35:19

Agree, especially given the swing to the right, world-wide. Who is safe, if even those who protect the vulnerable have been labelled unsafe? Who do those in danger go to?

trisher Wed 18-Nov-20 11:31:08

I think using accusations of antisemitism for political ends is one of the most dangerous concepts in British Politics.

Grany Wed 18-Nov-20 11:28:50

Very well Said Franbern I agree with you.

Anniebach Wed 18-Nov-20 11:28:01

Isn’t there a thread on the tories and Islamophobia ?

GagaJo Wed 18-Nov-20 11:26:01

Anniebach

Franberg how can the Labour Party be anti semetic ?

There are anti semites in the Labour Party.

Does this mean the Tories are racist and Islamophobic?

GagaJo Wed 18-Nov-20 11:22:57

Couldn't agree more Franbern.

Anniebach Wed 18-Nov-20 10:28:23

Franberg how can the Labour Party be anti semetic ?

There are anti semites in the Labour Party.

Franbern Wed 18-Nov-20 10:16:17

Anniebach let's ask you if YOU think that the LP is anti-semitic.
All I would say that, before I moved, I was in a Constituency LP which had a very large jewish membership, that Constituency party fought long against the lies of anti-semitism in the LP. After moving I became a member of a Constituency LP within which I may well be the only jewish member. That constituency party has fought, long and hard against the lies of anti-semitism.

Anti-semitism seems to be only in the experience of a few people who did not like the left wing politics of JC - they deliberately confused policies and discussion on the horrific take over by the extreme right of the State of Israel, and their racist treatment of the Palestinians, with that of being of anti-jewish.
