It looks as if Trump will win now

Looking at the figures, it seems very likely that Trump has won a second term. How that will affect the world remains to be seen.?

Smileless2012 Wed 04-Nov-20 09:22:09

Well according to Trump, he already has and if he doesn't he's going to attempt to subvert America's legal process and go straight to the Supreme Court!!

It's close but it's not over yet so all we can do is wait.

Sparklefizz Wed 04-Nov-20 09:29:12

If the Democrats had put up a younger and more mentally alert candidate than Joe Biden, they would have been more successful.

But still, it's not over yet .......

Ellianne Wed 04-Nov-20 09:31:55

I so agree Sparklefizz, what were they thinking?
Is this result going to take days yet?

Kinsi10 Wed 04-Nov-20 09:33:35

I understand people not liking Trump - I don't like him either. However, I think it will be a sad day for the UK if Biden wins. He has already said the UK will 'go down the list' meaning a trade deal with us would be delayed.

Kandinsky Wed 04-Nov-20 09:34:16

Agree. Biden is too old.

GrannyO Wed 04-Nov-20 09:37:19

I fear for the world now. Putin must be falling off his chair laughing. Are Americans really that shallow?

Applegran Wed 04-Nov-20 09:37:37

I am worried and hoped to wake up to a Biden landslide - but that deluded hope is out of the window. At the moment I don't think we can know what the final outcome will be - it still could be Biden! If not, I fear for American democracy and for its affects for the world. We need to keep our own democracy alive and well! I hope the day will come when we have fair voting.

Froglady Wed 04-Nov-20 09:41:13

Quite a few people have gained the right to vote in this election as they weren't before as they had convictions against them. I think they had served their sentences but still weren't allowed to vote. That was challenged and they won the right. Other would be voters couldn't vote because they hadn't paid off court fees and fines so weren't able to vote.
Are convicted criminals in the UK allowed to vote while they are still serving their sentences (can't recall what happens here but I suspect they are not) but presumably they are allowed once they have served their term. What happens to prisoners that are on parole from prison, and ones that are on license from prison?
Anyway, I am dreading the result today. And I feel so down about it all.

Kinsil0 - a Biden win would be a good thing for the UK as he believes in global warming, he is not going to deliberately stir up hatred or do everything to simply line his own pockets irrespective of the damage he does to others and to other countries.

Furthermore, he has previously worked with administrators all over the world and is not inclined to cozy up to dictators. All these and more are better for the UK than a Trump alternative.

pollyperkins Wed 04-Nov-20 09:44:34

My worry is that it would be disastrous for the future of the planet if Trump, a climate change denier gets in again. Without the US on board we haven’t got a hope.

Struggling2do1 Wed 04-Nov-20 09:44:42

Then in four more years Trump junior will take over. We may be watching a dictatorship in the making. A disaster for the free world ?.

polnan Wed 04-Nov-20 09:48:39

well! is it really that much better here? just pondering!

Cs783 Wed 04-Nov-20 09:50:34

Yes Applegran let’s learn what we can and take a look at our own democracy. Lots we could improve!

dragonfly46 Wed 04-Nov-20 09:51:54

With Global warming and Covid I think we are on the path to extinction!

Yes, this is what worries me .... a dictatorship in the making. If the vote doesn't go your way, declare it illegal, null and void, whatever.

Theoddbird Wed 04-Nov-20 09:54:50

Goodness why you think that. I have been watching. Biden still has a lead. Millions of votes still to be counted.

Annaram1 Wed 04-Nov-20 10:02:13

If you think Biden has lost his marbles, just look at Trump. He has lost a lot more marbles. He is totally mad. he is asking the Supreme Court to stop the counting. At least Biden is a decent chap while Trump is the opposite. I'm amazed anyone would vote for him. Americans are a strange lot.

Joyfulnanna Wed 04-Nov-20 10:03:53

I love gransnet, so much better than having to watch the news.

jaylucy Wed 04-Nov-20 10:13:20

Who knows with the extra long rigmarole that the voting system has in the US.
It ain't over until its over!

Dorsetcupcake61 Wed 04-Nov-20 10:13:28

It still looks fairly close but I dont know if their college system has votes to be declared that make a Trump win inevitable.
To me it seems incredible that although Biden has the popular vote Trump can win.
Overall I find myself ,like I'm sure many others, wondering how such an unpleasant man can not only win but gain the support of those he appears to show disdain for. Apparently a representative of AlAnon has been elected to the Senate.
Arguably we have our own mini Trump who despite cronyism and calamitous dealing with Covid I'm sure would be reelected tomorrow.
It seems greed is good, more important than honesty and equality. There seems little empathy for those who are not economically viable.
Why this callousness exists I dont know. Two thoughts did occur to me this morning though. Its many decades since legislation for equality fought for and passed, whether on grounds of race, sex or disability. Is it something that's just taken for granted as those who remember how it was before become fewer or arguably less relevant?
Since the second world war, certainly in UK, we have had a welfare state and social care etc. Despite lots of legislation and political correctness im not sure anything has really changed on the ground level. There is a veneer of protection against discrimination but when you look closely things havent changed beyond recognition. Arguably despite endless Democrat/Labour rhetoric groups perceptions of real change hasn't happened. Hence disillusioned Americans go for Trump and Brits for Brexit. I know it's not as simple as that but it feels as though something major may happen, even if not immediately. Worrying times.

jenwren Wed 04-Nov-20 10:19:29

How on earth could someone think 'Global warming' is ok? Biden too old? do not think so! With age comes 'wisdom' Obviously Trump's brain bypassed this gift.

Craftycat Wed 04-Nov-20 10:19:46

I couldn't give a fig who wins! But I was just hoping to see an end to that odious man!

Moggycuddler Wed 04-Nov-20 10:22:21

I was desperately hoping it would be a landslide for Biden - just to get rid of Trump. Biden isn't upto much but he's better than Trump even if he has dementia, his intentions are better. But it's obviously going to be very close. America has changed beyond tecognition and is like a country run by and half populated with lunatics.

henetha Wed 04-Nov-20 10:24:13

Is there anyone more un-democratic thaan Trump! Heaven help us if he wins.

Couldn't agree with you more Annaraml

How did Hitler have so many cruel followers and get away with murdering millions of Jews? I have never understood how that happened, and here we are again thousands voting for a 'madman'
