New EU Treaty - a good deal or not?

I thought this deserved its own thread. This deal is about to be announced and I’ve just heard Farage on the radio claiming it will be sellout. Trying to stir the pot already. Just wondered how it will be spun. There will be a lot of relieved businesses and relief that there is no deal at least.

‘Gammons’ is an extremely derogatory term used against white people.
Shows that poster up for what he/she really thinks.
Disgusting. ( although fairly common remainer speak sadly )

No, it isn't. It describes a certain mindset.

As usual the Irish press gives more insight into what the loss of Erasmus means for the U.K. www.irishtimes.com/opinion/erasmus-exchanges-another-senseless-casualty-of-brexit-1.4443940

Eire is going to pay for NI students to continue participating in Erasmus.

The average leave voter will not give a toss about Erasmus, on account of they’ve never even heard of it ( I doubt many remain voters had heard of it either )
How many people have children who go to university abroad? Many have children who don’t go to university at all!
Percentage wise probably less than 10%.
It’s a non issue with the vast majority of people.

Nearly half of parents have a child who goes to university. Most of them had an opportunity to participate in Erasmus. In any case, Erasmus wasn't just for university students. Apprentices could take part and many primary schools took part in Erasmus programmes. It also involved hosting Europeans.

The new scheme is nowhere near as inclusive and students will be required to contribute financially, thus ensuring that those from low income families don't participate. There is no provision for any of the other schemes.

This is more to do with cutting off networking with Europe and ensuring young people don't get infected with pesky European ideas.

This is interesting

Very interesting to read the released papers with Margaret Thatchers comments on the EU. A lot of people who voted Leave did so for similar reasons.

It really is time to move onwards and upwards.

Rishi Sunak PM in-waiting

UK Chancellors have not had much success as PM for a very long time, probably not a great career move

JenniferEccles Sun 27-Dec-20 11:23:00

Oh dear ‘gammons’
What a horrible expression.
Imagine the outcry if comments were made regarding certain other skin colours?

seamstress Sun 27-Dec-20 11:21:33

Erasmus was stopped out of spite - they could have continued with it.

Nezumi65 Sun 27-Dec-20 11:17:38

Erasmus wasn’t just for university students though - that’s why it is such a loss.

Galaxy Sun 27-Dec-20 11:17:17

You dont understand the erasmus programme. It was for primary school children as well. My local school and its parents are very upset by its loss.

Well you need to stop reading right wing Tory mouthpieces if that’s what they are saying about Erasmus.

seamstress Sun 27-Dec-20 10:49:59

Where have all those gammons bawling for a no deal, clean break, lets go with WTO gone?

Urmstongran Sun 27-Dec-20 10:47:08

Thank you dragonfly and Maw. You both voted Remain yet can embrace Rishi Sunak’s hopes going forward.

I truly believe the UK will come on in leaps and bounds now. And I disagree with you MaizieD I do not think RS intends to announce austerity measures in his Budget to be announced in March.

From what I’ve read it seems the Erasmus programme benefitted EU students and UK universities the mos! Our own students will now have the Turing programme. Details to be announced.

vegansrock Sun 27-Dec-20 10:47:04

Well if you think that’s the end of negotiations with the EU forget it they are going to go on for years. No one has mentioned that Johnson has broken his promises on fishing, border in the Irish Sea, Treating NI differently etc All the extra paperwork and red tape is going to cost us dear There will be plenty to gripe about never fear.

tickingbird Sun 27-Dec-20 10:41:49

Oh dear! What will some of you have to gripe about now I wonder?

timetogo2016 Sun 27-Dec-20 10:12:02

Happy days ahead fingers crossed.

JenniferEccles Sun 27-Dec-20 10:10:00

Well you tried didn’t you Urms ?!

It definitely IS time for us all to put the divisions behind us and pull together as a free independent country.

There are lots of reasons to think 2021 will be a great year for us with the vaccination programme already well under way, as well as new opportunities as an independent nation.

MawBe Sun 27-Dec-20 10:09:17

Hear, hear Dragonfly ??
I was taken to task for using the word “rant” some pages ago. Well I stick by it or a close relative certainly “chunter” hmm

MaizieD Sun 27-Dec-20 10:05:57

What is this 'pulling together' that people keep referencing with an air of sanctimony?

The next step for most Remainers will, I suspect, be endurance...and campaigning for Rejoin... Like some people campaigned for Leave from the moment we joined the EEC

And Sunak can F off.

You realise that his next plan for the UK is austerity?

Nezumi65 Sun 27-Dec-20 09:59:30

I think talking about how we can forge closer links with the EU in the future is a very good thing indeed and not ‘harping back’. I would love to see closer educational links for example. My youngest is due to start a vocational course which used to see a European exchange - I would very much hope that can continue. I would support us rejoining Erasmus - that is a huge loss.

Nezumi65 Sun 27-Dec-20 09:57:06

The City has lost passporting rights which means it cannot continue as before. I have never particularly bought into the idea that the enormous wealth created in the City trickles down all that well, but I am not stupid enough to think that business moving to the EU won’t impact on the rest of us.
