I watched Johnson being interviewed by Marr, and was in high hopes that he would manage 15 minutes without lying.

Well he so nearly managed it until the last minute. Then out it popped.

Poor old Johnson, what a cross to bear, never managing to open your mouth or putting pen to paper without lying.

Listening to Biden talking about how Trump tried to influence the judiciary because he knew that some of his actions would have been condemned by the courts.

Remind me what did Johnson threaten after the judiciary ruled his actions illegal?

Justice should serve the people and not protect the government.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 08-Jan-21 10:24:48

Well it is welcome to see the government finally appearing to understand where Trumps behaviour gets a country.

But never forget that even though they were warned and warned over his rhetoric, and immorality, they were willing to cultivate him for gain.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 08-Jan-21 10:27:55

Never forget that when the British Ambassador prophetically described Trumps behaviour as only ending in catastrophe for the USA and those befriending him. Johnson threw him to the dogs.

Reminder that Mogg understood that those voting for Trump were similar to those voting for Brexit.

Mogg cynicism is disgraceful.

I see Williamson has been trying to throw his weight around, and without any expertise on the subject has tried to force universities to adopt the IRHAs definition of anti-semitism.

He has been accused of unwarranted interference which is both legally and morally wrong. Freedom of speech must prevail, within the bounds of the law.

I think it is safe to assume that he will be ignored. ?

A former chief prosecutor who was seeking to take Cummings to court over his alleged lockdown breaches has been forced to move house because of constant physical attacks on his property.

Good to read this morning that no British Conservative has actually ever heard of Donald Trump

A reminder

A reminder

'I don’t see why (Trump is) any less of a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize than Barack Obama'- Boris Johnson

There is certainly a side of the Conservatives that resembles the Trump half of the Republican party.

Trump's political party affiliation has changed numerous times. He registered as a Republican in Manhattan in 1987, switched to the Reform Party in 1999, the Democratic Party in 2001, and back to the Republican Party in 2009

Reminds me of our own dear PM's need to move to what serves him best.

I believe the Tories would recognise it as clearing the swamp

Professor Christopher Painter

Becoming increasingly clear Biden intends to clean up American Government. Means there are likely to be revelations about endemic corruption during years since 2016. That is potentially explosive for Johnson, Gove and Farage too, given networks that linked Brexit and Trump.

As the world unites in condemnation of Donald Trump, spare a thought for Kim Darroch, the former U.K. Ambassador to Washington, whose distinguished diplomatic career was felled by Donald Trump’s bullying and Boris Johnson’s craven cowardice.

Dear Dominic
I put the hapless Shapps up for the Today programme this morning. As I thought, Shapps yaps. On and on and on. Didn't understand half of it. Have you wangled a jab yet?

Kim Darroch will have an honourable legacy, unlike Trump or any of our pathetic Trump-loving Vote Leave government. who will only be remembered as Trump lackeys who were pushed into positions of power by Vladimir Putin and the tax dodging billionaires

It's probably not a good time to re-read The Handmaid's Tale, is it.

Probably not Pippa Z?

What I think this week has taught us is that leaders must not be allowed to lie. Nor should we accept populist leaders with their instigation of division and hate. But if they do, they must be called out with absolute vigour.

Lies has nearly brought the USA to civil war.

We must learn this lesson in the U.K.

Liars must not prevail, particularly liars who have modelled so much of their leadership on Trump presidency.

The Conservatives have awarded a £100,000,000 contract to a Conservative donor to supply laptops to schools.

The system in the UK is well and truly broken.

I think we need to look closer at our journalism. There have been times when the journalists have allowed the tide to drag them in particular directions in many First World countries. This has meant they have muted opposition to some of news outlets as, although they opposed they drifted with a movement more and more to the right or following nativist thinking. There has been a real tendency to beat up any opposition and our pillars or democracy.

varian Sat 09-Jan-21 18:25:30

I agree Whitewavemark" that we cannot allow politicians to lie.

Compare the treatment meeted out to Nick Clegg, who had promised in the LibDem manifesto of 2010 not to raise tuition fees, then (in my view wrongly) agreed to allow it when his party were junior partners in a coalition in exchange for the Pupil Premium, compare his treatment with that of Boris Johnson, a man who has been sacked for lying at least twice (by The Times and by John Major).

Nick Clegg was pilloried relentlessly by the right wing media. Boris Johnson not only gets away with habitual lying, but is excused because he's "good old Boris", and ends up as PM, where his constant lying continues unabated and unremarked.

Ilovecheese Sat 09-Jan-21 19:00:49

Why do you think that is varian? Is it that things have changed over the last decade and lies have become more acceptable? Or is it the type of men like Boris Johnson have always been seen as "lovable rogues " and are not held to a high standard of behaviour?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 09-Jan-21 19:05:25

I understand that Johnson has ensured that his father had received the second booster dose of vaccine.

Couldn’t he have had it done in France? I thought that was his country of choice.
