Sorry, I forgot to say that it was usually children who tamed the Jackdaws.

FannyCornforth Fri 15-Jan-21 09:04:30

I've started the bird thread smile
GagaJo it was once very common for people to have tame Jackdaws. Both my mom and dad did.

*Fanny Cornforth* I don't know how to send a PM yet otherwise would happily have a little chat on the side with you about jackdaws!

That has to be one of the most unusual posts on GN that I have seen so far!

We've got a couple of magpies who will shortly be evicted.......nasty birds attack the smaller birds.........they can squat at the Tower! No one will notice, surely?! ??‍♀️??

Nell If you want to send someone a PM, go to one of their posts.
Then tap on the 3 dots at the bottom right of your screen.
Then tap on PM.
It will open up a dialog box for you to put your message in.

Nell8 I think that I might start a new thread on tame birds. Keep a (black, beady) eye out!

Hmmm, is there a link between Merlina and Melania?

That was my first thought grin

'Beautiful' birds? Mmmmmm.......

Absolutely! Their beautiful glossy feathers and proud profile.
I love all birds, but I have a very soft spot for corvids. They are so intelligent.
I had pet (for want of a better word) Tawny Owls all of my childhood and early adulthood.
I started writing about them on the Night Owls thread, but I think that it was for me rather than anyone else!

GrannyGravy13 Fri 15-Jan-21 08:17:32

They are free to fly during the day, then they are put to bed in a very large enclosure at night CanadianGran

CanadianGran Fri 15-Jan-21 08:10:46

We have so many here, perhaps we could send one over?

I wonder how free they are (do they have clipped feathers), and how long they generally live?

Kim19 Fri 15-Jan-21 08:10:11

Yes it's Queen Raven Merlina who's gone AWOL feared dead!

FannyCornforth Fri 15-Jan-21 08:07:52

Yes, she was the Queen Raven.
Queen Merlina. Beautiful birds.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 15-Jan-21 08:05:58

Merlina has been missing for two weeks, that leaves seven ravens at the Tower of London. She was the top female and very popular with visitors and Wardens.

The superstition is that there must be at least six, so currently they still have a spare.

GardenerGran Fri 15-Jan-21 08:04:59

Was it the three-eyed raven?

Kim19 Fri 15-Jan-21 08:02:16

Aye. Right. Whatever floats your boat.

tanith Fri 15-Jan-21 08:01:25

True but there are still 6 left the required amount to save us ?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 15-Jan-21 07:59:29

It has been kept under wraps for weeks, but one of the ravens has left the Tower???
