The UK Labour Party has hired a former Israeli spy to help manage its social media, The Electronic Intifada can reveal.

Assaf Kaplan will work in the office of Labour leader Keir Starmer, a source with knowledge of the hire said.

Kaplan was in Israeli military intelligence for nearly five years, an officer in Unit 8200, its cyberwarfare branch.

Unit 8200 specializes in spying, hacking and encryption. It carries out blackmail, mass surveillance and systematic discrimination against Palestinians.

In 2014, a group of whistleblowers detailed how the unit spies on Palestinian civilians living under Israeli military occupation.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Kaplan was in the Israeli army’s military intelligence division from May 2009 to November 2013.

Callistemon

His job will allegedly be Social Listening and Organising Manager.

Is Gransnet top of his list?
???

I'd like to see him try to organise us.

I'd rather face fifty 15 year olds in a too small classroom.

Allegedly appointed

Keep on saying that, Annieb

Allegedly

I follow a number of Corbynites on twitter. I think they'd have been making some noise about it if it were true 'cos they're very fast off the Starmer-hate draw. Not a peep have I seen...

Don't know who you are following MaizieD but Chris Williamson and Asa Winstanley have both tweeted about it.

If it wasn't true I'm sure Starmer would have said that by now.

Anniebach Thu 21-Jan-21 14:18:45

Starmer could always do a Corbin,

at the wreath laying ceremony for murderers of an Olympic
Team, ‘ I was present at wreath laying but I don’t think
I was actually involved ‘ - the Guardian not Twitter

Casdon Thu 21-Jan-21 14:22:17

And of course, Chris Winstanley and Asa Winstanley have no axes to grind at all...... not.

trisher Thu 21-Jan-21 14:36:15

Casdon whatever axes they are grinding they have tweeted!

Casdon Thu 21-Jan-21 15:23:41

I was referring to their histories and political standpoints.

Ramblingrose22 Thu 21-Jan-21 15:30:13

Knowing the views of Asa Winstanley and Chris Williamson explains why the Corbyn cult want to make a thing of this.

MaizieD Thu 21-Jan-21 15:36:06

So, all the stories I can find about this emanate from Asa Winstanley's story on the Electronic Intifada.

Not surprising that he's tweeting it.

Need corroboration of it. I can't find anything.

And I don't follow every Corbynite on twitter..

And what is their source, Grany?

The translation of "a source with knowledge of the hire said" is either "We sourced this by listening at keyholes, but if we told you that, you would be just as aghast at us as at them employing a man who has been involved in mass surveillance" or perhaps "We don't really know if this is true or not, so we will claim that we were told it by an anonymous source"

If he has been taken on, and if his past is at all dodgy, it will be know definitely by someone, who will doubtless enlighten the rest of us soon.

Anniebach Thu 21-Jan-21 17:50:34

I have only heard of the Morning Star, it was The Daily Worker , founded by the Communist Party, I remember it in
Newsagents , never heard of the rest

GagaJo Thu 21-Jan-21 17:58:56

They are international sources, to be expected, given he is from the middle east.

I haven't looked at all those site, GagaJo, but all the ones I found in a search had exactly the same source for their story, Electronic Intifada.

So, if you could find some with a different source it would be more believable.

Anniebach Thu 21-Jan-21 18:35:46

I have much doubt about this, it is said over and over the press
lied about Corbyn .

The Morning Star, founded by the communist party reports it,
the Communist Party announced it would not stand in elections when Corbyn became leader

Iam64 Thu 21-Jan-21 18:45:11

I find it pathetic to use anything to undermine the democratically elected leader of the LP. We have a dreadful Tory govt, 80 majority, thanks largely to Momentum and Corbyn.
Those attacking Starmer for anything and everything, are the same people who said any LP member or supporter must support Corbyn.
We are living in Groundhog Day in more ways than the pandemuc

Chewbacca Thu 21-Jan-21 19:08:48

Well said Iam64, that's exactly how I feel as well.
And I'm having less and less confidence in the veracity and accuracy of OPs posts lately.

GagaJo Thu 21-Jan-21 19:18:48

Hang on , Iam64. I have always voted Labour. I will probably vote Labour in the next election. But I am entitled to discuss things that the party does that I DON'T approve of. I would do it whoever was leader. It is part of living in a democracy.

It is irrelevant whether or not you have confidence in my posts Chewbacca. GN is a site for members to discuss things of interest. This post has 68 posts. Safe to assume it is therefore of interest even if it does not interest you.

Casdon Thu 21-Jan-21 19:21:59

I agree too Iam64. Starmer’s the best leader for many years, and the best chance there is of establishing the credibility of the Labour Party with the voting public again. He needs to be allowed to get on with his job without the pointless, destructive attempts to rubbish everything he does from the far left - I’ve said it before, I just think they need to break away altogether and form their own party.

growstuff Thu 21-Jan-21 19:22:49

Iam64 and Chewbacca I feel the same - and I've only ever voted Labour once in my life. Not that my vote will matter, I will probably vote Labour in the next general election. I'm actually put off by those still pining for "pure socialism" and some of the idealism. It will be a question of counting the numbers in the constituencies which matter, but I suspect there are many people who have similar views.

I haven't seen this appointment reported anywhere apart from sources which have a somewhat anti-semitic bias.

trisher Thu 21-Jan-21 19:29:00

Also tweeted on 19th Jan by Jonathan Cook a recognised and award winnng journalist specialsing in the Palestinian conflict. If it wasn't true you would have expected at the very least a tweet from Starmer.
If any other political leader had hired someone who had worked in espionage for any other country there would be complete uproar.

growstuff Thu 21-Jan-21 19:44:42

Those who use Twitter and other social media can't have missed the anti-Starmer trolling. Israel has a reputation for its control of social media (for good or bad).

The reports I've read have stated that this person will be responsible for monitoring social media. There's nothing like a poacher turned gamekeeper.

Anniebach Thu 21-Jan-21 19:46:39

Allegedly hired

Grany Thu 21-Jan-21 20:10:33

Well Said Gagajo* and trisher

As Starmer rid labour of Jews from the party on the left he would certainly employ a Israeli former spy too

People have a right to speak up what he is trying to do.
