The UK Labour Party has hired a former Israeli spy to help manage its social media, The Electronic Intifada can reveal.

Assaf Kaplan will work in the office of Labour leader Keir Starmer, a source with knowledge of the hire said.

Kaplan was in Israeli military intelligence for nearly five years, an officer in Unit 8200, its cyberwarfare branch.

Unit 8200 specializes in spying, hacking and encryption. It carries out blackmail, mass surveillance and systematic discrimination against Palestinians.

In 2014, a group of whistleblowers detailed how the unit spies on Palestinian civilians living under Israeli military occupation.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Kaplan was in the Israeli army’s military intelligence division from May 2009 to November 2013.

People at GCHQ are usually professionals who are adult aand experienced. Unit 8200 hires the brightest school leavers and starts monitoring and giving them training from 16-18. It never hires Palestinians. In 2014 some of the retired recruits wrote about how they had been asked to target Palestinian citizens of Israel and monitor their personal details and sexual preferences in order to exert pressure on them. Can you imagine what would happen if it was revealed that GCHQ was doing similar things to British Asians? You can't compare the two.

Are we suggesting people employed at GCHQ are ‘involved in espionage’?
There was a problem with anti semitism in the LP. Rows about which members of the Jewish community are seen as the ‘right kind of Jews’ continue. It’s nauseating.

Assaf Kaplan has changed his linked in profile to remove any evidence of work that could class as espionage. Bit late for that really.

Surely the Daily Mail would have reported it,

I don't actually see why they 'surely' would have reported it because I don't think it would be shocking to their readers.

It's the extremely anti Zionist wing of the Labour Party who would be upset by it. Indeed, who are upset by it even though we don't have a reliable set of sources for it.

I must admit that I'd be rather shock if it were true, but I'm reserving judgement until we know for sure.

And castigating those who read the mail is one of the reasons we have Johnson in power. It really is a counter productive thing to do.

Casdon Thu 21-Jan-21 21:59:39

I know, but on this post it’s nearly all Labour supporters of various hues, so the Mail is very unlikely to be our paper of choice.

GagaJo Thu 21-Jan-21 21:56:30

There are a number of posters who do. And who have defended it in the past.

Casdon Thu 21-Jan-21 21:48:29

GagaJo I don’t think most of the people responding on this post are likely to be reading the Daily Mail somehow!

GagaJo Thu 21-Jan-21 21:43:04

Five posts would suggest engagement in a discussion. ??

PippaZ Thu 21-Jan-21 21:38:02

I cannot find one believable source that repeats this nonsense. When it's followed up by reputable journalists it will be worth discussing.

PECS, there will be fluster and flounce until it is reported in the Daily Mail, at which point the thread will surprising lose interest for all the fake news accusers. It's a regular pattern.

Does everything have to be black and white? I just want to see balance and, so far, there isn't. There seems to be very little information available about this person.

growstuff Thu 21-Jan-21 21:21:55

PECS

"The Electronic Intifada is an online Chicago-based publication covering the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. It describes itself as not-for-profit, independent and providing a Palestinian perspective"
Why would this be any more less trustworthy than any other media outlet? Just because it is Arab?

I don't suppose it is, but I also don't suppose there are many (if any) media outlets without bias. What is a little concerning about this announcement is that it's not being reported by a range of sources. The Elecronic Intifada does have an anti-Israeli bias, which isn't necessarily a bad thing to balance pro-Israeli sources, but I'd prefer to see it reported elsewhere.

So much fake news ...

I suppose it gives people a buzz ... or something sad but it's obviously not going to stop just because the fake news maker in chief has gone I suppose.

How and when did Starmer "rid the labour of Jews?

I was just wondering that, too...

PippaZ Thu 21-Jan-21 20:39:12

Grany

Well Said Gagajo* and trisher

As Starmer rid labour of Jews from the party on the left he would certainly employ a Israeli former spy too

People have a right to speak up what he is trying to do.

trisher Thu 21-Jan-21 20:17:58

There are people who are members of the LP and Palestinian supporters who see this as a direct attack on them.
There is a petition about this

Allegedly hired

growstuff Thu 21-Jan-21 19:44:42

Those who use Twitter and other social media can't have missed the anti-Starmer trolling. Israel has a reputation for its control of social media (for good or bad).

The reports I've read have stated that this person will be responsible for monitoring social media. There's nothing like a poacher turned gamekeeper.

trisher Thu 21-Jan-21 19:29:00

Also tweeted on 19th Jan by Jonathan Cook a recognised and award winnng journalist specialsing in the Palestinian conflict. If it wasn't true you would have expected at the very least a tweet from Starmer.
If any other political leader had hired someone who had worked in espionage for any other country there would be complete uproar.

growstuff Thu 21-Jan-21 19:22:49

Iam64 and Chewbacca I feel the same - and I've only ever voted Labour once in my life. Not that my vote will matter, I will probably vote Labour in the next general election. I'm actually put off by those still pining for "pure socialism" and some of the idealism. It will be a question of counting the numbers in the constituencies which matter, but I suspect there are many people who have similar views.

I haven't seen this appointment reported anywhere apart from sources which have a somewhat anti-semitic bias.

Casdon Thu 21-Jan-21 19:21:59

I agree too Iam64. Starmer’s the best leader for many years, and the best chance there is of establishing the credibility of the Labour Party with the voting public again. He needs to be allowed to get on with his job without the pointless, destructive attempts to rubbish everything he does from the far left - I’ve said it before, I just think they need to break away altogether and form their own party.
