Watching the US Inauguration

I’m holding my breath. And I feel quite tearful!

Saetana Fri 22-Jan-21 00:28:01

I enjoyed the cut-down inauguration for the most part. Lady Gaga performed a beautiful and triumphant version of the American national anthem, J-Lo also perfomed a great mashup of two great american musical songs. Lady Gaga is a friend of Joe Biden back from the days when he was Barack Obamas VP and they worked on a campaign together. I think the musical and poetry offerings struck a good balance between the melting pot that is America with intentions of bringing people together and hope for the future. I cannot understand those who are sniping at these contributions and thus I challege them to bring forth their own song or poem to fit the proceedings - if they are so keen to criticise others. We in the UK are fully behind our Amerian cousins' attempts to return to normality - part of this should be raised in song, poetry and celebration!

Well said Santana.

Agreed Saetane, I found the simplicity of the whole service very reassuring and the flag ground covering very impressive.

Loved the feeling of diverse families who genuinely cared about each other and about their nation. A breath of fresh air at last.

My name is that of a male character from a favourite fantasy novel of mine - Saetan, which I added an "a" onto to make it female. The novel is the Black Jewels series by Anne Bishop - highly recommended if you are a fantasy fan [flowers}

I enjoyed watching the whole service and feel that the World is a safer place now that Trump is out.
Has anyone watched 'The Trump Show' available on BBC iplayer. 4 episodes and well worth watching.
I binged watched it and Episode 4 was so interesting I watched it twice.

I watched it whilst FaceTiming with DD1 who happens to live in downtown DC so enjoyed every minute of it. She went up to her roof terrace and watched the departure of DT with tears in her eyes, tears of relief that he was gone.

Thought all the performers did amazingly well but for me the best part was the Marine Band who played throughout in bitterly cold conditions.

DD1 went down to walk the dog yesterday and said the atmosphere had changed so much it was palpable. She was encouraged by the officials tidying up to take some of the thousands of flags that had been put in place.

For those interested in what people were wearing - or in what they were saying by what they were wearing - you may find this interesting.

Dr. Jill Biden's Inauguration Evening Dress had flowers from all 50 States plus the US territories embroidered on it, with the flower of Delaware sewn near her heart and the other flowers branching out from it. What a lovely message from a lovely woman.
ETA: "Inside of the coat, representing the lifelong calling and service of Dr. Biden as an educator is a hand embroidery on the lining with a quote from Founding Father Benjamin Franklin:
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”
The materials used were existing available fabrics to minimize the impact on the environment."

That was Garth Brooks grumppa some years ago a very popular country singer and very good looking in his hey day.

What a beautiful dress and coat, they show a lot of thought, love and class, all of those qualities sadly lacking in the Trump family.

SueDonim Fri 22-Jan-21 15:28:22

That outfit is exquisite! ❤️

Callistemon Fri 22-Jan-21 15:59:10

It brings to mind Queen Elizabeth 11's coronation dress. That too was embroidered in Norman Hartnells's workshop with symbolic flowers.
"The final version featured a Tudor rose, embroidered in very pale pink silk, with pearls, gold and silver bullion, and rose diamante; the Welsh leek, embroidered in white silk with leaves of very pale green silk; the Scottish thistle, with pale mauve silk and amethysts and a calyx embroidered in reseda green silk, silver thread, and diamante dewdrops; the Irish shamrock, like the thistle, was embroidered in soft green silk, silver thread, bullion, and diamante.[5] the Canadian maple leaf, made with green silk embroideries with a crystal vein and gold border; the silver fern of New Zealand, embroidered in straight stitches using soft green silk and veined in silver and crystal; the Australian wattle flower, made with a coarse mimosa yellow wool and green and gold foliage; the South African protea, embroidered in shaded pink silk, with green silk leaves and silver outlined petals; the lotus flower of India, made with seed pearls and diamante and mother of pearl embroidered petals; the Lotus flower of Ceylon, made with opals, mother of pearl, diamante, and soft green silk; and the three emblems of Pakistan: wheat, in oat-shaped diamante and fronds of golden crystal, cotton, made in silver with leaves of green silk, and jute, embroidered in green silk and golden thread."

Didn’t someone recently have a wedding dress with something symbolic embroidered in? Oooops wasn’t it she who must not be mentioned.....

Callistemon Fri 22-Jan-21 22:29:24

Shhhh
