Watching the US Inauguration

Me too. I’m hoping it’s a brave new dawn, not just for America but for the whole world. Never felt so emotional at an inauguration before. Well done America! (Just wish the women involved wore good sensible shoes though: worried that they’ll trip over)

It is understood that PM Boris has invited President Biden to attend, with other world dignitaries and their entourage, the 2021 G7 Summit, This to take place in Cornwall. Covid cases in the SW have increased which is already threatening the hospitality businessThis they do not need.

'Boris' didn't invite anybody. It's a long planned summit of world leaders and they all come as a matter of course.

Hello, I've just joined from the US. As an 80-year-old American, I've watched a great many, but I've also never felt as emotional before as for this one ( part of that was anxiety, unfortunately . I think the closest was during JFK's first inauguration.
I had the same thoughts about the shoes -all that walking, and especially so many flights of stairs to navigate. There must have been several pairs of tired, achy, but happy feet that night!

Now Trump's followers in the Proud Boys are mocking him and he has thousands that believe he let them down. Now, hopefully, others gently bring them back to reality so that we don't have more suicides. I fear the two Capitol Police officers may have committed suicide because of their involvement and the realization that they were involved in something so horrid.

With regard to shoes, did the new First Lady not change from a pair of blue shoes that matched her coat to a cream (probably more comfortable) pair - what a sensible lady.

I don't have much sympathy for Melania Trump but whenever I saw her in those ridiculous 6 inch heels I thought "I do hope she gets millions in alimony, to make the pain worth it"

Welcome? it is so good to hear from our American friends.

I’ve been an avid watcher during the past few months and thrilled to see Biden get elected.

I’m sure that not all the ills will be dealt with but let’s hope enough can be done to start mitigating against the huge divisions in the USA.

He is an IRA sympathiser who with Obama bombed 7 different countries!!! His speech was a load of waffle which everyone wanted to hear but meant nothing. He was very quick to condemn (quite rightly) the storming of the Capitol, but no condemnation of the Antifa rioting and looting. Dangerous man.

What???? By UK standards he’s middle of the road, he’s been a successful Vice President and he’s trying to be inclusive. Very dodgy, unlike the entire Trump clan.

I still haven't actually worked out what a 'lefty' is and what is wrong with being one...

People have, over the years, tried to start discussions in this forum to tease out what is meant by this label, but funnily enough, the posters who toss out this label, spit it out, almost, as they are so clearly offended by 'lefties' and their ilk, never come to the discussion to offer a definition or tell what is so dreadful about them.

My problem with the inauguration was not Lad Gaga or Jennifer-Lopez, but the man who sang “Amazing grace, how swee’ the soun’....”. He just couldn’t enunciate hard consonants.

I do prefer the swift and ruthless handover we have in the UK after a general election, but if the system requires two months to saddle up the wagons and get to the White House, then a a big noisy party makes a lot of sense.

Good to hear that Dr Biden is carrying on working - I always thought that Michelle Obama must have been very bored as First Lady.

Michelle Obama was an extremely hard-working First Lady who achieved many reforms and improvements together with Dr Jill Biden. These are well documented in her books and elsewhere. In 2020 not without good reason did she top the Gallup's Pole of the most admired woman in America for the third year running.
