I think it’s an unhappy mix of incompetence, not caring, seeing a financial opportunity and -at the start - yes wanting to kill off some OAPs to save money. I worked with an ex nurse and she told us it was a normal thing for care home managers to hope for a bad winter to ‘clear the decks’. Johnson himself said at the start “if a few pensioners have to die then so be it”. Then I can quote my SiL A&E consultant who said “oh old people always die off with flu - it’s normal”. I don’t think any of them knew how bad it would really be and by the time they realised it was too late. Yes they’ve made money out of it and Yes they saw an opportunity to reduce the pension budget. What they didn’t see was the eventual scale of it.
