I have a vague memory now about a grim children's poem (the kind I loved) about a boy called Augustus.
He wouldn't eat his soup.

I quite like it. Gus will be the nickname though.

Not at Eton he won't! be ribbed at school! August seems to be a popular name especially for German Princes, so maybe not too ridiculous! Not sure how you pronounce it though in English. AugUst maybe?!

We took my mum to see the Chippendales in days gone by.

This young man appeared an stage and introduced himself as August. “What a strange name” said mum. He was actually telling us which month he was representing on the Chippendales calendar ??

You don't need to discuss much! Just listen to me..
Make a new plan, Stan! grin

Agree Ellieanne will probably be shortened to Gus.

My dad had friend called Gus, expect it was probably short for Angus ??

Why is August ridiculous Kandinsky? It’s an old name, his ancestor was called it, and it’s unusual. That doesn’t make it ridiculous. They will probably know him as Gus, which is not even that uncommon. People call their babies much more ridiculous names than that.

Augustus was DH's grandfather's name (Italian descent).
Had I known this when my son was born, I think I would have had as a middle name.

I think I much prefer the name Augustus to August.

He will just get called "Gus" by his mates. That's ok.

PetitFromage Sat 20-Feb-21 14:25:22

Why not February?

I love to read about the names babies are given. I’m sure Prince Philip will be pleased. He needs some cheerful news at the moment.
Hawke reminds me of Hawke’s Bay in NZ.
I wonder what he will actually be called? If it’s the first name, will the emphasis be on the Au like the month, or the gust like an august personage?

Kandinsky Sat 20-Feb-21 14:17:45

August is just ridiculous.

timetogo2016 Sat 20-Feb-21 14:15:11

Great choice of name,Hawke is interesting.

mrsgreenfingers56 Sat 20-Feb-21 14:14:30

Hecky pecky, this poor kid will get some ribbing at school with a name like August!

Anniebach Sat 20-Feb-21 14:14:05

Perhaps Hawke after his fathers family

August Philip Hawke Brooksbank. Queen Victoria's husband Albert had the middle name of August, Prince Philip will be touched to have his name included and I have no idea about the choice of Hawke. I like Princess Eugenie and the photograph of the 3 of them, taken by their midwife, is lovely.
