One of the first things any Christian will realise is that we are all sinners without exception, Christian, pagan, atheist, moslem, Buddhist. ‘For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God’ from Romans. Christians don’t put themselves above anyone, why would they? Often they would like others to experience their joy, however, and it is joy. That is why they tell others about their faith, not to earn brownie points. Of course there are some nasty people amongst them just as there are some nasty people amongst non Christians. I think the politician likely meant well but didn’t understand that what he was doing could be taken as an insult.
Christians think I'm sinner, I don't. I think I have a lot to learn but I don't think I'm tainted by original sin just by being born.
My cousin is a lay preacher, a lovely chap who is kind and helpful to everyone he meets. While preaching at a family member's funeral he told us how sad he was that this person hadn't gone to heaven and that the rest of us weren't going either, because we didn't subscribe to the same brand of Christianity as him.
I'm afraid I laughed (quietly, it was a funeral....) but my parents were so upset. That wasn't helping others find their joy.
