Just when you think they can’t sink any lower

Of course there are some nasty people amongst them just as there are some nasty people amongst non Christians.

nanna8 and often wicked people use Christianity as a front to hide their wickedness.

I'm surprised, too, at the notion that Christians generally are not left of centre politically.

OnwardandUpward it is so sad and I am sorry you didn’t know GransNet as it use to be . There are still some really nice posters but far from the number there use to be. You will find which threads to avoid if you feel bullied or upset. Hope you stay and find how friendly some posters are .

I've found that the GNers who I have had disagreements with on N & P are usually thoughtful and kind on the other threads.

If people are interested in politics they are likely to be forceful and if a poster states something that others believe to be untrue, they will sometimes be piled on. If I was to write what i actually thought of BJ, I would expect to be shouted down by all his supporters, although I suspect that a few others on here would come to my defence.

I think not deleting a thread and instead asking that posts are not personal shows remarkable progress for GNHQ- thank you.
I've never understood about Christianity and heaven. If it is all about love and forgiveness then surely everyone is going there anyway? As for original sin it's a complete anathema for me.

Yes "At last" because I contacted GNHQ twice over the weekend but as I was the only one who'd reported the thread, no action could be taken.

Why don't you ask myself and/or Annie directly suziewoozie if you really want to know?

Well I rather thought I had by mentioning your names which is what I thought you wanted? How much more direct could I be?

PippaZ Tue 06-Apr-21 14:18:28

That is interesting as I had too Smileless so I wonder why they said that? I contacted them on several occasions and I do think it would have helped if they had just said what they have now said.

I doubt you will ever see yourself and some others as part of the problem. I am very aware I was as it seemed to be the only way to get them on board and stop you.

It's an interesting life on GN.

At last; thank you ZadieGransnet.

?

I rather think Zadie’s post was not addressed to anyone or any group specifically just a general ‘tone it down ‘ comment.

Matthew 5:11-12
New International Version
11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

I think there’s faults on both sides on this thread quite frankly and I hope annie and Smileless aren’t trying to suggest otherwise in their interchange?

Greeneyedgirl Tue 06-Apr-21 13:34:27

I have dipped in and out of this thread which I think it has stimulated an interesting discussion about religion and politics. I think there have been some thought provoking posts on all sides.

I’m not religious, but I love discussions about my world view, (humanist and socialist) because it gives an opportunity to expose what I think to the scrutiny of others, and I nearly always learn something. I think it’s fascinating to understand why others hold certain beliefs, so I do hope this thread isn’t deleted because of bad feeling.

Smileless2012 Tue 06-Apr-21 13:31:30

Thank you Anniesmile.

I twice asked for the thread to be deleted over the weekend but to no avail. While I agree in some ways it would be a shame because there have been some interesting and informative discussions, I think that the posts that don't fit that mould have resulted in this thread becoming extremely unpleasant.

I don't agree with what you cousin said Alegrias it isn't his or anyone's place to decree who will or will not be welcomed into heaven.

A good friend of ours, a former army chaplain and C of E minister had a poster on his bathroom door that said 'may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you've gone'grin.

"The opposite of hypocricy is not perfection, but authenticity" spot on suziewoozie.

ZadieGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 06-Apr-21 13:19:56

Hi everyone - just popping on to remind users to please refrain from personal comments. We have no issue with robust debate, but making things personal about other users doesn't really help the discussion and derails the OP. flowers

suziewoozie Tue 06-Apr-21 12:47:57

‘Hypocrisy is not falling short of a standard. Hypocrisy is covering up that you say one thing and do another. The opposite of hypocrisy is not perfection, but authenticity.’

Spot on.

I don’t understand the need of non believers to rubbish practicing Christians on this thread.

Would you do it to believers in Islam? Jews? Hindus? Jain? Jedi?

Rubbish = criticise? Oh come on. Are Christians beyond criticism? And yes, if this was a thread about specific aspects of other faiths, too damn right I’d be in there criticising aspects I didn’t agree with. See thread on the Batley Grammar thread for example. I don’t appreciate your implication quite frankly.

PippaZ Tue 06-Apr-21 12:45:44

Jesus criticised hypocrites – those who wear a mask. If you say one thing and do another Christian or none Christian that is hypocracy.

Hypocrisy is not falling short of a standard. Hypocrisy is covering up that you say one thing and do another. The opposite of hypocrisy is not perfection, but authenticity.

Alegrias1 Tue 06-Apr-21 12:39:11

OK, I'm going to shout, in case we get deleted:

WHO IS RUBBISHING YOU?

I'm a non believer, many of us are, don't tar us all with the same brush. It would be nice if you could get the chip off your shoulder.

I might regret this...

Alegrias1 Tue 06-Apr-21 12:32:50

And I've asked GNHQ not to delete it. I think it would be a pity because we're having a proper conversation.

Let's see.

PippaZ Tue 06-Apr-21 12:25:38

I have reported the whole thread. Yes, it was me. Now you can have a go about that.

One of the first things any Christian will realise is that we are all sinners without exception, Christian, pagan, atheist, moslem, Buddhist. ‘For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God’ from Romans. Christians don’t put themselves above anyone, why would they? Often they would like others to experience their joy, however, and it is joy. That is why they tell others about their faith, not to earn brownie points. Of course there are some nasty people amongst them just as there are some nasty people amongst non Christians. I think the politician likely meant well but didn’t understand that what he was doing could be taken as an insult.

Christians think I'm sinner, I don't. I think I have a lot to learn but I don't think I'm tainted by original sin just by being born.

My cousin is a lay preacher, a lovely chap who is kind and helpful to everyone he meets. While preaching at a family member's funeral he told us how sad he was that this person hadn't gone to heaven and that the rest of us weren't going either, because we didn't subscribe to the same brand of Christianity as him.

I'm afraid I laughed (quietly, it was a funeral....) but my parents were so upset. That wasn't helping others find their joy.
