The Queen and dedication to duty in the 21st Century

Does dedication to duty overwhelm any other consideration when it comes to being Head of State?

Why can a person stay in post, with all the deference that entails, when someone else is doing all the "work"?

Is anyone else worried that a 95 year old lady believes she has to keep on keeping on when many, many other monarchs have moved on in life and their countries haven't crumbled?

She has no say in anything just a expensive ornament now time for them all to step down and live happily ever after!! All got nice big estates and plenty money in the bank I’m sure!

There is a to programme about RF 1969 queen wants BBC to ban Its because they don't work just pretend we see them at leisure at races so it would spoil the mystique if we saw how ordinary they all are.

Here you can see a critique of the banned film.

What do you think?

Callestemon I meant to say What would an Elected Head of State be like? Wouldn't need lots of servants for him or her that's certain. grin

Our current Queen cannot trace her lineage back to medieval times. She is from the German branch of royalty, the Battenbergs , I believe.

It's quite sad really that she didn't retire earlier while her husband was alive. But perhaps continuing will keep her mind off her grief. She's an exceptional woman to have given herself to service for as long as she has. Someone made the comment that anyone can be king but that only happened in the dark ages and no I don't support a republic.

I feel it is somewhat ironic that a lot of ‘old ‘ people are telling another ‘old’ person that she is past it and not able to do the job she has dedicated her life to. That of supporting our nation to the best of her ability. This at a time when she is probably at her lowest ebb and needs a little support herself.

This exactly! Its not for us to say what she should or shouldn't do. I din't think she belives in the divine right of kings (or queens) but I do think that she believes that she has been consecrated to her role.

I think I've learned something from this thread.

Many people who support the monarchy just like having a Queen who was born to the position and is committed to doing it until the very end. The position might entail smiling and waving, or signing documents for the government, or actually just existing. I expect the same will be true for a king, in the future.

So we can have that, can't we? A person who can trace their lineage back to medieval monarchs, who embodies what we believe are the characteristics of the people of our nation, and who is quite good at waving and speaking to the public. (Danny Dyer springs to mind. No, stop it Alegrias)

But does that person have to be involved in government? Do they have to command utmost respect, irrespective of what they do? Do we need to have an intimate knowledge of their extended family and all their goings on? I don't think so.

I don't think she will abdicate but I do think she will hand over more and more of the duties to Charles and William. Personally, I would like to see William take the throne next as I don't think Charles has the same affection of the general public as the Queen and William have - but I know that isn't how it works.

Alegrias1 Wed 21-Apr-21 11:00:38

I see they're not allowed to retire either.

Their responsibilities differ from managing the Queen's wardrobe to helping Her Majesty bathe and attending official duties with the monarch including funerals and remembrance services.

???

What's funny Callistemon? But really it is hilarious ? having all these people helping one And ladies of the bed chamber too! Goodness Queen gets everything done for her

I bet the Queen well knows she is a popular figurehead. As such her age is irrelevant whether she is a beautiful young woman or an aged matriarch. Few celebrities have been or are such enormous personalities as Queen Elizabeth. She is therefore very important to most of her subjects whatever age she happens to be. She stands for more than mere duty.

Anniebach Wed 21-Apr-21 10:01:50

Or that fictional series The Crown

Callistemon Wed 21-Apr-21 09:58:20

I think all these historical films have a lot to answer for!
?

Anniebach Wed 21-Apr-21 09:57:23

Are you confusing Ladies of The Bed Chamber ?

Long live the Queen. Age doesn't come into it. She is already stepping back and letting Prince Charles etc, take on more duties. But she is still the Queen.

Grany Wed 21-Apr-21 09:02:30

The queen has 5 ladies in waiting none paid they are wealthy been with her for years to help with bathing and dressing.

Anniebach Wed 21-Apr-21 08:53:15
