What an absolutely ludicrous threat by Annick Girardin. I’m not a Brexiteer, but I cannot think of any way to defend this.

Seems the French don’t wasn’t to come to the table for talks.
Have backed down about the electricity but want blockades for Jersey now.

This tension is escalating.

Don't be so dramatic. It'll be resolved.

I don't think the Channel Islands are too pleased about the UK's action

Maybe we should send them some of our electricity.

At least the Nazis kept the lights on’: UK blasts France for threat to cut off Jersey’s power.

Oh dear.

Urmstongran Wed 05-May-21 20:56:43

Indeed GG13.

This latest just now from the Telegraph:

“Boris Johnson has ordered two Royal Navy vessels to head to Jersey to protect the Channel Island from an imminent blockade by French fishermen as the row over post-Brexit fishing rights escalated rapidly on Tuesday evening.

The decision to send in the offshore patrol vessels came after the Prime Minister held emergency talks with the chief minister of Jersey on Wednesday evening, with as many as 60 French boats expected to descend on its main port, St Helier.

The flotilla, made up of fishermen angered by Jersey's decision to place new restrictions on fishing licences granting access to its waters, has threatened to bring the island "to its knees".

The Jersey government is expecting the blockade to begin on Thursday morning. While the island is largely self-governed, it can request the assistance of the UK to help carry out enforcement activity.”

But they won’t do it will they?

I don’t know that. The fact she said it is ridiculous.

Urmstongran Wed 05-May-21 19:12:39

France. The Brexit gift that just keeps on giving.

Suzie, it must be exhausting.
I agree with Meryl, she has it spot on. They so want us to fail. We won’t though and they know that. They will carry out their silly threat to Jersey, just a little while. They are not all rich by far I don’t know where you get your information Suzie, you must do your research, who do you think keeps everything working and people educated. Let them flex their muscles, but it’s so silly, making enemies.

Oh dear - making it up again as you go along as to what I posted. Please try and read more carefully . The CI are a tax haven

Kamiso

You do realise that not everyone on Jersey is rich? A number of people just happened to be born there.

Almost as dim as those who ignore the fact that there are people in the south who are struggling financially. Oh! I forgot “they ALL live in oast houses and drive Ferrari’s”.

Your ignorance and bias are showing. Does the chip on your shoulder cause you pain?

Yes I do realise that - no bias at all. It’s you that’s jumping to conclusions. The CI are tax havens and help impact our tax revenue by do being. I live in Surrey and am well aware of income disparities btw.

Tax havens can look after themselves. I feel the same about the Isle of Man - cake and eat it etc

In French we say "can't have your butter and eat it".
Strange how expressions can differ.

rosie1959 Wed 05-May-21 18:37:35

Can’t really see how Jersey is freeloading on the Uk
I love Jersey although pretty naffed off with their rules and regulations at the moment for travel at the moment it’s more like trying to travel to Alcatraz than The rock

Ellianne Wed 05-May-21 18:37:09

Ok, merci.

Galaxy Wed 05-May-21 18:27:26

No I meant on here Suzie. I wasnt referring to you Ellianne, it just feels whenever there's a discussion about France there is a really weird tone.

No action, just France will be ready to retaliate is what was said.
mesures de rétorsion»

suziewoozie Wed 05-May-21 18:17:39

The CI chose not to be part of the UK with all the responsibilities, rights and obligations that would have gone with that decision. But instead it’s a tax haven with some pretty shady residents. As I said , freeloaders.

Galaxy

I dont agree with this action obviously but I find the anti French sentiment really unpleasant.

But there isn’t any actions there ?

Ellianne Wed 05-May-21 18:14:51

I am not anti French on the slightest, Galaxy, as anyone who knows my history will testify. In fact I often admire their stance on things.
Many politicians are full of rhetoric, and Girardin is just another. I actually believe from reading French reports that Macron has tried to smooth her comments over somewhat.
