I would say that they would have asked HM if it was okay before the announcement and I think it's lovely to honour two ladies that have been such a big influence on Harry's life.
When all is said and done, it's nobody else's business - those that are criticising - how would you like it if someone moaned about your choice of names for your children/grandchildren ?

I think Lillibet is a little insensitive. It is the family name or pet name for the Queen who could not pronounce Elizabeth then she was a child, Only a few could call her by that name and that included Prince Philli[

I agree. This is very personal pet name for the Queen. If they are going to shorten the name to Lili, why not just call her Lili.

Didsbury I always understood it was Princess Margaret who couldn't say Elizabeth and pronounced it Lilibet hence the nickname for the Queen.

It’s a name - I think it’s pretty as obviously they do. Nobody else’s business than theirs what they call their baby.

Lilibet is unbearably twee! It's fine in a toddler who can't pronounce Elizabeth, but for a grown woman 20 years down the line? 2 names from Harry's side of the family I notice, but no name reference to the other (supposedly much-loved) grandmother.

I think it is a beautiful name in honour of two amazing women in Harry's life.

It's not an ancestral name, it's the name the Queen gave herself because she couldn't pronounce Elizabeth in other words a nickname personal to the Queen and close family members as most nicknames are. Perhaps the Queen thought that they were intending to call baby Elizabeth, but I find it odd to use a personal nickname particularly as the trashing of the close family has been relentless including HM and her parenting skills. Maybe it's for the right reasons? Who knows. Lili is a lovely name, Lilibet? I'm not so sure.

How do you lot who say it’s offensive to Her Maj know what HMs view is? She might be thrilled for all you know. I was thrilled when one of my GDs had my pet name as a middle name I didn’t think it had been poached. I wasn’t consulted either

But, but...this is the happy thread purely about the pretty names (IMO) and their provenance.

In different circumstances it would be a wonderful choice but so hypocritical now .

You only have to check the English BMDs on line to see that there are plenty of Lillibets. The name isn’t unique to HRM. It’s an accepted first name which has been used for years.

Altogether, Lilibet has a mention 8 times in Births, Marriages and Deaths in England and Wales.

I’m with fanny and others - not as a bitch! But just mindful of how important formality and boundaries are to the Queen and how using her pet name is transgressive. Stepping over the mark. I remember how her nanny was sent away never to be spoken of or to again after she wrote a book, a very loving book, about her time with the little princesses which is how Lilibet first came to be known.
The Queen mother was even stricter on the boundaries of public and private, essential for their sanity and survival. The royals won’t be pleased but of course they won’t show it.
It’s a done deal and a little victory to the Sussex's. Everyone will smile.

My mum's name was Lili so I hope she grows to be as beautiful in mind and spirit as my mum.

It’s a lovely name but I think again H and M are being totally insensitive. The name is personal to the Queen and they have poached it. Diana as a second name was understandable and predictable. Unfortunate I think that the two brothers have got such similar names for their daughters when there are so many names to choose from Charlotte Elizabeth Diana and Lilibet Diana. Slightly odd I think.
