Lilibet

Well, they were never going to go for a ‘boring’ classic name, were they? So IMO it’s better than a lot of the tweely-hyphenated/made up/plain daft names they could have chosen.
In any case, for everyday purposes it’s going to be Lili.
I’m betting on a lot of little Lilibets being registered in the not too distant future.

By reading this thread I learnt that Lilibet is a name already in use in the US, not just exclusive to the Queen, as it is in the UK?

I am glad that baby and mum are doing well, any baby is good news.
With my supercilious head on I wonder if the baby’s name could be pronounced lie-lie. ?

I think it is a pretty name and is probably meant to remember great grannie as well as grannie. Maybe to try to heal rifts?

I have a great niece called after me and what a privilege that was. I was delighted as I’m sure HRH will be delighted to hear the new baby’s been given her pet name. A great inheritance. Lots of love and best wishes to the happy couple. May they get much joy from the safe delivery of their new baby.

Blubelle my reaction would be much the same for anyone who was semi estranged from their family and then started using, not family names, but family dimunitives or nicknames in naming a child. It appears ingratiating, as if those involved thought it would curry favour.

They may have sought and received the Queen's consent. In which case that is fine.

I have nothing against them, except their public behaviour, which they must know will be commented on it. If you make a show of parading your noble and virtuous motivations in public. You must expect your behaviour to be judged by the standards you parade. So far I am not impressed.

Reading through other comments, Monica usually nails it for me, as she has right here, particularly the last paragraph.

Perplexing! given the negative comments regarding parenting down the generations which came full circle to the Queen herself. I believe she was deeply hurt by those comments.

I know the name is the Queen's childhood nick name, lots of us do that, I've certainly got a nick names derived from actual names for my grandchildren as I did with my children when they were little ...........but in reality they are ridiculous, if we are out in public I have to revert to actual name. Lets face it such names are terms of endearment used within the family and to an outsider sound twee, and that's exactly how Lilibet sounds to my ears. However, I imagine as most people have already stated, she will be know as Lili, which is pretty. Diana was an obvious choice for a second name. Doria, which is also a pretty name would have slipped in well after Diana but maybe they didn't want to go for overload.

I'm sure she's a lovely baby, wishing her a long and happy life.

Well the queen has said she’s delighted with the birth and that came through after the name was out there so that should be the end of it

Why Lilibet if the child is going to be known as Lili?

I hope the Queen wasn’t ‘blindsided’ again by a cunningly timed announcement from the Sussex PR team.

I think the child will always be known as ‘Lili’, a bit like Harry really being Henry, but when he was born it was said ‘Henry, to be known as Harry’.

I suppose if they really wanted to abandon all the Royal connections, they could have chosen a completely different name, or simply said they were naming her ‘Lili’, with no reference to Lilibet.

I think their choice of name is bizarre. Harry has recently spoken about the genetic pain of bad parenting, starting with the Queen and Prince Philip and their treatment of Prince Charles, then Prince Charles was a terrible parent to Harry. So Harry is going to break the cycle of genetic pain and bad parenting by naming his daughter after the person who allegedly started the genetic pain cycle. Bizarre.

I think it's a pity they didn't just use Elizabeth - which has loads of short forms available for the different phases in life - (not a big fan of Elizabeth as a name TBH but better than Lilibet).

Still pleased everything apparently went ok. A new baby is lovely anyway.

Yes my dd hates her name and has been Lil since age 8 any extra letters she hates.

I’ve just read that Queen Victoria insisted that all of her granddaughters were given her own name as part of their names. Maybe the Queen has taken a leaf out of QV’s book and insisted on Elizabeth being included in some form.

If my sums are correct, 7 out of the 10 granddaughters and great-granddaughters have Elizabeth (or Lilibet) in their name. Eugenie, Savannah and Mia don’t, but Eugenie does have Victoria.

It’s surprising what can divert a body when the football’s on.

Not a fan of the RF but these are lovely names and I wish them well.

You are right Calli I would have added Doria as well. So Lilibet Diana Doria Philippa Mountbatten Windsor.

At a quick glance I thought the baby was being named after Diana Dors.

Philippa stood no chance. I imagine hell would freeze over before giving the baby a Middleton name.

I understand the Diana, but feel the first name is both presumptuous and ingratiating. Why not just make her name officially Lilli, otherwise a diminitive of a dimunitive? Now that is rather silly.
