Hello, not sure if this is the right place I looked for activism.

The new Police Bill is set to ethnically cleanse two races in Britain.
Please help to ensure this doesn't happen by helping if you can.
Even if it is just donating horse feed or shoes. Or better still making a placard and joining us in October.
Thank you.

I’m not just sounding off out of racism or spite, criminality in the traveller community is a big issue in rural areas, and most rural businesses are affected, not just a few almost all.
Caravans, Vehicles, Quad Bikes, mowers, chainsaws and any kind of power tool, in short anything they can sell easily for cash, no questions asked. Their latest enterprise is dogs, recently a site was raided and a dozen stolen pet dogs were recovered. With dogs currently so valuable, some as much as £2000 it’s well worthwhile for them.

So we have to live with the continual threat, one rule, dont confront them they will run you down to escape. Several property owners have been killed and injured and PC Harper last year as well.

I’m sorry to be at odds with you romaroot if you want the travelling community to be accepted then the remedy is in your own hands, put your own house in order.

Thank you so much, I've seen this before, but just now it made me cry.
This is totally the wrong way to go about it, but Pritti Patel knew it was a winner of votes because we are such a hated race.
The young man in the film, his comments were the same as young Romany, my son works in finance, he's independent now, but as an employee once he mentioned being a gypsy he was watched like a hawk. A cousin, school cook. She didn't have a secondary education and took Level 2 English and Maths so she could be promoted to supervisor. When she'd been in the job for about a year she let her guard down, that was it shadowed and made to feel uncomfortable.
My children bullied at school, threatened with knives. I took them out and Home educated. Luckily our youngest is very gifted and her school has such diversity she fits in.
This doesn't just affect travellers either, many sleep at the side of a road who are travelling for work. First covid and now not being able to travel my work has gone. Built up over 30 years. So much research and education and finally being accepted by the younger generation. Hoping they'll take something positive from the story to inform their parents.

This has to be the most racist comment I've ever heard. I hope it isn't deleted, and people see.
I'd be ashamed to put my name to that post when generalising about not just one race but two.

romaroot Fri 11-Jun-21 20:40:48

I wonder if you have ever heard the name Johnny Delaney?
Or how you think his parents felt, how long it took for our children to feel safe at school.
Yes, there are murderers in all walks of life.
So are all non travellers criminals and murderers then?

Luckygirl Fri 11-Jun-21 21:18:44

If I were to say that some gorjas (settled people like the majority here) commit crime, so all settled people are suspect and should put their house in order it would be seen for the nonsense that it is.

I would be the last to pretend that no Travellers commit crime; but I hope that people can see the complete illogicality of assuming that all are suspect. The ones who commit crime are visible; those who do not (the vast majority) are not visible. They are simply getting on with their lives. But sadly facing prejudice every day when their heritage is revealed.

Katie59 Fri 11-Jun-21 21:31:38

The rural community has been campaigning for many years to stop the criminality in the traveller community.
With an 80 seat majority there is no way this bill is going to get voted down, honest travellers have nothing to fear, just obey the laws that all the rest of us have to

Luckygirl Fri 11-Jun-21 21:34:54

What honest Travellers have to fear is that their rights to live their lives will be curtailed because their stopping places will be closed to them.

How would you feel if your right to live in your house was taken away because someone else who lived in a house had committed a crime?

Honest travellers have everything to fear.

Loss of income, being made homeless, a criminal record for following our culture, hefty fines for stopping.
This new law isn't just to tackle crime, that's such a naive view.
It's to ethnically cleanse two races.
Dressing it up however you want to won't change the fact that this gov are determined to stop our rights, all of us.

I'd like crime to be tackled by the Police, whoever the criminals are, and you don't do this by racial discrimination and laws to punish law abiding citizens.

25Avalon Sat 12-Jun-21 12:40:42

Why are the emotive words ‘ethic cleansing being used. Look it up and see what ethnic cleansing really is, and this new law is not ethnic cleansing. Go to Serbia and learn what it really is.

What is happening is that travellers who are not a race, although true Romany Gypsies are, will no longer be able to stay for weeks, on village greens, cricket grounds, farmers fields etc whilst civil proceedings take place, but will now be moved on by the police. Have you seen the huge boulders erected everywhere to keep travellers off private property as a consequence because of the damage frequently caused? We have a travellers camp where the resident law abiding travellers were intimidated and bullied by other non law abiding travellers. We don’t want the latter and if the new law stops it I am all in favour.

Sago Sat 12-Jun-21 13:41:54

This is from our local neighbourhood watch Facebook page.

An update on the caravan residents on chants Ave north field. They’re demanding £6,000 off the cricket club who’s ground they’re taking up. And threatening them saying that if they don’t get the money, they’ll burgle all the houses round here & then bring 20 more vans. They’ve also been into the sports club and poo’ed on the floor. And cut open the wire gate from the sports club car park on to the field. Our neighbours just spoken to the sports club & this is what they’ve said. The police apparently can’t do anything. This is disgusting. So the police won’t intervene now until we all get burgled ?! What can we do people??

Luckygirl Sat 12-Jun-21 14:24:39

But the police CAN do something. Demanding money with menaces is a criminal offence. Complain to the local police and if they do not take action, then complain about them.

Law-abiding Travellers would be only too happy to see such criminals brought to justice.

Chestnut Sat 12-Jun-21 15:13:30

The Police are completely ineffective unless they have absolute proof against someone, which is video/audio evidence or whatever. And I suppose even then they have to abide by the law of the land as to how they deal with them. This isn't the 1970s of Life on Mars so they have to walk on eggshells.
Victims need to whip out their smartphones and video film the threats (or record the audio) otherwise there is no proof. Don't be caught without it handy ready to record.

Sago Sat 12-Jun-21 15:59:13

This is from our local paper.
People are too frightened to challenge or video these people..

No helpful suggestions from Alegrias1? Or maybe just watching and waiting to report someone for being racist?

Alegrias1 Sat 12-Jun-21 16:41:14

Oh no, such wit!

How will I be able to survive the shame of Chestnut making fun of me. sad

I shall probably turn to drink.

romaroot Sat 12-Jun-21 16:57:40

Chestnut there are racist comments on here.
and still coming.
My question is the same as before, what has the behaviour of these people got to do with travellers?
The answer is nothing, because it's as alien to us as it is to you.
What has the crime from non traveller society got to do with you? I take it you are a law abiding citizen, so I'd say nothing.

Now, how would you feel if laws were being brought in that said you were responsible, and the rest of society agreed with this.
So, because you are one of these non travellers the laws will mean that to live in your home makes you a criminal and this law says you can be fined, your home taken away and imprisoned.
I think you'd think the world had gone mad, that's where we are atm.

romaroot Sat 12-Jun-21 17:02:25

Hull are very anti traveller, no stopping places, sites and a recently hopefully suspended councillor who was suggesting people went home and made petrol bombs.
These travellers included children, I'm glad they finally found somewhere to stop.
Provision is absolutely ridiculous, what do people expect.
People can't just float in thin air.

25Avalon Sat 12-Jun-21 17:21:57

The law will stop illegal parking on private and community owned land without having to spend weeks and tax payers money to be enforced.

Chestnut Sat 12-Jun-21 17:31:46

romaroot I have not suggested you or your family are in any way responsible for criminal activities and agree it must be awful to be falsely linked with these horrible people.
However, you say These travellers included children, I'm glad they finally found somewhere to stop. Provision is absolutely ridiculous, what do people expect.
That sounds as if you are defending them? It's one thing to stop and park up, and quite another to threaten the locals and indulge in criminal behaviour. People should not have to expect that. I'm disappointed if you believe that kind of behaviour is justified after all you've been saying.

romaroot Sat 12-Jun-21 17:41:06

I am most definitely defending them, because they have no choice.
I don't defend the mess one little bit as it is totally at odds with our culture.
I wasn't specifically talking about the picture in the article or the people, I don't know them.
But I know that families with children are being targeted by society and new gov laws.
Where are we to go? In houses, emergency accommodation. We don't live in houses if we want to keep our culture, many who did had no choice, either no site provision or not enough money to buy their own land/ and of course pressure from Nimby's.

We are a race, well 2 distinct races actually.
Romany Gypsy, and Irish Travellers, both have their own language, social norms, religion, the usual things that determine race.

We have been ethnically cleansed by gov since we arrived, please don't tell me that 30 years of study and I don't know what ethnic cleansing is.

Trespass isn't a crime at the present, so no laws have been broken here, unless private property. It's not illegal for us to stop on public land.
In fact all are traditional stopping places are still there, not used for anything, but of course fenced off so we can't use it.

Of course I don't condone criminal activity and anti social behaviour but I don't know anyone who has done anything like this. The majority of us are law abiding citizens who integrate with the rest of society well.

Chestnut Sat 12-Jun-21 17:55:13

romaroot They have a choice about whether to threaten and frighten locals and be antisocial (see what Sago said). Shocking behaviour. It seems you are defending the very criminals you have been saying are in the wrong. These people who you know nothing about and have no connection to.

romaroot Sat 12-Jun-21 18:01:23

I've done nothing to defend their behaviour at all, and think they should be dealt with accordingly as to the crimes committed.
I did state I wasn't specifically talking about that case, but where do you expect them to go? They can't just suspend in mid air.
It's ok to say somewhere else, but somewhere else doesn't want us either.
I repeat there is no choice for these people.
There is a choice to take up crime, and this should be dealt with by the Police.

25Avalon Sat 12-Jun-21 18:11:58

My father was on his way home from work. A lorry hurtled round the bend, hit the bank and toppled over on to my father’s car. My father and workmate helped get the lorry off as they were frightened the petrol tank might go up in flames. The lorry was being driven by 2 travellers who told my father to follow them back to their camp. It was down a cart track to a field where several caravans were parked. When dad got out a dozen men appeared with cudgels and threatened him so dad got back in his car and drove away. He reported it to the police but when they got there all the travellers and caravans had disappeared. Dad had to pay towards his own repairs and next year his insurance premium had gone up. Plenty of others can tell similar tales.

Why should you be able to drive around and park anywhere you please without a thought for those who own the land.

Ethnic cleansing involves a degree of violence and a plan to wipe out a whole race as Hitler did and as happened in Serbia where people were rounded up taken out and shot. That is not happening here. Travellers are being asked to respect other people’s property. The new law will be on the side of the lawful land owners.

Chestnut Sat 12-Jun-21 18:16:23

romaroot I sincerely wish there were more places for them to stop, and I'm sure there would be more sympathy and understanding from the local communities if they didn't behave in such an awful way, which does them no favours! The travellers in that article that is.
Presumably the answer is to have a lot more registered sites, but is that what you want?
