How fantastic does this woman look for 70 yrs of age? She's slim and extremely stylish, great hair as well and she wears stilettos! She's still working as a professor of English and she's the first lady of America. Not sure about the jacket with LOVE emblazoned on the back though. Apart from that my hat is off to you Jill! You're an example to us all.

Agree Fanny slimness, youthfulness, fitness and extremely high heels are always mentioned and admired!

Maw She's extremely fit with a very strong core (whatever that is...)
I notice when she's kneeling down in heels, holding a child and then just stands back up again! ?

Do we have one (a core) buried deep down somewhere?
In my case more like an apple core ! ? grin

Mary Beard is a star for her knowledge, not for her dress sense. I admire her for wearing what she likes and am disappointed that other women are criticising her for it. I have zero interest in the outfits of anyone - famous or otherwise - I think its incredibly shallow that we are STILL talking about women's outfits in the 21st century! Can we PLEASE celebrate women such as Jill Biden and Mary Beard for their achievements and not what they look like!

Totally agree. When I was at school we had a teacher who looked very much like Mary Beard. She'd sweep in and then manage to make the most ardent maths haters, love the subject. Everyone loved her. Who cared what she looked like? We knew she was our favourite teacher and even now when old school chums have a get together we all say she was our our fave.

Oh I agree about the vertiginous heels FannyC - even Duchess of Cambridge (who IMO is plenty tall enough) and of course Melania Trump. My heart was often in my mouth when I saw the D of C coming down eg aircraft steps in heels carrying whichever baby or toddler she had and not holding on ! shock

Fashion and high heels apart what a breath of fresh air after her predecessor.

FannyCornforth Mon 14-Jun-21 08:39:46

MawB and Lucca that's the point that I was trying (and failing by the look of things) to make early doors.

It's just the admiration (even fetishism) of thinness that I object too.
And I don't think that there is anything special about wearing high heels!

MawBe Mon 14-Jun-21 08:30:47

I agree that we should celebrate people for their achievements not their clothes. However I’m sorry but I do like clothes and fashion and like to occasionally discuss what I think of a person’s outfit. Doesn’t mean I think any more or less of them
Is entirely agree Lucca they are not mutually exclusive.

Eg angela Merkel I admire for the position she has risen to but find her outfits very uninspiring.
Judi Dench though I admire as an actress and I love her style.
Sorry I am rambling.

Jill Biden didn’t look quite as smart in the photos of them meeting the Queen at Windsor before having tea.

Her jacket looked a bit snug, being fastened up made it ‘pull’ rather.

Joe looked very dapper though.

The Queen looked dressed appropriately for hosting a tea party for a President.

Sodapop you are right. Ursula VDL was apparently deployed to the European Commission by an exasperated Angela Merkel! She does look smart but please don’t add ‘for her age’!

I think Ursula Von Der Leyen (not sure if that is how you spell it) looked great as well. She's in her 60s, doing a very high pressure job, was a doctor before she became a politician.

I wholly agree, smart, assured,business-like, unassuming. She looked as if she was a professional very measured. Both she and her husband are Dr's but do we know it she never insists on the Dr Leyden title and she has about 5 of a family. she must be one organised woman.

Her main job is to keep Joe from going off plot.

I thought that is what most women do with their OHs! How many men in their late 70's would be capable physically or mentally to do the job of President? He also manages his stutter remarkably well although of course, there are always people ready to make fun when he has a slip. I sometimes think we live in a pretty vile world. who on earth would choose to be in the public eye? I certainly wouldn't!

My other brother got the long eyelashes!

Something has gone wrong in the allocations department. We should make a complaint.

A couple of children's books by her too.

Imo this is a woman who had real style in her older years.
And I do realise she’s not to everyone’s taste ? www.theguardian.com/global/2015/jul/19/iris-apfel-interview-designer-fashion-film

New Zealand’s Prime Minister has a very supportive husband actually.

Found it! Yes I have noticed there seems to be alot of pink scalp shining through so you might be on to something.

Off topic but I noticed Prince Charles making a speech yesterday and he seems to have hung on to his hair quite well for a man who started losing it quite young if I remember correctly. He's certainly hanging on to it more than William.

Perhaps Charles has hung on to his hair since he and Diana divorced, and subsequently married Camilla, he is probably just happier and less stress was good for his hair.

Having said that, with all that’s happened lately, he will probably soon be bald.
