How fantastic does this woman look for 70 yrs of age? She's slim and extremely stylish, great hair as well and she wears stilettos! She's still working as a professor of English and she's the first lady of America. Not sure about the jacket with LOVE emblazoned on the back though. Apart from that my hat is off to you Jill! You're an example to us all.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with looking good at any age, compliments always welcome.

Jill Biden looks fabulous.

Carrie Johnson’s red dress is by L K Bennet a brilliant British Fashion Store, the mustard one is available for £8 a day to hire from the same online wardrobe as her wedding dress.

As an aside I am never giving up my heels whilst I am able to walk elegantly in them.

I really like words FannyCornforth I'm pretty sure I'm right about this one but I stand to be corrected (just in case...) ?

I like to see photos of Jill Biden she is more of a 'model'
dresser to me than any of the 'professional 'models. She wears age appropriate clothes and I always admire how 'right' she
looks, it is inspiring. I also admire her for her career but that is not so visible;

Women in power and politics are judged on the way they look as much as men can be , but grey suits are not very interesting.
I'm always glad to see a well dressed female politician in a suit
even if its pink! If they turned out like Carrie Johnson I'd be
mega less impressed and worried.

"age appropriate clothes" OM actual G

Thanks Lizzie, that's really interesting.
I thought that it was derived from 'visage'

Alegrias1 Fri 11-Jun-21 12:41:28

Hear hear Fanny!

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Jun-21 12:40:31

It's the lack of nuance that gets to me.
It's all 'Pick a side! Pick a side!'

lizzypopbottle Fri 11-Jun-21 12:40:18

Fizzog (in case you didn't know, it's short for physiognomy - facial features or expression) was a very popular term for the face in my youth in Liverpool.

Apologies to all Grannies who already know how to suck eggs!

Alegrias1 Fri 11-Jun-21 12:36:47

How sad that admiring is being taken to mean judging.
That what is meant as a compliment is construed as a criticism.

Well you've misunderstood the thread completely.

Would you like me to explain?

Jabberwok Fri 11-Jun-21 12:33:26

I used to use that word, but I haven't for many years. Would it still be allowed nowadays?

Mamgujane Fri 11-Jun-21 12:26:57

FannyCornforth - long time since I’ve heard anyone but me use the word fizzog!!

Jabberwok Fri 11-Jun-21 12:26:04

Well Wilfred looked good especially his hair, without any help whatsoever.

FannyCornforth Fri 11-Jun-21 12:24:38

Just to clarify
I have nothing against commenting on looks at all.
I do it myself all of the time.
I love clothes, jewellery and makeup.

I like receiving compliments about certain aspects of my appearance, and I like giving compliments even more.

What I do not like however, is the importance placed upon thinness.
I used my own experience to illustrate my views, and provide some background of why I hold such strong opinions.

If you require further insight into the matter, take a look at 'Fat is Feminist Issue' by Susie Orbach.
It's about 30 years old, so pre-dates bloody 'woke'.

muse Fri 11-Jun-21 12:15:32

I was going to comment length at after reading the opening but have read what others think first: Well said MawBe. I was a primary deputy head and liked the comments from pupils and staff.

Admiring someone's looks doesn't mean you are dismissing other aspects about that person. We all don't know all about those we give a compliment to anyway.

Kate Middleton and Jill Biden will hold seminar on female empowerment today.

There are many things to admire Dr Jill Biden for; but her 'slimness' and ability to wear stiletto heels are not two of them!

Have to agree with that FannyCornforth. But in balance I hope she enjoys both.

Talullah Fri 11-Jun-21 12:11:33

Mary Beard is a world apart. Brilliant woman. Subjected to vile trolling online. In the end she actually befriended some of them and helped one of the worst by writing job recommendations and they lunch together. She makes excellent points about wanting to help him so these past Tweets don't come back to haunt him when he is wanting to work. Interesting article.

As for Jill Biden, she's clearly an excellent First Lady and her achievements are many.

And she is indeed very glamorous. And I think it's OK to say that.

Her slenderness and ability to wear high heels suggest someone in good health who takes care of herself which is worthy of a little admiration surely.

nope. I could never wear even low heels, even as a teenager, certainly could never have worn stilletos even before I trashed my knees rough walking my dogs...and anybody who thinks that makes me less admirable can shove it

Kim19 Fri 11-Jun-21 12:03:31

I found Jill Biden decidedly good on the eye and totally appropriate for the somewhat 'non role' she is playing in current proceedings. Incidentally, why do we think partners are in peripheral attendance in these heady business meetings at all?

I was about to say the same.....we don't admore her husband because he is a hunk or looking good for his age.

NanKate Fri 11-Jun-21 12:00:35

Your comments at 10.51 MawBe excellent ?

I like President Biden’s silky suits, and if I am allowed to say it, his slimness. My DH is slim like that and can eat what he likes, so unfair.

Callistemon Fri 11-Jun-21 11:47:46

Angela Merkel's husband (can't recall his surname, but not Merkel as that was her first husband's name and she retained it)

You didn't read my post coastalgran
wink

LOVE her!

Jill Biden does looks great, the army of stylists that follow FLOTUS around have done their job well! As for her slimness, a word of encouragement to other well rounded Grannies out there....when I was talking to my daughter about dieting recently my little grandson Daniel turned round and said "I don't want you to lose weight, you can't cuddle a skinny Granny". Out of the mouths of babes....?
