Purpose of the G7 Summit 2021

I thought I'd start a thread that was about the actual business of the Summit, i.e. why its happening and what the purpose is. To be honest, I'm not so clear myself but a quick Google search suggests they'll be talking about the environment, future pandemic responses, vaccines and cryptocurrencies.

Shoes, toddlers and local sausages can be talked about on other threads ?

Wasn’t the Eden Project meant to be a way of creating jobs in the SW due to the decline of fishing there? It’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go to.

Just as an aside.

As a Cornishman it's lovely to see Johnson showing the world leaders around the massively EU funded Eden Project. I wonder if George Eustice will be joining them from his family's massively EU funded farm before they all fly home via the massively EU funded Newquay Airport?

“In the NY Times our Prime Minister is said to be 'venal', slapdash and incompetent.

"A venal person is willing to behave in a way that is not honest or moral in exchange for money" (Cambridge dictionary)”

I was watching CNN when they broadcast Johnson’s “welcome speech” to the G7.

The comment by CNN.

“Well, that was toe curlingly embarrassing”

Kali2 Fri 11-Jun-21 20:01:20

'levelling up' comment was so hypocritical and disingenuous, in the extreme. Tories have constantly cut services which would have helped in that direction.

Jill Biden and the Duchess of Cambridge have just held a press conference about educating women in the developing world.

Bit awkward as the U.K. is the only country cutting aid towards this project.

We are still donating though, not as though we have stopped altogether. You can always donate extra from your pocket if you wish, many people do, including myself. There are different types of aid and we always step up to the mark. Much of the humanitarian aid will be spent on countries at most risk of famine, we donated about 1.3 billion dollars last year, and the Government are prioritising the most vulnerable countries for aid. Bye.

Wonder how many people realise how much EU funding the Eden Project has had. It irritated me that Johnson has just used his address to the other G7 members to slip in a few government soundbites.eg Build Back Better. There was another sound bite slipped in as well, levelling up I think it was.

As a 'local 'I can assure you the runway at NQY had already been in use for 'long hauls' prior to arrival of AF1.
An increase in security was obvious.

I was looking at a photo of leaders and doing a count - there are more than 7. So upon investigation I see there are representatives from the EU, both the European Commission President and European Council President.

I have some learning to do on EU roles. If France, Germany and Italy are part of the G7, are they also represented by EU? I'm so confused....

Let Google be your friend:

"The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal club of wealthy "liberal democracies" consisting of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.[1] The heads of government of the member states, as well as the representatives of the European Union, meet at the annual G7 Summit.

As of 2018, the G7 represents 58% of the global net wealth ($317 trillion),[2] more than 46% of the global gross domestic product (GDP) based on nominal values, and more than 32% of the global GDP based on purchasing power parity. The seven countries involved are also the largest IMF-advanced economies in the world."

The G7 is an informal club, not a formal arrangement with legal contracts, treaties and a constitution, etc.

OMG! It's a re-run of 1973. I remember so well the claims that the British banger and Cheddar would be forbidden. Pathetic!

I don’t know Alegrias1 sausages could be on the agenda with von der Leyden there ?

What's that supposed to mean?

Kali2 Fri 11-Jun-21 17:26:48

There are many people so much more slappable than him, for sure.

But truly, I ao agre maddyone- this is just not the way to do it (although perhaps... if I could fish slap Farage, I'd be very tempted- in my dreams).

maddyone Fri 11-Jun-21 17:08:01

Actually he irritates me intensely but I’d draw the line at slapping him, I’m not the violent kind grin

Ah, Macron Kali .....he can always be relied on to try and rubbish anything about the UK.?
He’s not having a good time in France lately so a bit of indignation and finger pointing may distract the public there from wanting to slap him.

Someone tried to slap Macron yesterday didn’t they? I doubt anyone will get near enough to slap him at the G7.

lemongrove Fri 11-Jun-21 17:05:00

We are hosting the G7 so have to shell out money on doing so,
As do any other country when it’s their turn.

It seems to be going well. However there is nothing special about our relationship with the USA and I wish we would stop deluding ourselves that there is one.

We are a friend and ally in the same way many other countries are and we are not even at the forefront of that group.

Appearances don't tell the whole story. However elegant and confident the First USA couple looked- and all the smiles- the main story is that the US, via Biden, has issued a demarche to the UK, which is a serious diplomatic request or warning, not to jeopardise the Belfast Agreement by continuing to break the NI protocol.

The UK press don’t seem to be reporting this at the moment (for some strange reason ;) ).

France has vetoed any re-opening of the deal Johnson signed up to.

The EU countries are considering trade sanctions if we keep breaking our agreement.

People are not going to put up with Johnson messing around any more, this is now crystal clear.

Alegrias1 Fri 11-Jun-21 16:05:51

I just started the thread UG, I don't own it smile

Just no stilettos and babies, please grin

Urmstongran Fri 11-Jun-21 16:00:04

I fancy the posh BBQ on the beach tomorrow evening!

Sorry Alegrias back to the serious stuff. I’m not sure that these G7 summits do any good really. A nice bit of upmarket networking. The UK has already had to splash out more than £7mil to extend the runway at Newquay airport to facilitate Air Force One for Biden. Will it ever be used again or has this just been a colossal waste of money?

These nations pin their green credentials to their lapels. They all talk the talk. But does promising stuff actually deliver, down the line? I’m not sure whether they have to sign up to anything and how binding it actually is.

The Royal Family are out in force. HMTQ arrives tomorrow. I think that’s a first at these summits? Soft power.

Dinahmo

This arrived in my inbox so I'm trying to share it with you all. It is beautiful so I hope that you can see it.

Swarms of 300 illuminated drones forming iconic animals have descended on Cornwall demanding the G7 world leaders #ActNow to protect the planet.

Watch, share, sign >> act.gp/3x7A49D <<
#ClimateLeadersAct

That is beautiful Dinahmo. Thank you.

Spoilt only by the stupid jet at the end, though I guess it was part of the message. Sometimes less is more, no need to overdo it.
