Should Nicola Sturgeon have discouraged Scottish Football fans without tickets from travelling to London?

26 arrests last night, flares being let off and general chaos in the West End. Only it didn't seem so long ago that she was asking people from England not to travel to Scotland.

Its interesting to me though Lucca that people are so ill-informed about Scottish politics and independence and yet still feel that their view is worth sharing with all and sundry.

Free speech, I suppose.

No ‘suppose’ about it.

Here’s an idea! We rebuild Hadrian’s Wall ( quickly...using fast dry cement/ concrete) man it with small cannons and target any trains / coaches coming this way ( or either way) ? and then borrow a Game Of Thrones dragon to mop up any stragglers.Where there’s a will there’s a way.

I was due to visit Dundee this weekend, we cancelled when we saw the stats. Fortunately we’d booked via booking.com and didn’t have to pay. If those from NW England were banned from Scotland NS should have closed off Dundee.

There have been travel bans in place between Scotland and England for much of the pandemic Sue. Same as there have been between Wales and England. For a while there were travel bans within Scotland, and I couldn't travel to my nearest city because it is outside my Local Council Area. But I know some who carried on anyway.

Most people will obey the rules but there will always be a minority who don't and this time, the minority were a bunch of very visible football fans.

So I disagree that it makes her look daft.

SueDonim Tue 22-Jun-21 13:41:54

If NS can’t stop the planes & trains then why even make a silly rule like that? She makes herself look daft. Though it’s all good cover for the story that the SQA in which she has the utmost confidence is now to be disbanded.

She doesn't give a rats about England she only cares about getting as much money out of Westninster before they go Independent after the next referendum. Heaven knows what they will try to do with Balmoral. I hope they wait til the Queen has gone, which I hope will be another 10 years at least.

1) Its our money too

2) The Queen will still be HoS. I've explained that about 147 times.

3) The Queen owns Balmoral personally so she can still come to her wee house in the country as often as she likes

Your use of the word "they" is very telling, don't you think?

Ridiculous comment about Balmoral. Is poster implying the Scots would steal it ??

Thanks for being patient enough to explain yet again Alegrias!

Of course she should but She only does what she wants to do and as one of the other say you can’t fix “ Stupid “

What an unpleasant comment. She did discourage them by the way. As someone else has said how would you suggest she actually stopped them ? In the same way that Johnson has stopped people travelling in and out of the UK since March 2020 ?

No it wasn't for Nicola to stop fans travelling, it was Johnson to stop them entering England, after all Nicola stopped people from entering Scotland including those from England, even stopped Trumped for entering. Their country, their rules, our country our rules except wen don't have any.

It’s the double standards that are infuriating, Alegrias. How can football fans be allowed to travel to London but other Scots are banned from going to Manchester? Yet no one is banned from going to Dundee, whose rates are as high as Manchester. ?‍♀️

I'm not disagreeing with that SueDonim. I said somewhere else that I think that the Manchester / Salford travel ban is weird and I don't know why they've done it. I hope its rescinded. I also don't think accusing Andy Burnham of playing politics is fair at all.

But I get mightily p***ed off with all the "She hates the English" carping and the complaining that she didn't stop the trains and planes. I mean, really?

Well said Brownnow1564!

PS Hadrian’s Wall is still there, though it needs a bit of TLC. grin

FGS, can we have Hadrian's Wall back? Or even Antonine's Wall, I'd give up Dumfries and Galloway if we just didn't have to live with this constant victimisation.

Its our own country they've travelled in, but not for much longer I hope. Unlike the five plane loads of supporters of English teams who took the Delta variant to Portugal during the rather convenient 3 week Green List window that covered the time the football was being played there,

And now some Scotland fans who went to a London on a coach have tested positive for Covid. hmm

Callistemon Tue 22-Jun-21 12:26:41

With all the effort people have put in over the past 18 months to stay safe and to help protect others why this football competition has been allowed is beyond belief.

It was UEFA which made the decision the Euros could go ahead all over Europe, presumably after taking advice from scientists and politicians etc.
It was not just the leaders in this country ie Johnson, Sturgeon and Drakeford.

It could all get worse as the final will be held at Wembley.

If VIPs, officials and politicians from other countries are to be let into the UK without quarantining, as has been suggested, then I can see that public trust will be eroded and people will just do what they want.

Callistemon Tue 22-Jun-21 12:18:32

James I of Scotland tried to ban football BTW SJV07 . He got assassinated. These two events may be linked, who knows? grin

Stop it, stop it, just spluttered my coffee down my nice clean football shirt ???

Kim19 Tue 22-Jun-21 12:16:28

I remember being taught not to threaten children with an action you are not prepared/able to carry out. Very interested in the implementation and management of NS new rule/law

4allweknow Tue 22-Jun-21 12:16:03

20000 fans allowed to travel, 20000 votes! Some of the fans will probably have travelled to London from Dundee, an area with higher Covid rates than Manchester. The Scotland held games will attract fans from all over, Dundee included. Considering how focused NS is being on Manchester there is a big gap in her reasoning in stopping people travelling from Manchester to Scotland yet allows locals to travel about Scotland and to London where there would be fans from Manchester and Dundee supporting the teams. It's all to do with votes I'm afraid. Don't upset the fans by banning the competition. It's not just the crowd at the games, there is all the revelry usually involving alcohol that creates risks. With all the effort people have put in over the past 18 months to stay safe and to help protect others why this football competition has been allowed is beyond belief.

Aepgirl Tue 22-Jun-21 12:14:14

Football fans/players are a law unto themselves. Professional Football has been far less affected by lockdown etc than any other sport yet the teams still can’t play be the rules. They ‘cuddle’ each other, shout out loud and spit - all the things we are asked not to do.

Yammy Tue 22-Jun-21 11:49:11

Aveline

I sometimes think we live in a different Scotland from you Alegrias. The Scots fans' behaviour was execrable. This was entirely predictable and every effort should have been made to prevent their travelling.
So I'm complaining about Nicola who sat on a fence and barely bleated about the travelling fans and the fans themselves who behaved abominably.
All for a goalless draw which will somehow have transmuted to a marvellous victory up here.

Thank you Aveline for giving us a different point of view to many Scots.
Football hooligans whatever nation should not be tolerated. She should offer to pay for all the mess and damage for cleaning up and replanting in London.
Imagine if a load of Sassenachs had trashed Princes Street gardens on Hogmany and done unmentionables around the Scots monument. She closes her ears and eyes to what she does not want to know or act on.

As for Siddique Khan why should he control Scots hooligans he was obeying Covid rules and made no allowances for large gatherings.
Now today we have the furore of English Soccer players being sent into quarantine for being in contact with a Scots who has tested positive, what about his teammates and manager whom he cuddled. I don't like soccer but I think everything should be fair for both sides. Give me a good scrum at Murrayfield for the Calcutta cup anytime

She has an agenda. How come she stopped trains going to other parts of the country but not london.

She stopped trains?

Did I miss that?

Get your facts right.

Tiggersuki Tue 22-Jun-21 11:39:23

While I agree with much of what has been said the Scottish fans were able to travel into England and from quite a high Covid area without clearly taking personal responsibility. I also saw photos in the paper of the mass unmasked at Ascot which reminded me of the start of things last year with Cheltenham going ahead....all of these money makers.
We truly should only relax rules anywhere in the UK when daily numbers are below 1000, NOT 10,000 as it is. We do have to accept the low death numbers if we wish to move on. Surely people should be prosecuted and fined for flagrant rule breaking?
