The former Metropolitan police chief John Stevens has disclosed that he questioned Prince Charles over allegations that he had plotted to kill Diana, Princess of Wales.

Charles was interviewed as a witness in 2005, during a three-year investigation into Diana’s death in a Paris car crash in 1997, the Daily Mail reported.

This is probably the most interesting thing that I shall read today???

Alegrias1 Mon 21-Jun-21 09:02:54

The other day I had to swerve out of the way of a woman who stepped into the road in front of me. She was wearing a hat. Ended up with a flat tyre where I hit a kerb.

I think the RF are out to get me. AIBU?

MawBe Mon 21-Jun-21 09:05:23

The hat is the key Alegrias - royal women always seem to wear hats.

foxie48 Mon 21-Jun-21 09:10:42

Royals don't wear sear belts, it interferes with their waving and creases their clothes. Fact.

MawBe Mon 21-Jun-21 09:13:29

Dodi was not a Royal, and escaping the paparazzi at speed is not the same as “waving to the crowds” - and Royals eg driving themselves on “ordinary”:journeys are generally seen to belt up.
So not fact

Are you sure Foxie48? Don’t they have to obey the laws of the land? After his accident the police threatened to take away PP’s driving licence so he surrendered it.

Alegrias1 Mon 21-Jun-21 09:18:05

Royals get to decide which laws they abide by, remember?

Sparklefizz Mon 21-Jun-21 09:22:57

The only person in the car who was wearing a seat belt survived.

lemsip Mon 21-Jun-21 09:24:34

MawBe Well of course it was . Why do you think it was banned by the UK.

25Avalon Mon 21-Jun-21 09:30:22

They were in France, of course. Are the rules re seat belts, especially for rear seat passengers, the same there?

JaneJudge Mon 21-Jun-21 09:36:26

was the dog ok?

Peasblossom Mon 21-Jun-21 09:37:41

Very high profile people eg Heads of State, rarely wear seat belts on official duties. Not because of waving and creased clothes ? but because security need to get them out of the car quickly or to get them to dive and be covered by the security officer.

It was also banned because Wright was still bound by the Official Secrets Act which he, unlike for instance the wonderful code breakers at Bletchley Park, chose to ignore.

I wish people would remember two simple but key facts- the driver of Diana and Dodi’s car was over the limit and they were not wearing seat belts.
How could Prince Philip or the U.K. security services possibly have second-guessed such a monumentally stupid course of action when they could just as easily have ducked out of sight and stayed in the Ritz overnight?

Yes, all true, but conspiracy theories are so much more interesting than facts, MawBe

Reading Diana’s letter you can see how paranoid she was becoming, a paranoia fed by Martin Bashir. If she really thought “they” were going to stage a car crash to kill her why on earth didn’t she have a seat belt on?

Precisely.

Callistemon Mon 21-Jun-21 10:01:02

absent

She and Dodi al Fayed suddenly and unpredictably decided to leave their hotel late at night. They were safe there, albeit surrounded by paparazzi outside the hotel. Their driver was, apparently, under the influence and driving at a high speed too fast for the route. She was not wearing a seatbelt. Others – Secret Service, Duke of Edinburgh, ex-husband, James Bond, Paddington Bear – didn't have to do a thing.

?

It was a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Anniebach Mon 21-Jun-21 10:04:29

There was a photograph published at the time, taken by a Papp, Diana was in the back seat of the car and had turn to look
at the photographs following them.

Leaving the Ritz by the back entrance late at night cannot be
classed ‘an official duty’, and she wasn’t doing any official duties

They were speeding through Paris at 1 am, not sure they were waving at anyone.

Diana’s brother in law was questioned at the inquest, it was claimed he had flown to Paris , taken over the British Embassy,
took control of the police, and the hospital .

Yes I'm sure the French police just let random foreigners waltz in and take over.

When we heard Diana had died my dh said ‘that’s convenient for Prince Charles’. ?

Well that proves it doesn't it. I mean if your husband thinks it's convenient it proves ................ well not sure what it proves.

25Avalon Mon 21-Jun-21 10:55:05

It wasn’t actually that convenient for Prince Charles. The adoration and adulation for Diana from the general public was such that the RF had to back down on protocol, and it took years to get Camilla anywhere near acceptable. At least he did the decent thing in flying out to accompany her body home.

theworriedwell Mon 21-Jun-21 11:26:33

It wasn't convenient and people must think he is a total monster if they really think he would do that to his children. He has always come across as a thoughtful and compassionate man, I know people can act out of character but this would have been cold and calculated so I don't think he would have anything to worry about with a police interview.

People talk like he was a suspect but the police talked to him as they would to anyone close to try and find out what they knew about what was in her mind.

Calendargirl Mon 21-Jun-21 11:29:43

How anyone can imagine that Charles would be involved in Diana’s death beats me. As the father of their two sons, it is unthinkable that he would do anything to leave his much loved children motherless, no matter what had gone on between them in their marriage.

Totally agree with your comment Calendargirl

Anniebach Mon 21-Jun-21 11:59:11

People don’t believe Charles wasn’t involved with Camilla when he married Diana , he said he wasn’t , Diana said he was,

I was actually joking in general about the Royals! Obviously missed the mark by a long way.
