With Billboards across the country. What do you think?

£14,186 have already been raised of £30,000 target. With over 600 supporters.

Two updates.
Thank you to everyone who has helped us raise so much so quickly.

Republic has been able to book 12 billboards up and down the country, with more to come.

This will be one design (to be confirmed) that will be repeated in Aberdeen, Paisley and Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, the Potteries, Birmingham and Portsmouth.

We'll then work on additional designs to go up in Wales, London and other parts of England and Scotland.

The more we raise, the more billboards go up!

I think it's time for a debate, instead of hereditary queen king. We could choose who we want to be our Head of State

In fact, if I saw one of your hoardings I’d deface it That's a bit strong.
Republicans have every right to promote their cause, although I think the timing may not be right.

I think I would be tempted to felt pen a bit of graffiti on one, or, if there are faces, draw moustaches.
We don’t need billboards ( Bill Stickers will be prosecuted....
Poor old Bill, nobody likes him.)

Am a republican at heart but think the Queen has done a good job, and think Charles will too. After that, who knows? The public like the monarchy so can’t see much changing for years and years.

The public ‘like’ what they are conditioned to like, quite frankly. I hope campaigns like this open a few more eyes .

Thank you for making me aware of this OP. I’ve donated

The monarch is a stable HoS - if there was an elected HoS the best people are likely not to want the job or think they are not good enough for it - or maybe be like David Attenborough and be far too busy to want to stop their real passion and deal with politicians. How long a period would they serve would be a big question too.
Parliament should decide most of the laws of the country and knows it is on a limited time - a monarch can do great service for a country and keeps out of open conflict with politicians or other HoS.
I have never given the question much thought but if the question did arise I think on balance I quite like our system so would vote for the status quo.

What has the Queen done for you nothing her job is to do what the PM asks she is on governmentside not the for the people. When do you hear from her once a year in a speech written for her read from an autocue.

Her and her family waited on hand and foot and the finest chefs. They have various houses, modes of transport royal train helicopters, cars, at their disposal plenty of time to spare, spending public money every day of every week costing a fortune. The train has private quarters, an ordinary train, not enough leg room, suppose 1st class same. .

Even the RF must think how long are people going to put up with this farce. Remember they don't work hard Charles been waiting all his life to be a king now past 70 I think he looked embarrassed when queen put in a word for him to be Head of commonwealth even though that role is not hereditary Ann probably keeps busy with her horses and animals on acres of land. Then there is Andrew enough said about him. Then Edward what does he do life of luxury only because his mum happens to be queen what job or work has he ever done. It's true what Harry said they are trapped. But trapped in unheard of luxury.

They are in a soap opera the press always fawning over them what they wear trivia Is this what we want to hear? A HoS should be on the side of the people. There for the people. And Harry and William have they made up will they won't they or not.

I think it's time we had a proper democracy

So, at the risk of getting my throat jumped down again, who would you suggest and how would you go about it?

Welshwife Wed 07-Jul-21 23:07:46

I think that many of them do work harder than you think doing charity work etc and things which give the U.K. some good international standing. Princess Anne does a lot of charity work and Edward is taking over the Duke of Ed Awards scheme.
I am sure mr Google could give you a better idea.
Much of the Royal estates actually make money - the Duchy of Cornwall pays for Charles and his family and it gives a lot of employment. I watched a TV programme and was pleasantly surprised at what they do - land husbandry too.

Chestnut Wed 07-Jul-21 23:12:10

There have been endless programmes about the Queen and all the things she does Grany. You must not have been paying attention.

The Big Cheese

But sorry, I don't know his or her name as no-one seems to know, Chewbacca

Casdon Wed 07-Jul-21 23:17:57

Grany can you name us some people aged 95 and over who work more hours per week than the Queen?

Chewbacca Wed 07-Jul-21 23:26:37

Well I have asked twice, very politely, Callistemon, but all I got was a smart arsed remark about journalists and cheese. So I'm deducing that actually, this "bill" is half cocked and rudderless.

Chestnut Wed 07-Jul-21 23:44:44

Where is the evidence they work longer hours than the Queen? And one is in America. ?

Alegrias1 Wed 07-Jul-21 23:48:47

Where is the evidence that they don't?

Americans are people too. ?

At the risk of being derided, I do want to ask two questions.

Which country already has an elected head of state? I’d like to know so I can find out how their system works.

Why do we need a head of state? Do we really need one?

Rosycheeks Thu 08-Jul-21 06:07:25

So if we got rid of the monachy what would happen to all the royal buildings would Windsor Castle become an office block?, Buckingham Palace a hotel.? Kensington Palace a refugee center? Would the head of state live in an ex royal residence? I dont think the monachy will be abolished not in my lifetime anyway.

growstuff Thu 08-Jul-21 07:25:58

Grany It looks to me as though a debate about the monarchy is taking pace - on GN anyway. hmm

A debate about the monarchy takes place every single day on social and other forms of media.

Mollygo Thu 08-Jul-21 07:33:35

Just going back to the billboards idea. Does everyone want to see the UK plastered with billboards with people proclaiming what they think is the right thing to do about whatever?
I can understand people wanting a bigger audience for their beliefs, but billboards are a messy way of doing it. A scruffy looking poster does nothing for a cause, and billboards take a lot of upkeep, even if they’re not quickly defaced by those who disagree with the point being made.

nadateturbe Thu 08-Jul-21 07:52:08

When you believe something is wrong you find a solution. You don't keep doing it because you can't think of something better.

Interested Thu 08-Jul-21 08:05:21

It is amazing that the monarchy think it's OK to put their money abroad to not pay tax.

The former Royal palace in Paris is now one of the world's foremost art galleries. Anyone can visit Versailles, for a fee, and see it's glories for themselves. We can visit Windsor Castle today, I don't see why that should change?

I don't think most people are suggesting a communist coup where the Royal Family are turfed out of their houses and sent to live in Acacia Avenue.

Who would you nominate as Head of State?

Now there's the makings of a good thread. wink

Off the top of my head Teacheranne, probably every country without a monarch has an elected head of state. France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, US.

The head is state isn't necessarily the head of government. France's President is Macron, Germany's President is....well I don't know without googling. That's why the question about "who do you want for HoS" is so premature. We'd need to define the parameters of the job first, and IMO we would have separation between HoS and head of government. That's why the constant comments about not wanting President Trump are so wearing; whole different system of government.
