I don't know, Smileless, I hadn't heard of anything in particular.
He's just making excuses.
Good Morning Saturday 9th May 2026
How did you vote and why today
With Billboards across the country. What do you think?
£14,186 have already been raised of £30,000 target. With over 600 supporters.
Two updates.
Thank you to everyone who has helped us raise so much so quickly.
Republic has been able to book 12 billboards up and down the country, with more to come.
This will be one design (to be confirmed) that will be repeated in Aberdeen, Paisley and Glasgow, Newcastle, Leeds, Liverpool, the Potteries, Birmingham and Portsmouth.
We'll then work on additional designs to go up in Wales, London and other parts of England and Scotland.
The more we raise, the more billboards go up!
I think it's time for a debate, instead of hereditary queen king. We could choose who we want to be our Head of State
I don't know, Smileless, I hadn't heard of anything in particular.
He's just making excuses.
Yes Marcus Rashford is good. Plus he is black help to get racial equality that was lacking into the top job ha, seriously though a good choice
Great thread concept Grany.

^The public should have a debate on the monarchy Billboards^
I've had a good think about this, debated with myself and decided I don't want any Monarchy Billboards littering the country.
Thank you.
Me too! Great debate. I discussed it for all of 30 seconds and the decision was unanimous.
No Monarchy Billboards thank you.
Not for me thanks.
Well I took a little longer Chesnut, 35 seconds to be exact but came to the same unanimous decision.
Making excuses
it's just not on is it Callistemon
Well there are many talented and honourable decent intelligent people to choose from in the U.K. For the top job
Yes, but the problem is that we don't pick the honourable decent intelligent people do we? You only have to look at the Tory government, quite a few of the Labour party, many of the House of Lords, and remember Brexit when just under half the country fell under the spell of snake oil salesmen and charlatans, many unfit for public office? That in itself is enough to confirm for me that the electorate cannot be trusted to have independent thought, it would probably end up as someone like Rupert Murdoch. Nope, any country which applauds Pritt Patel, thinks Boris is 'doing his best' just does not have the intellectual maturity to make important decisions.

GillT57 has summed it up!
The population of the U.K. are far too stupid to be trusted with the vote. Perhaps they should decide who votes by the number of exams you passed, your income level, whether you own land or your own home? Just like in the good old days!
Thank you Kamiso, but be careful of calling the electorate stupid, that will bring the wrath of the Boris babes and Brexit supporters down upon you!
I can think of better things to spend the money on tbh than billboards. Then it’s a free country.
Isn't it funny how the only way monarchists can justify the monarchy is by belittling those who want to get rid of it, or by pretending there isn't anyone who could do the job or by saying they have thought about it (when they quite obviously haven't) and then by insisting it will be too difficult to do. You wonder how democracy and the vote was ever given to them.
So if we ignore the personal remarks. What are we left with? Who could do the job? well as we currently have an inbred, ineffectual, and fairly average monarch, and heir, who in spite of the best education money can buy basically achieved little, I suspect most could manage the job just as well.
If you only spend 30 seconds considering it could it be that you are responding emotionally?- which might make you feel happy but really shouldn't thinking people at least consider the alternative?
If elections are difficult would you be happy for us to get rid of them completely? Shouldn't democracy be something which challenges us.
As for who could do it. Well someone like Kate Bingham who organised the vaccine programme. Someone willing to use the best and achieve the most.
Trisher No matter how well an election for the H of S was run, it wouldn't necessarily result in an honest, intelligent and possibly charismatic person being elected.

So if the same can be said for governments Dinahmodo you advocate getting rid of universal suffrage? Or is it perhaps the fact that one elected government may be a catastrophe but at least you can change it at the next election a reason to keep it? And if so isn't the same true of a H of S.
What do we actually want a head of state to do? Are they going to be running the country - Trump signing all his Presidential orders, or is it going to be like the current monarch - hosting state banquets, presenting medals and endlessly opening schools, hospitals and libraries? I can imagine plenty of applicants who would like the running the country bit, perhaps not so many wanting to spend their lives shaking hands with local officials.

Isn't that what you're doing here, trying to belittle the monarchists? And how do you know the monarchists haven't thought about it? Maybe they have thought long and hard already and made their decision before this thread was even started.
I don't want to get rid of the monarchy in favour of a Head of State trisher. I'm not belittling anyone who wants to see and end to the monarchy. I'm not saying there isn't anyone who could do the job and I'm not saying it would be too difficult to do.
It's not what I want.
trisher "So if we ignore the personal remarks. What are we left with? Who could do the job? well as we currently have an inbred, ineffectual, and fairly average monarch, and heir, who in spite of the best education money can buy basically achieved little"
Supreme irony.
In fact, if I saw one of your hoardings I’d deface it That's a bit strong.
Republicans have every right to promote their cause, although I think the timing may not be right.
IMO she's very effectual, way above average as a monarch and has achieved a great deal due to a life time of service to her country.
Agree entirely Smileless

I do like a sense of continuity in a sometimes turbulent world.

Not belittling anyone simply summing up the comments made on this thread.
To be fair to Prince Charles, he was into climate change before most people had even heard of it…..

I think I would be tempted to felt pen a bit of graffiti on one, or, if there are faces, draw moustaches.
We don’t need billboards ( Bill Stickers will be prosecuted....
Poor old Bill, nobody likes him.)
Am a republican at heart but think the Queen has done a good job, and think Charles will too. After that, who knows? The public like the monarchy so can’t see much changing for years and years.

Mm negotiated a very good deal which made sure she could pretend to be paying taxes whilst dodging any that might significantly impact on her personal wealth (although I suspect it's a financial advisor who put her up to it)
If an elected H of S did the same there would be a huge outcry.
