Little Britain - the state of England today

I have picked upon England since I am not as aware of what is going on in the other countries of the Union with regard to the state of the nation.

I've been sitting in my home in France, with tempests outside, watching the Channel 4 News. It was so depressing.

90,000 families living in sub-standard temporary accommodation.

Racism

Water companies deliberately releasing sewage into rivers and sea, despite all the rules and regs and heavy fines.

Cuts to overseas aid - by one of the richest nations.

30,000 children in care moved last year away from their local area, schools, support networks etc, often without prior warning (not on Channel 4)

Cuts in the arts lessons in schools.

Football

We came to France, bought a plot of land and built a house. I guess we were lucky to do so. It was an adventure, something to stop us getting bogged down in our retirement. At the time we didn't intend to stay here but now I'm not so sure. The England that I loved has disappeared.

In the early fifties we moved to Dorset. Parents under 30 with 3 children. We got a council house, possibly because of my Father's job - I don't know. In those days we had one bath a week and didn't have individual towels. The loo was in the bathroom. in the early sixties we moved to a brand new house, with, joy o joy, a second separate loo. Today my house has 3 bedrooms and 3 bath/shower rooms. And at the same time there are tens of thousands of families living in sub standard housing. WHY?

The govt is picking on subjects like Voter ID. statues and BLM because they know that it will stir up a large proportion of the population. But they're not as important as other things that are happening, like the slow but sure privatisation of the NHS. How many of you have only been able to access your GP (if you have one, as we did in times gone by, who knew oneself) by video calls or Zoom or whatever?

The water companies are privately owned so they don't give a toss. Southern Water has been fined £90 million - so much but yet not enough to prevent them from continuing to release sewage into the sea. Channel had a map showing where there were releases along the south coast today. At least a dozen. it's lucky it's raining and there are heavy seas so people won't be swimming there any time soon.

The behaviour of football fans towards supporters of the opposition. Forcing their way into the stands reserved for the Danes and being abusive. Pulling a Danish mother's hair and calling her a whore and spitting at people.

I care about these things and yet I don't live in the UK at the moment. Why aren't you all caring about the wrongs? And, if you do, why aren't you doing something about it?

You can tell me that it's always been like this but I've been on this earth for 74 years and it's about times things changed.

Alegrias1 not sure where you got eight or so people in a tiny dinghy GMB was filming live one day this week, in fact they kept their boat close to one of the dinghies until a Border Force jet ski arrived on the scene. Multiple dinghies filled with 12 and in some case 13, 14 men onboard.

I have seen the pictures of migrants being housed in a disused office block along with a hotel in Kent which the council has block booked for several months.

I think very few of the migrants arriving recently could be classed as children mid to late teens maybe more of an appropriate guesstimation .

www.channel4.com/news/uk-pays-france-54m-to-help-reduce-english-channel-migrant-crossings

I can't find the footage of the children sleeping on floors, I think it was Ch4 as well. So lefty propaganda, obviously.

I doesn't matter how many of the recently arrived migrants are classed as children; expecting them to sleep on the floor for days on end is not the way a civilised country behaves.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 23-Jul-21 10:00:25

Alegrias1 apologies I have just seen that several younger children arrived yesterday.

Alegrias It's immaterial how ridiculous you may find low level racism, or that you care to refer to it with sarcasm, racism is racism, and is never acceptable.

Its time for the media to keep on focussing on the incidents of racism. Exactly! I agree with that 100%. And that includes right here; on this forum.

Trying to shame me won't work Chewbacca. I know the difference between racism and xenophobia, and I know that people like to say they are the victims when they have no idea what the problem is really like.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 23-Jul-21 10:01:49

Alegrias1 the news footage I saw of the young men being housed in the disused office block showed, camp beds.

Yes, that was it, GG13. The boy with his head propped up on the hard chair? Sleeping between rows of seats?

So you have different levels of what racism is acceptable and what isn't. Okaaaay. That explains a lot, thanks. wink

Alegrias1 Fri 23-Jul-21 10:23:56

Still won't work. wink

Kali2
it does puzzle me
Your on your own there because nobody else is puzzled
As you are well aware I can’t expand on that comment as it would be the report button as sure as eggs are eggs.

MawBe- there is no need for MayBe70 to 'know anything' - your personal attacks on every word and utterance I say are clear for all to see, day in, and day out.

And it seems from comments that you used to do the same with another, or other posters in the past. Not sure why you do- it does not bother me but it does puzzle me. That's OK- the problem is all yours - water over a duck's back for me- but it is a bit weird, really.

That's rather a confusing post.

I haven't seen MawBe making any^personal attacks on every word and utterance you say day in, and day out Kali2. That is a falsehood.

MawBe has posted two or three times on this thread, rarely posts now anyway and none on here directed at you, Kali2.

Personal attacks are on people are they not, not on what they post? It is within guidelines to challenge what people post especially if there are grounds for doubt, attempts to deceive?

It took me a long time to call out someone for racism and it resulted in me having to leave a social group because I was regarded as a troublemaker by doing it. But I’m glad I did now. I’ve spent a lot of my life ignoring casual racist remarks from people because I didn’t want to upset anyone. And they would make those remarks because for some reason they think everyone agrees with them.

Chewbcca Referring to your email yesterday about racism I looked up some definitions. They don't appear to chime with your comments which appeared to be about English people talking about other English people.

From the Cambridge Dictionary

"B2
policies, behaviours, rules, etc. that result in a continued unfair advantage to some people and unfair or harmful treatment of others based on race :
The authorities are taking steps to combat/fight/tackle racism in schools.
The report made it plain that institutional racism (= racism in all parts of an organization) is deep-rooted in this country.
B2
harmful or unfair things that people say, do, or think based on the belief that their own race makes them more intelligent, good, moral, etc. than people of other races :
The research found that half of the refugees had encountered racism since entering the country.
She said that she had experienced some overt racism first-hand.
He wanted to show what it felt like to be the subject of casual racism."

From Collins

"Racism is the belief that people of some races are inferior to others, and the behaviour which is the result of this belief. Racism also refers to the aspects of a society which prevent people of some racial groups from having the same privileges and opportunities as people from other races.
...a campaign to combat racism.
Synonyms: racial discrimination, racial prejudice, bigotry, racialism More Synonyms of racism"

Chewbacca Fri 23-Jul-21 17:08:26

Are we certain that those making the racial stereotypical remarks are English Dinahmo? As I neither know, nor care about the ethnicity of anyone on this forum, I wouldn't know.

Dinahmo Fri 23-Jul-21 21:36:05

I doubt if there are many non white, non British origin on here.

Kali2 Sat 24-Jul-21 10:59:11

Indeed Chewb, some may be Scottish, Welsh or from NI.

MayBee70 Sun 25-Jul-21 10:37:29

Just heard that people from one branch of the RNLI have been verbally abused on their way to work because they’re still rescuing migrants. And that anti vacc’ers on the march the other day were calling for doctors to be strung up sad

Callistemon Sun 25-Jul-21 10:49:23

There's always the lunatic fringe, Maybee

We should do what some of the Europeans do - use teargas and water cannon.
That'll disperse them.

MayBee70 Sun 25-Jul-21 11:27:59

I stopped collecting for Christian Aid because I used to get doors slammed in my face but I’ve never before heard of any animosity towards the RNLI.

Callistemon Sun 25-Jul-21 13:00:32

I know what I'd do to those abusing the RNLI
(Perhaps best not posted on here).

MayBee70 Sun 25-Jul-21 13:03:04

They’re probably the sort of people that end up having to be rescued as well!

Or, we could stop the Home Secretary and her cohorts spreading disinformation about the very people that the RNLI are trying to save, because it makes the hard-of-thinking believe we should just leave them to drown.

MayBee70 Sun 25-Jul-21 13:08:24

Precisely. By the way, I didn’t know till today that there was an Olympic team consisting entirely of refugees. I hope they do well!

Alegrias1 Sun 25-Jul-21 13:15:47

Wasn't that wonderful MayBee70, when they walked out into the stadium?

MayBee70 Sun 25-Jul-21 14:09:11

I didn’t see it. DH told me about it. I wish I had.
