Gwyneth, leave those desperate people out of this argument, this is so below the belt and totally wrong.
No-one has said the UK is a dreadful place to live- but that this PM, and this Government, are making every attempt to destroy what was so much better than elsewhere- our NHS, tolerance, openess, acceptance of differences in a positive way- and so much more.

Would the EU ever trust us and want us back???
(304 Posts)Let's imagine the majority of people in the UK change their mind about leaving. Comes a new PM next election, who is pro EU and wants to negotiate a return, with the backing of a strong majority of the population, say 65% + -
what would the EU say?
As many headlines around the world have been saying this week- Can the UK ever be trusted again?
As you say Frenchie no Priti Patel so why are migrants risking their lives to leave France if the UK is such a dreadful place to live?

The vaccine development and roll out in uk.
The Oxford lab suffered a huge gap in funding after the EU money was removed and the roll-out was done by Bingham and the NHS.
Next?
Not quite right. In January 2020 the UK Government gave more than £33million of funding on top of £5million given earlier making it the largest overall source of money. We paid for vaccines before they were reliable and available.
Gwyneth Brexit has taken away the right to live in EU. My British husband had to get a residency card whilst waiting to get French nationality. All of our British friends in France had to do the same but all very happy to be allowed to stay. No Priti Patel here!

grannyrebel7 I can't think of one either. I look forward to reading the answers to your excellent question.
The vaccine development and roll out in uk.
grannyrebel7 I can't think of one but I'm sure that there are others on here who will be able to.
I just wonder why all the posters on here who are always criticising the UK and think Europe is perfect don’t move there particularly after the Brexit vote. Also why are many Europeans seeking permanent residence here and migrants risking their lives on small boats to get out of France to live in this awful country.
This is a link to an asylum information database which has reports on the status of refugees in various countries. France is shown to be lacking as is the UK.

Perhaps I should warn some of you that this document is produced by the EU which means that some of you might not believe it.
As has been said before, many people try to get to the UK because English is their second language. I am aware that posters in the past have said that it's because they have family here but, in all honesty, I would have thought that if they have family in the UK that family would be helping them.
Johnson was stating the other day that refugees should remain in the country in which they land. Often that country is Italy which currently has 170,000 refugees.
The following is a link to the situation in the Med where thousands of people have lost their lives trying to make the sea crossing.

Finally, a report from UNHCR which states categorically that Britain does not have more refugees than other countries

I would love to be part of the EU again and I think they would have us back. Nothing good has come out of Brexit. It's ruined the fishing industry, nurses and doctors from the EU are leaving in their droves, we can't get people to pick our fruit and there's chaos at the borders with lorries not getting through. Can someone tell me just one benefit of Brexit so far?
Well I didn't answer the question so I'll do my best now. Politicians have said basically there are no permanent friends nor permanent enemies just permanent interests (or words to that effect!) so tbh I don't think trust will come into it. If at some time in the future the UK wants to rejoin the EU the decision will be based on what suits the EU at that time. ie will it be in their interest or not. BJ won't be PM for ever and who knows what changes will happen in the next decade or so. The media will write all sorts of stuff to sell newspapers but what is said and written now will be of little consequence, look at how quickly Trump's decisions have been over ridden and the US, to a large extent, is seen as being back in it's world role.

Using the plight of these desperate people. to make your point, is much worse than beyond a joke, It is sick and wrong.
Narrow and bigoted? In what way?I am trying to point out to you Kali that many people in many countries want to come to the UK, indeed are desperate to come here because they know they will be treated well if considered for asylum. They prefer the UK to living in France, where they are often badly treated. The UK is a great place to live, especially for those who want to work hard and get on in life, and is liberal and fair.
Your comments ( constantly knocking the UK) are getting beyond a joke.

Perhaps you should have a word with all the people crammed into an inflatable boat heading out from French waters....you could save them an arduous perilous trip if they knew how terrible things are in the UK.
Oh stop it, this is just disgusting and out of order. Don't misuse these poor peoples tragic lives and misery to your narrow and bigoted ends. So far below belt and wrong.
I had not seen the post before mine when I posted but QED I think.
Exactly why we are losing trust around the world frenchie [Sun 25-Jul-21 15:08:46]
The leave/Conservative groups are so used to being given "others". It is the nature of those such as Johnson and the people behind him that they do not ask themselves "how do we make people better off" - that was never the point of Brexit. This New Tory group poor oil on old enmities and set light to them to give those who support them someone or some group they can blame. You can see them doing it all the time.
The problems are never caused by Johnson and the New Tory Group. Where the EU is concerned they will set up Poles and Romanians, "Migrants", Brussels, bureaucrats - well you know this list as well as I do. These are to be seen as the cause of the problems and sadly no amount of facts will see the mask fall from the government - yet.
Sadly, by the time the mask falls, we will have lost even more credibility.

Time and the changing of the political elite due to replacement by younger folks heals many wounds.
I am sure in 25, 30 years re-accession will be possible.
Well, there are- if you speak Italian, French, German and many other languages, and if you have friends and contacts all over the world. This is an English site, so searching for links and posting them, in dozens of languages, is not appropriate. Hence the CNN one as an example.
It makes little difference to most people if they really were
Doing so Kali but they aren’t. French / German / Other newspapers may be UK bashing, it probably sells papers.
‘The whole world’ should have better things to do with itself if all it thinks about is shaking it’s collective head in disbelief at whatever goes on in the UK.?
The OP also stated "As many headlines around the world have been saying this week - Can the UK ever be trusted again".
Now I accept that CNN is broadcast all over the world and that that singular article, for this reason, will have been seen/available to see all over the world. However, it is disingenuous to claim that this is the same as there being "many headlines around the word".
GrannyGravy13
PippaZ what is your opinion on the OP?
No thoughts on the segment of the article I posted above?
I ask because we (GN posters) rarely get to know your opinion as your modus operandi is to ^pull other posters posts and views apart^
Isn't that exactly what you and many others do?
Pot, kettle!
