Too many people using foodbanks. I can fully understand UK citizens being concerned refugees will be a further drain on the system. Actually, I don't think the numbers would be significant. The real issue is traffickers putting lives in danger and whether the actions of the RNLI are exacerbating this problem.

Well that's quite an insulting and dismissive assumption HolySox, but about par for the course on this thread.

I agree with you about homelessness, foodbanks and the difficult circumstances people find themselves in. But I am led to ask, in an economy that is so large, so prosperous, how can it be so? Is it the people coming here to escape persecution and make their lives better, or is it the greedy, self interested and criminally incompetent governments we've had for the last decade? The individuals who always seem to be able to leave government richer individually than when they entered it? The ones who tell us there's no money for school meals but manage to find the cash to buy a nice new yacht and underwrite HS2?

Scapegoating the migrants won't get us out of this mess and I'm going to keep telling people who have got that wrong. Nobody dared say it in 2016 and look where that got us.

So anybody who thinks I’m argumentative and patronising, report me and see if I get banned. I’ll take it on the chin. Giving actual facts rather than regurgitating Farage’s nonsense isn’t being patronising.

So I’ll say this as unargumentatively and unpatronisingly as I can. The RNLI are not exacerbating the problem.

This seems a very emotive subject, which appears to reflect political views, but I see it as a humanitarian problem.
We don’t pull our weight in the U.K. with regard to taking refugees and accept far fewer than most EU countries.
I am so so grateful that purely by accident of birth my family are not amongst those risking their lives to reach a safe country such as ours.
Farage may have done the RNLI a favour (unintended consequence) because their donations have increased hugely since his criticism, £200,000 in a single day, and volunteering inquiries also increased.

The Conservative party promised to protect an expected 3000 vulnerable children travelling to the UK on their own
They have now closed this scheme after accepting only 480 children
Patel now wants to strip away safe and legal routes to the UK, forcing people to take the most dangerous routes
It's inhumane and shames us all

Because they lie and play to peoples prejudices. It's scary. It's exactly what Hitler did. Some posters on here would have wanted the RNLI to turn back refugees from Nazi Germany.

Just a quick google search provides evidence that immigrants are net contributors to the UK economy.

The country is on its knees because of the billions pilfered by the Cons and their mates (PPE, Test and Trace anyone?) NOT because of desperate refugees.

Some of us just don't want the RLNI taken advantage of but this thread has taken a huge downturn by the hate brigade.

Quite right. As I posted in the distant past, this issue was also reported by the MailOnline but an element here are simply using the thread as a 'let's bash Farage'. Shame as some posters have some interesting views but lost amongst the shouting match.

Well Alegrias. One ‘ assumption’ you made, is that Kier Starmer would never have said the things Farage said. If you can make one, I’m sure there are many more.

What you call "vitriolic" I might call "justified criticism" then.
