To want to weep fir the girls in afghanistaan

Taliban knocking on doors and taking little girls as young as twelve away to be sex slaves. Girls allowed no schooling, all females to wear that horrible burka. Systematic rape of those darling girls. I have two tiny granddaughters aged two and a half and 18 months and although it is far from perfect in the west life is far, far better for them here. Where they have a future. The little ones in afghanistaan do not, through no fault of their own.

I think the chaos now is down to Biden. Trump would have got people out before the troops. Trump also had some control over the Taliban. He rang the leader each week to tell him what would happen if an american was harmed after the agreement with them. No american was harmed!

I’m not exactly reassured to know that Trump was dealing and negotiating with the Taliban after what happened at the end of his presidency.

So right!

Meghan bashing is not appropriate to this thread I feel. Any excuse.

There is so little hope for the future there - this bit of window-dressing will not last. They just need to keep some stuff running smoothly during the changeover period and will simply revert to type once they have got their feet properly under the table.

It is beginning to look very very worrying for women and children. They are according to a New York charity bearing the violence from the Taliban.

Edith81 A bit unfair saying we and the Us started it. We followed the US after 9/11. Did you think the US should have ignored that? We were under threat from AQ as well. The Afghan are under threat from the Taliban and I think we quite probably are as well. Maybe we should have stayed and finished off the Taliban as well.

As Meghan Markle is so intent on saving young girls, especially those of colour, perhaps she could channel some of that energy into helping these poor Afghan women and girls. What a terrifying situation to be in. We and the US(Trump started it) should hang their heads in shame in condemning these poor females to this horrible fate.??

Quite a lot if reports are to be believed. The Taliban are appearing to be conciliatory at the moment , but the second all western personal have left the country I believe they will gradually revert to type while the rest of the world gets diverted onto the next crisis. I think this is inevitable.

Sadly I agree; the Taliban do have a history of reneging on a deal.

I also wonder what proportion of their band have we inadvertently trained?

Galaxy Tue 17-Aug-21 20:35:46

Yes surely nobody believes what they are saying.

SueDonim Tue 17-Aug-21 18:35:32

They’re talking the talk. Maybe they’re just waiting until the West’s back is turned and we’ve moved on to something else.

Luckygirl Tue 17-Aug-21 17:36:13

Don't trust them an inch - it is all window dressing.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 17-Aug-21 17:27:05

Anyone watch the Taliban press thing.

They sounded almost moderate! Obviously for world consumption. They need money as they are totally bankrupt. I suppose that is one lever the world could use to ensure reasonable treatment of women etc. We can’t expect western values, but maybe a kinder interpretation of Shia law?

The problem is that many of the military in America seem to be Trump supporters and I dread to think of what might have happened if Biden had reneged on Trumps promise to withdraw their troops from Afghanistan. What a terrible mess this has created.

JenniferEccles Tue 17-Aug-21 15:18:02

Joe Biden has blamed Afghan leaders and the country’s military for refusing to fight.
He added that it was “wrong to order American troops to step up when Afghanistan’s own forces would not.”
He stood by his decision despite criticism from some quarters.

It seems he has the support of his country as over 70% of Americans agree with his actions.

Another vote of thanks for your posts Chapeau. If there is anything practical that can be done to help, please post to let us know?

Aveline Tue 17-Aug-21 13:21:05

Chapeau please tell your female contacts that the world is worrying for them and sending waves of hope and goodwill to them. Only wish it could be more. Much more. It's like a nightmare. How can the 'bad guys' have won?

MayBee70 Tue 17-Aug-21 12:23:22

Chapeau. Please tell all of your friends in Afghanistan how much we are all thinking of them. And, has been mentioned please keep us informed of what is happening. Along with others I, too was wondering why the young men were just deserting the women. It’s so easy to jump to the wrong conclusion sometimes.

MerylStreep Tue 17-Aug-21 12:17:37

The Taliban have called for an amnesty.
Why would that be?
Could it be that they have discovered that there’s no money in the country and they need help? Mmmm, let me think.

GillT57 Tue 17-Aug-21 11:11:41

This is what I expected from a Trump government not a Biden one. What was the point? I cannot get my head around what has happened surely there should if been a more strategic planned exit to safeguard the people to live their lives they way they have been able to the past 20 years. Now I feel we are all at risk with these extremists seizing power. Who knows how many military will be needed to correct the repercussions the f this mess in the future. I understand the frustrations but I believe this is not the way to go about a withdrawal of protection.
