CNN report.

It is a true humanitarian crises.

The OP was about flights not having taken off for eight hours starting on Friday. PP wondered if there was footage of flights arriving after that.

You posted a video of a flight landing last Wednesday, basically saying, here's one.

Doesn't add up smile. No arguments with your logistics comments.

Here you are. Easily found. 10.54 hours flight time, before they can even take off they have to fit the passengers in, planes are not able to carry thousands at a time you know, no seats they have to be strapped to the floor and made safe, all takes time.

This thread started on Friday.

That flight touched down last Wednesday. 2 days before anyone started talking about flights being stopped.

See the logic here?

Sometimes it pays to check your facts before telling others things are "easy to find".

Doesn’t alter the fact about the logistics of it all does it? Or do you know better,.

You're very argumentative, I think.

No, I don't know better about logistics.

But I know better than to use out of date evidence to try to prove a point. In some circles that's called fake news.

I think you are also being very argumentative, in fact you seem to disparage anything I dare utter, how can it be false news when it happened. I bow to your superiority , and will not partake of any more on this.

Maybe the president of Afghan people could return the cash he took. To be distributed to Afghan people. And flights leaving with people on board, with paperwork to be sorted on board. Sort it out when plane lands. Quicker exit for those kids and babies.

Don’t expect that, the elite of any country make sure their own nest is feathered first and usually last. More so if they have fled the country in a hurry.

More control now the Taliban are allowing the US to organize the airport and seem to be cooperating regulating flow of civilians. What happens after evacuation ends on 31st August we will see, no guarantees.

It could be much much worse.

Tickingbird thank you for your comments above, which have clarified my feelings about Trump not being a politician but a tough negotiator. Biden seems utterly indifferent to the chaos he has unleashed, and the proximity of the mid term elections provides an explanation.

tickingbird Mon 23-Aug-21 09:19:04

Dustyhen I do also worry about the future mental health of those soldiers being put in the horrific position of having to deny help to those crying out for it. That will haunt them forever

Why do you think so many take their own lives?

I watched a US general being interviewed a few days ago and he said although Trump initiated the withdrawal it had strict conditions attached and the Taliban knew if they reneged on the agreement Trump would act. He actually said Trump was tough but his manner wasn’t in keeping with a statesman and let’s face it, he wasn’t a politician. This general did make it clear that this fiasco wouldn’t have happened if Trump had been POTUS.

Incidentally, one doesn’t have to be a Trump supporter to acknowledge his handling of this crisis would have been preferable to Biden’s.

Additionally, I have read and heard from several sources that this withdrawal is popular with the US public and Biden, conscious of the upcoming mid terms, doesn’t wish to lose votes. How he sleeps at night is beyond me. Let thousands, if not millions, suffer but staying in power is paramount. Sickening and I hope it backfires on him.

I see Johnson says things are getting better......I have just watched the news and seen dreadful footage and heard what the reporters in the ground say. Johnson, I don't think so

??? I had to grin when I listened to him.

He is such an idiot.

I had just finished watching CNN and footage of the chaos being told that no flights had left for 8 hours.

Then idiot came on and announced that things have improved today and that 1000 people have been evacuated to the U.K.

Hope footage of this plane is shown when it lands.

Just read your post Dustyhen2010(15-06)
Couldn't agree more--those soldiers will never be able to escape their feelings of helplessness at being faced with such scenes.

Sweetpeasue Sat 21-Aug-21 19:09:51

Have just watched the latest footage on Sky news.
Absolutely terrible scenes with soldiers carrying distressed children to their parents. These people are terrified. It's just heartbreaking, unbearable. Brought tears to my eyes.
I can't imagine how the reporters live with these images and scenes in their head.
Lost for words!

Words are easy. The newsreels speak volumes .By the way
I see Johnson has said he has confidence in Raab . Didn't he say that about Dominic Cummins ?

This Government are all as bad as each other. Whenever one of them does or says something that could result in them being sacked they all close ranks and make statements supporting the wrongdoer. Raab should go because his dithering about has resulted in the Taliban reaching Kabul and preventing a safe and orderly evacuation for the poor people desperate to leave. Raab wanted his holiday in peace, these poor Afghans just want to live in peace. I don't know how he sleeps at night.

Think you’ll find it’s Biden sudden unilateral withdrawal from Afghanistan that allowed the Taliban to reach Kabul.

What is worrying me is that the reporters are beginning to leave.

Who is going to record what is happening?

That is what the Taliban are waiting for.

I think it is one of the worst things that has happening for decades.

The feeling of helplessness is dreadful

The pictures of the frightened and crying children are just heartbreaking. The frightened people are desperate. The soldiers are having to turn away numerous desperate and panicking people; it is clear from watching a lone soldier shouting No continuously and forcing a gate shut against a desperate woman, that things are still close to bubbling over into complete loss of control of a desperate crowd. Heartbreaking!

I agree truly heartbreaking. I do also worry about the future mental health of those soldiers being put in the horrific position of having to deny help to those crying out for it. That will haunt them forever.

The big issue I think is that both leaders - Biden and Johnson dont seem to be able to match rhetoric with footage that the world is seeing.

Watching Biden

Not a lot he is saying seems to fit with what I’ve been watching today on footage direct from Afghanistan.

Neither did the NATO bod seem to agree with what Biden is saying.

Oh no,you can't just blame Trump. His deal had several caveats, none of which Biden carried through. Only Biden established the military leaving first, civilians later and weaponry left behind. Biden left without informing his NATO allies, none of this can be attributed to Trump.
