Anyone else rooting for Pen and his animals ?

39 pets died before during or after a flight out of 2 million Zoe.
(Your article)

I bet most of us would take a chance of escaping to be honest.

Thanks grannygravy - I suppose it’s a reason but personally I’d still have rather seen people there.

As regards the animals in the hold issue… if it’s safe for animals I think it’s actually safe for people.

They really can't, NotSpaghetti.

It's not a great experience for animals actually.

Conditions in the cargo hold of commercial jets are not always friendly; temperatures can fluctuate wildly, noise can be tremendous and air pressure can drop significantly, and pets that are checked into this dark space beneath the passenger cabin sometimes die.

Or, they could have used that space for animal cages if they had allowed Pen and his people into the airport earlier, before the Taliban blocked them?

Or they could have destroyed the armoured car rather than let the Taliban have it?

Or they could have used it to try to get some of the people to the land borders, like they are telling them to do?

Not hearing any valid excuses so far....

Alegrias - what the heck is THAT about???

Cleared passengers loaded first, any spare space is used to take out ^operational machinery/vehicles according to the article.

People before property obviously.

If it is an armoured car, and there is capacity rather get it out than leave it for the Taliban to use…

^Not Spaghetti^ It may be me being stupid here but I thought all these flights were on cargo planes so isn’t everything in one big space?

The flight organised for the animals was not a cargo plane it was a privately funded aeroplane with seats and a cargo hold I don’t know but I suspect they are not licensed for carrying humans in the cargo hold

Zoejory Thu 26-Aug-21 09:20:30

They aren't using a cargo plane. They've chartered their own plane which has a hold that can house the dogs. But you can't put humans in there.

If this is true and the animals are taking up spaces that people could use I couldn't do that.

Your dog or your daughter?
No contest.
Sadly.

Thanks just watched it fingers crossed for Friday morning take off ?

Alegrias1 Thu 26-Aug-21 09:02:32

No room for the animals and they're just taking up space, it would seem, according to Wallace

But they managed to find space for an SUV.

Now I don't know the backstory but I can't think of any justification for evacuating a lump of metal ahead of any living being.

As an animal lover and someone who believes we dismiss their suffering too readily, I find myself siding with the people first camp. As others have said mothers are passing babies to soldiers.

Pen Farthing is admirable for his efforts on behalf of these dogs and cats but they won’t be suffering the fear of knowing what’s ahead like humans will.

Luckygirl Thu 26-Aug-21 08:49:09

I admire the fact that he would not leave his Afghan workers in the lurch; but, as others have said, human beings and their belongings (such as they are) should take priority over animals for space both in the plant and the hold.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 26-Aug-21 08:36:57

There is a guy on TV news at the moment (Dominic Dyer) who will be on the Charter Plane when it leaves Luton U.K. this evening for Kabul Airport.

vegansrock Thu 26-Aug-21 08:05:35

It’s not just Biden who is awful, Johnson and Raab on holiday when it all predictably kicked off didn’t help.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 26-Aug-21 08:03:43

On the news it is being said that the Taliban are stopping Pen and his convoy from reaching the Airport.

The world has gone to pot. I'm in despair what's the point of it all. The Taliban back in power again nothing has changed, America has left them all their military equipment, Biden is a disgrace.

Jaxjacky Thu 26-Aug-21 07:47:34

There is now intelligence of a possible terrorist attack at Kabul airport, people are being advised to stay away.

tanith Thu 26-Aug-21 07:39:55

Apparently the Taliban wouldn’t let his convoy through to the airport and they have been held up for 8 hrs at the last report. Sad affair for all concerned especially if he and his staff don’t get out after all because they choose to stay with the animals but it’s their choice I guess.

Maudi Thu 26-Aug-21 07:39:01

No news yet ? think they are stuck outside the airport with the animals, what a dreadful situation.

NotSpaghetti Thu 26-Aug-21 07:37:32

I'm not judging here. Just asking by the way.

NotSpaghetti Thu 26-Aug-21 07:36:36

Can someone technical please explain why the (presumably pressurised) cargo hold is ok for animals but not people in this circumstance?

I just don't understand some of the comments above about it being ok to to bring animals out ahead of people if they are in the hold?

I may be being stupid here but my assumption was that animals need the same pressurised environment as people?

User7777 Thu 26-Aug-21 00:31:02

At least he cares about his animals and staff. Many people dont bother, and it's a me first situation at times. I do hope his staff and animals make it out. As I dearly hope the rest of the people do.
