Anyone else rooting for Pen and his animals ?

Maybe you should think about the ownership of the Sunday Times and a bit about Tim Shipman. The latter is currently political editor and has only ever written for right wing papers.

Dinahmo my reading may not be eclectic enough to read the Times - it's behind a paywall I think.

JaneJudge Sun 29-Aug-21 18:58:15

I thought it was reasonable too!

Ailidh Sun 29-Aug-21 18:39:12

Excellent article, JaneJudge.

Dinahmo Sun 29-Aug-21 18:26:32

JaneJudge Why do you think that? I've just read it and the content seems to be reasonable and fairly accurate.

tickingbird people have only been poohed when they have come up with unsupportable comments. There are several on here for example.

tickingbird Sun 29-Aug-21 17:22:09

However I don't think I've seen many links to the Mail (Daily or Sunday)

It would be pointless as regardless of the validity of the article it would be pooh poohed and the poster shot down in flames.

JaneJudge Sun 29-Aug-21 17:18:36

this is an interesting article which will no doubt wind some people up

Mine too. When I did buy newspapers I had The Mail and The Mirror every morning. I like a balance.

Dinahmo Sun 29-Aug-21 17:10:11

Excellent news.

Blossoming Sun 29-Aug-21 17:03:21

I understand that Mr. Farthing and his accompanying cats and dogs are now in the UK, the animals have been examined by vets, declared to be in good health and are now in quarantine facilities.

Surely this is good news.

*Lucca*, dogs are not allowed to be pets by the Taliban. They are deemed unclean. They'd be shot.clubbed to death/burned etc etc

I've just had the misfortune to read an article in the Sunday Mail where Pen is being ripped to shreds by their angry readers. Bit like this thread actually.

This website informs of what they have done over the years

www.nowzad.com/our-work/our-shelter

They have also rehomed over 1000 dogs to their soldiers all over the world. The soldiers have taken great comfort in these dogs. 10 years ago the family of a young soldier managed to save his dog who had survived. Their son had told them about this lovely dog who had been his friend and support in that hell hole.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/newsbeat-15990370

As *Alegrias! has pointed out, he didn't jump the queue. He was sat for 13 hours in scorching temperatures and didn't jump the queue. He didn't put dogs before people.

Just do a spot of research rather then taking snippets from the media

Im not a hater, I have not ripped Pen to shreds.
I haven’t taken snippets from the media.
I expressed an opinion quite politely.

Whatdayisit We must have read different articles or op eds because I didn't think Labour were to win.

I must have misinterpreted what I read !

I can't believe my eyes.
This man has left Afghanistan with his cats and dogs, but left his staff behind ?
Ye Gods.

Too many unsubstantiated allegations are given too much credence; investigate before you pronounce judgement.

Jabberwok Sun 29-Aug-21 15:40:13

His staff weren't able to leave, he didn't 'leave them behind' in favour of his animals. This has been pointed out and explained ad nauseam on here and other news outlets.

Daisend1 Sun 29-Aug-21 15:37:12

Animals go into allocated areas where it would not be safe for humans .

Whatdayisit Sun 29-Aug-21 15:32:32

I have never subscribed to BSB or Sky either.

Whatdayisit Sun 29-Aug-21 15:31:32

Excuse me Dinahmo but I have never ever paid 1p for any of Murdoch's trash. I certainly do not need that pointing out.
I don't even take a free Sun to wipe my backside with when offered in a garage. Page 3, Wapping, Hillsborough to start with.

I don't believe The Guardian because reading The Guardian made me believe JC was going to win the election in 2019. And I haven't recovered. I don't believe everything I read in it to be fair they are all journalists.

As o have said already I'm glad the cats and dogs are out and it is Western Leaders lack of urgency why the others aren't not Pen whatever his personality or the pets. And his staff would have wanted the pets to get out too.

How do you suggest he could have got his staff out when he’d already tried?

Would you argue with the Taliban?

JaneJudge Sun 29-Aug-21 14:47:54

I'm glad he managed to get back with the animals but it's very sad about his staff and I hope they'll still be able to get out too.

It seems lots of mistakes were made by this government but I don't feel robust enough to comment even though I am saintly in nature and have rescue dogs

Dinahmo Sun 29-Aug-21 14:38:00

Callistemon I think that most of are aware the Mail has run some excellent campaigns. However I don't think I've seen many links to the Mail (Daily or Sunday)

Maybe you should think about the ownership of the Sunday Times and a bit about Tim Shipman. The latter is currently political editor and has only ever written for right wing papers.

The former is owned by News UK which is a wholly owned subsidiary of News Corp (formerly News international). The CEO of News UK is Rebekah Brooks, formerly of News of the World and of course News Corp is owned by Robert Murdoch.

Brooks just happened to be editor during the infamous phone hacking which took place when the paper launched its campaign against "naming and shaming" whilst at the same time hacking the voice mail of Sarah Payne's mother.

The Guardian and the Observer are owned by a trust, as I'm sure you are aware. Are you saying that you disbelieve the statement that it was an announcement from the MOD?

The Guardian was instrumental in uncovering evidence about the phone hacking and is no friend of News Corp.

westendgirl Sun 29-Aug-21 13:37:32

Months ago there were petitions to sign highlighting the plight of the interpreters and getting them out .
What has the government been doing ? As usual everything is left to the last minute with this government. Comes down to .Johnson not being able to make up his mind and most of the cabinet without clout.

Callistemon Sun 29-Aug-21 13:32:42

I thought The Guardian was the temple of all truth. It’s quoted so often on here and always as some kind of clincher in any debate as in “here’s the link” followed by a direct line to the article.

I apologise for being flippant but sometimes I despair……

No-one is allowed to quote the Daily Mail, tickingbird, even their long campaign to try to get the Afghan interpreters and families evacuated to the UK.

This was the story a month ago:
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9832589/Generals-fury-UK-snubs-130-heroic-Afghan-translators-brass-demanding-sanctuary-men.html

LondonMzFitz Sun 29-Aug-21 13:31:55

if the animals had been euthanised a week or two ago, then the man and all his staff and their families could have got safely out.
obviously saving the animals as well is the ideal situation, but it look to me that the insistence on getting them out has in effect meant that the staff could not get out.
nobody wants animals to suffer or be lost, but humans must come first.
sometimes the best is the enemy of the good.

Hindsight ain't it wonderful.

31 August 2021 will be the last flight out. In fact it was moved to 28 August 2021.

Troops will leave on 11 September 2021 (report in April 2021) but the Afghan army are trained and will withstand any efforts by the Taliban to seize control. Took 4 days.

If the animals had been euthanised a week ago - what is the point of an animal sanctuary without animals? Who in the future would support a charity that would euthanise their animals without giving the chance of getting out a fair whack?

It wasn't an either / or situation. It was never animals before people. Pen Farthing had got the plane sorted, Boris Johnson had given the go-ahead for the staff (and animals) to come to the UK. All he needed a week ago was the information to give the chartered flight and they could have been in that queue at the airport last Monday.
