What does each political group want?

Can we put a strap-line under each parties name that tells us the raison d'etre for that view of politics? I don't mean an essay. On the other hand nor do I think three-word slogans such as "The People's Party" explain what they are hoping to be in power for.

This is my offering so far:

Conservativism Emphasises traditions and relies on the individual to maintain society.

Liberal Democracy Belief that freedom is impossible without equality, and that governments should promote egalitarianism by providing education and health care supported by taxes.

Libertarianism Believe that taxes are bad and that people should provide for their own education and health care.

Socialism An economic and political system where the community or state owns the general means of production (i. e. farms, factories, tools, and raw materials.)

Social Democracy Similar values to socialism, but within a capitalist framework. Supports a competitive economy with money while also helping people whose jobs don't pay a lot.

Greenism/ecopolitics Aims to foster an ecologically sustainable society often, but not always, rooted in environmentalism, nonviolence, social justice and grassroots democracy.

I suggest we try and keep to three(ish) lines for each. You will see I had to divide up the possible aims of the Labour Party - but that is because I see it as divided - others may not.

Good Luck and in my case ... thanks to the Honourable Member for Google.

To be honest I'm not that bothered. The average wage earners always come off worse what ever political party is in power. They either get taxed to support the under paid or taxed to allow the overpaid to get away with it.

Most probably smile

Tbh Maizie, I think I am left leaning but I'd have thought I was more centered <shrugs> I did the quiz last night though and can't remember any of the questions this morning!

I did find the choices a bit too binary in some instances, just 'agree' or 'disagree'. I'd have liked a 'mostly (agree / disagree) option. Perhaps if that had been in, there would have been some more 'centrist' findings.

I'm Left/Libertarian too. Edging down from Caroline Lucus and on to the edge of the hair of the chap with the beard. I didn't think I was that left or that libertarian but it would place me nearer to LD than LP wouldn't it?

Yes, I think I was by someone's beard grin

Way over my head. I will say it’s a good idea though.

Conservaties - high profit business need encouragement cos they bring prosperity to all, each person is responsible for themselves & must provide for their own health/housing/retirement needs
Labour - you can have a socialist system in a capitalist society, thats how the NHS has worked we get the treatment we need regardless of whether we can pay or not, we are all responsible for each other therefore paying taxes that allow health/education/welfare benefits for all make this a good society to live in

I have no idea how scientific it is, or how they cross check the results, but it's a bit of fun.

Some of the questions were quite badly worded, and read like logic puzzles - 'if you don't think that people shouldn't stop doing things that they think are not bad for them, does that mean that you are not unreasonable?' I'm not convinced that all my answers reflected my actual beliefs?

silverlining48 Wed 01-Sept-21 09:17:58

I was left libertarian too, blob in the upper middle of the ? Not unhappy about that .

I was left libertarian which is a load of bollocks. I would say I was in the middle more right than left. Who organises these things ? They need to go back to school.

Perhaps you cheated with your answers ?

What is so horrifying about being left wing libertarian, though?

Doodledog Wed 01-Sept-21 07:49:08

I suspect that most people see themselves as in the middle, though. It’s like most things - we judge others using ourselves as the mid- point. Rich people have more money than us, alcoholics drink more, and old age begins five years after our current age?.

PippaZ Wed 01-Sept-21 07:22:50

It's only an online quiz nanna8. I shouldn't worry. With posts like that I don't think anyone will mistake you for anything other than right-wing/authoritarian.

it took ages
Your Political Compass
Economic Left/Right: -6.5
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.95

Which quadrant did you end up in? Did it surprise you?

I don't like party politics, as I've posted before

But this thread isn't about party politics, it's about what people see as the core principles of each party.

And now it's people doing a quiz to find where their political compass takes them.

It's actually interesting rather than combatitive

I'm in the middle of Caroline Lucas' face

grin

We do seem to be clustering somewhat. Someone very obviously not a leftie come and do it?

I think they're ignoring this thread...

What is interesting is that Polarbear2 thought they were a centrist. It an example of how vague labels don't always fit with what one actually believes, isn't it?

I'm rather to the left of Caroline Lucas. But then the artist possibly took the people they drew at their own estimation, or just guessed from their actions where they might stand. They can't have all completed the questionnaire, can they? ('cos some of them are dead grin )
