A winter of very expensive heating and little food?

What is happening about this? I must admit I feel worried.

If this is true and will be paid for by those who have lost in-work benefits and are paying higher NI, how on earth will they get through the winter.

I'm a Pensioner and not rich enough to expect them to do anything for me.

Well if push comes to shove ( food shortages) I can don my waders and walk out from Thorpe Bay to the Oyster and Mussel beds ?

PippaZ Tue 21-Sept-21 17:24:38

I am obviously about to lose some more time I will never get back smile but there is a "pedia" for emojies. Sarcasm is here

I have to say I don't think they know any more than we do and a new one needs designing.

However, this page gives two suggestion for the sarcasm emoji - and still gets us no further unless I am missing something. What I do like on that page is the first offering. I know what they say it means but I think its "we're taking over"!

GrannyGravy13 Tue 21-Sept-21 17:10:38

No we need to know how a Countries economy differs from a households.

Alegrias1 Tue 21-Sept-21 17:05:16

We really need a sarcasm emoji, don't we?

Well the Government was never going to please everyone regarding the CO2 issue.

They had two choices, keep their fingers crossed that the shortage disappeared, I can just imagine the outrage on GN in that scenario.

Now the Government has come to an agreement with the largest fertiliser facility in the U.K. to restart its production and it’s how much I that going to cost the taxpayers

I see that Kwarteng has struck a deal to start CO2 production again.

I wonder how much that has cost us?

But good news though.

Nonsense! There was never a problem in the first place - according to some GNers. Why is he wasting tax-payers' money on a non-problem?

Silly me.

I wonder if there are shortages in some lines, but not others. I buy hardly any tins or processed food. I rarely eat rice, pasta, bread or anything made with pastry and never eat cake or biscuits. I eat very few root vegetables or "exotic" fruits such as pineapples. The shops could be full of those items for all I know, but I won't buy them.

Incidentally, the other half of this thread is about rising fuel bills. Has nobody else had their standing orders increased?

Just been shopping today. Absolutely no shortages noticed in any departments. Lots of veg. I was tempted to buy more than usual and get the soup maker out.
Problems must be local?

No problems near me in Stockport, Greater Manchester either - or at least not in the food items that I usually buy. If the CO2 shortage affects meat distribution then it will affect me but I’ll just adapt my meals for a while. I don’t usually have much in my food cupboards or didn’t pre Covid but now I use click and collect for my weekly shop, I had built up a supply of extra cans.

However, I went through my cupboards last week and donated a couple of bag fulls to a local charity which supports the homeless so my cupboards are pretty bare. But I think the people being helped by this fantastic charity need the food more than I do.

And back to the 1970s we go!

Put another jumper on…..eat less…..we will survive….look at the tiny war time rations…..there was no starvation…..in fact it could be said we were healthier for it…..be positive!
But yes there is some truth in shortages…..but the scaremongering in the press will exacerbate it! If everyone just bought what they needed and didn’t stock pile…..goes without saying……mind you how many still have their lockdown 1 stockpiles…….?

I’ve got a friend who still has a tinned food stockpile from the fear of The Millennium Bug, she believed the hype that the whole world would almost shut down!

Well one thing I have just learned; Lemongrove does not share her home with a cat.

It’s a well known fact dogs have owners cats have staff

Josieanne ?

Josianne Tue 21-Sept-21 15:51:23

Isn't co2 produced from natural fermentation in wine? Just open all your bottles and harvest the gas to cook with. No panic.

PippaZ DH likes to BBQ, I am sure a Turkey and a few pigs in blankets will not be a problem. Plenty of room for veggies also ?

I don’t think anyone need panic at all ( although it’s a favoured pastime on GN)?

I think the favourite pastime is yours lemongrove. There was no talk of panic until you arrived. People were just discussing the situation.

Alegrais Our pigs in blankets may be saved but will we be able to cook them?

(*Lemongrove*, the above is what is generally called a question - not panic)

Josianne I have a soft spot for Selfridges, Harvey Nicks is good for Australian chocolate/sweets

I've never been to HN's.

Walthamstow market is equally brilliant and good value.

And.....panic over.

For now. Our pigs in blankets are saved.

If a Gransnetter (or anyone else for that matter, disability’s excepted) is not capable of wrapping some bacon round a chipolata sausage I would be amazed…

What is everyone’s problem with Fortnum & Mason? There are other Food Halls in central London equally as good if not better.

Harrods gets my vote!

I once won a Fortnum and Mason Christmas pud in a raffle,
It was very disappointing, not a patch on the Tesco one.
